Pietro Nardini was the most important pupil of Tartini regarding both violin playing and composition. Like his teacher, he attached special significance to the beauty of sound and the -suitability for singing, as is shown by reports of his contemporaries. Premiered in October 2018 by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, principal tubist David Saltzman as soloist, the Concerto features three movements with a cadenza between the second and third. Adler likens the solo passages in the first movement and cadenza to a singing cantor, an obvious homage to his own father's work in that role. These three a cappella movements each originate from different largescale compositions, some for fairly substantial forces. In these works, when the focus is turned on the essence of a statement, I have (probably out of pure instinct) permitted all adjuncts - such as subtle orchestral accompaniment, opulent percussion, soloists, electronics etc. - to fall silent and tried to express myself through pure choral singing. There is a saying originating from the Judeo-Christian tradition of thought: 'The last shirt has no pockets.' Symphony no. 6 dates from the spring of 2009. It is dedicated to the conductor Karoly Neumayer and his orchestra, the Pecs Railway Workers' Concert Wind Ensemble. About the work, the composer writes: This three-movement composition follows the classical traditions, but the first movement further develops the Scriabin-type sonata form, combining two fast movements. In contrast to the lyricism of the second movement a subterranean, negative force also makes its presence felt but in a dramatic conflict is overcome by the massive, inspired communal singing of the lyrical material, which becomes chorale-like as it emanates from the modal scales. The third movement is a cheerful, dance-like scherzo, with comical, humorous sound-effects..

Composer's Note: The Lullaby from The Unicorns arose from an opera libretto I commissioned from John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) in the late 1960s. In his story two unicorns are discovered in a remote part of Africa. Both the East and West want to obtain them for research so they send out rival expeditions. The Western technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing a lullaby. Both East and West capture unicorns but the mythical animals escape in the end. I never completed the opera but I made a six-movement suite from it called The Unicorns. There are three songs and three instrumental numbers and the first performance was given with Elisabeth Soderstrom and Solna Brass under Lars-Gunnar Bjorklund at Ekensbergskyrkan, Solna, Sweden on 31 October 1982. This version was recorded and my arrangement of the three songs for voice and piano was recorded by Marilyn Hill Smith. The career of the Lullaby continued with a version for clarinet and piano, which I premiered with Jack Brymer aboard the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on 29 September 1986. The oboe version was for Sarah Francis, and Duke Dobing and I have recorded it for flute an piano. Lullaby can be played with a variety of solo instruments and is also available for piano left hand and piano solo.

Prayer is one of the composer's most original and sophisticated works. The typical African-American church service seems to be a source for this piece with its interplay of sections and colors, yet the work in form and rhythmic choices is clearly 'classical' and never breaks out into easy imitations of, for example, gospel music.The work opens with the choir singing the spiritual 'My Lord, What a Mornin'' in octaves, sung flat-out a cappella, as might happen in church. The instrumental section following this opening feels very much like a thoughtful response by the congregation. Instruments seem to behave like individual churchgoers, colorfully dressed and answering various episodes with individual thoughts. As for any fears that the mighty organ might drown out the proceedings, Singleton puts that to rest by employing it almost like another choir or section of the choir. The trumpet soloist does not blast us into heaven, it tends to sing and, we find out later, is preparing us for the spiritual 'Where Shall I Be When the Firs' Trumpet Soun'?' Even the tenor soloist behaves much like just another (but still important) instrument.The composer has chosen to not only feature spirituals, but also to set a poetic text called A Christian Prayer, whose main message, almost like some modern-day Kyrie, calls out 'save us teach us ' and extols the importance of humility and the defeat of violence. Singleton has always been a composer who has simultaneously answered the call to carry out what he feels is his duty to his fellow humans while using the finest of his art to do so, and Prayer finds him at the top of his game.- Carman Moore.

Keystone tells the story of the Odeon of Vriezenveen, a town in the Netherlands. “Odeon†is the name of ancient Greek and Roman buildings used for activities such as singing, music and poetry. This was the name chosen in 1998 by several members of the 'Vriezenveense Harmonie' for the cultural ceter they decided to have built. The piece starts slowly with the bass instruments, then speeds up in a counterpoint passage where the main motif moves from one set of instruments to another. After a slow section, the music speeds up again to reach a majestic chorale symbolising the splendid Odeon.
