I wrote this piece with a darker sonority and an emphasis on lyricism, qualities that I associate with the viola. In the first movement, titled Fantasia, the viola begins with a quiet and free cadenza, becoming more passionate until the woodwinds join in dialogue with the soloist. Gradually the rest of the orchestra enters, exploring ideas from the solo cadenza while introducing a new theme that reappears in the last movement. The second movement is a scherzo, mischievous in mood with the orchestra and viola trading barbed jokes. The antics are interrupted by a brass chorale with embellishment from the viola. The scherzo then resumes with prominent contributions from the bassoons. The last movement, titled Nocturne, plays with different kinds of music associated with the night. A sensual and romantic atmosphere gives way to something more menacing and ultimately violent. After a climax from the full orchestra, soft strings and solo viola lead us into the coda, taking an ambiguous idea from the first movement and transforming it into a lyrical and heartfelt prayer. The concerto ends with the solo viola ascending on the crest of an orchestral wave of sound.

Agitato: This is a movement with a clear romantic intention, as well as passionate. It is like a projection of different colors in an atmosphere of lightness. In this case I probably had Mendelssohn in the back of my mind. Everything in it is extroverted. Vigor and gentleness alternate until reaching the end, where I make a clear allusion to the music of Bach. The movement ends in a fast arpeggio.Capriccio: This part has a humorous touch to it. An evidently burlesque subject matter matches the various rhythmic and harmonic combinations. I do not wish to conceal a similarity of style with the music of Prokofiev. As a reminder, my Sonatina for violin solo comes from an idea taken from this Russian master's Sonata, also for violin solo. The mood is marcato and sharp, alternating expressive moments with others of a mysterious nature. To end up with, a fast and lively coda.Ricordo: It has a burlesque introduction, but this serves as a preamble to the expressive nature of the whole. There are several emotional atmospheres in which harmony plays an essential part. The left hand will be responsible for the melody while the right hand constantly draws semiquavers all in a reflexive mood. In the end, the music fades away gently.Animato: This movement brings us back to the extroverted mood of the Agitato. It transitions from an impressionistic atmosphere at the beginning, to a vigorous and energetic climate. Groups of 4, 5 and 6 notes with semiquavers cause certain instability, controlled, on the other hand, by an unchanging tempo. The movement ends in a forceful marcato, though in an overall maestoso atmosphere.

A colorful and romantic adaptation of Franz Gruber's famous Christmas melody, interweaving fanciful jazz harmony with a touch of passionate dissonance. This fantasia explores the wide variety of flavors afforded by the concert band and, while not too technically challenging, provides your players with an exercise in ensemble cohesion.

In the entire history of pop and rock, no band has so dominated the music scene as original brit-poppers the Beatles did in the 1960s. For this medley for string quartet, four songs were selected that show the musical range of the Fab Four: from the powerful Help! through the romantic evergreen Yesterday and the rock classic A Hard Dayâ??s Night to the passionate anthem All You Need Is Love. All You Need Is Love. A Hard Dayâ??s Night jusquâ?? lâ??hymne All You Need Is Love.

When writing his Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, Camille Saint-Saens created a 'classic' of violoncello literature. But the French musician even wrote other solo works for this instrument: a second concerto, two sonatas, the 'Swan' from 'The Carnival of the Animals' as well as a 'Suite with Piano Accompaniment' Op. 16. Premiered on 27 April 1866 and probably written shortly before, the work is based on the composer's study of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite, integrated in a Romantic tonal language. Many years later (1919) the composer also presented a version with orchestral instead of piano accompaniment, and for this version he replaced movements 3 and 5 and changed the ending of the fourth movement. The present edition contains the text of the orchestral version: The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a stylized gavotte and a sentimental romance before a passionate tarantella puts a virtuoso end to the piece. The enthusiastic, melodic 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello repertoire, suitable for both tuition and concert purposes.

The story centres on the English princess Caroline Mathilde (1751-1775), sister of George III, who at the age of 15 was sent to Denmark to marry the 17-year-old eccentric and schizophrenic Danish King, Christian VII. The ballet portrays her unhappy marriage, the King's growing madness and her fatal love-affair with Struensee, the King's influential physician, which leads to their arrest, his execution and her exile, at the age of 20, separated from her two young children. In keeping with the period, and perhaps also with the traditions of Romantic ballet, the music is relatively simple in harmony and form, and most of the action is conveyed in set-piece dances. The suite, which consists essentially of the second half of Act I, begins with one of these, a bristling interplay of wind and string ensembles in D major, portraying in the ballet a curious nuptial game with the king and princess on movable pedestals. The slow music that follows has to do with the king's healing by Dr. Struensee and the new queen's unquiet reverie (oboe and cor anglais solos). Then the suite, like the act, is capped by a pair of pas-de-deux, the first savage and bizarre for the royal couple, the second rich and passionate for the queen and the miracle-working doctor. Score (miniature). Duration c. 25mins.

Stephen Houghs Paradise, written as the test piece for the 2016 National Flute Association Piccolo Artist Competition does something a little bit different; as the composer himself says, I wanted to allow the piccolo to become the romantic lead to play the passionate hero. Written in three sections, Houghs piece is a typically thoughtful, stylish and welcome addition to the piccolo repertoire.

REVEILLE RETRAITE for solo trumpetA joint commission between Hakan Hardenberger and Danmarks RadioDedicated to Hakan HardenbergerProgramme note:Everybody knows or has at least heard of the time honoured military bugle calls: Reveille Retraite, the awakening at sunrise the turning in at sunset. In a way it's the UR concept of the nature of the trumpet, an instrument capable of glorious panache as well as sublime, inward looking finesse. My piece is, as indicated in the title, a two fold composition in the form of two contrasting tone poems, each mirroring a fragment of original text, what one could call spiritual appetizers. At the end of chapter 8 of his high spirited Memoirs Hector Berlioz laments the murder of a man he admired, Prince Lichnowsky, who was stabbed to death in Frankfurt in September 1848 by German peasants: Oh, I must get out, walk, run, shout under the open sky! Now, there's a juicy bit of high strung romantic Sturm und Drang for you and the perfect motto for any awakening... Then night fall, Retraite, in which I've drawn upon the early, melancholy poem ALONE by Edgar Allan Poe and taken out one single line as 'subtitle' for this very hushed and withdrawn movement: And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone. I guess it won't hurt to quote the poem in its entirety:From childhood's hour I have not beenAs others were I have not seenAs others saw I could not bringMy passions from a common spring. From the same source I have not takenMy sorrow; I could not awakenMy heart to joy at the same tone; And all1 lov'd, I lov'd alone.THEN in my childhood in the dawnOf a most stormy life was drawnFrom ev'ry depth of good and illThe mystery which binds me still:From the torrent, or the fountain,From the red cliff of the mountain,From the sun that 'round me roll`dIn its autumn tint of gold From the lightning in the skyAs it pass'd me flying by From the thunder and the storm,And the cloud that took the form(When the rest of Beaven was blue)Of a demon in my view.Edgar Allan PoeProgramme note by Poul Ruders, January 2004.
