Little Paul visits a museum of musical instruments with his schoolmates. In the museum, one can see instruments from all over the world - very old ones, but also modern ones. Apart from well-known instruments, there are of course many other fascinating things to discover: sonorous stones from Northern Togo, a bone flute, the snake-shaped serpent, a walking-stick violin, an armadillo guitar, a giraffe piano and many more. This picture book continues the successful series of books by Andrea Hoyer. As in her previous books 'In der Musikschule', 'In der Oper' and 'Im Konzert', the story is told by Little Paul. In an entertaining way, the children learn a lot about known and historical instruments and get fascinating information on exotic instruments from faraway countries. As in Andrea Hoyer's other books, the main focus again is on the charming detail drawings which stimulate the reader's imagination and will be enjoyable not only to children. Coordinate Movement for Pianists explores the art and science of playing piano from a fundamental yet often overlooked perspective: sound is the result of movement. What movements, then, produce the most desirable sounds at the piano? Drawing from experience in the fields of piano instruction, medicine, and Body Mapping, author Lisa Marsh presents a detailed discussion—complete with anatomical drawings and music examples—about the types of movement that contribute to a healthy, fluid, and versatile piano technique. This resource is divided into three parts. In the first, Marsh establishes several foundational concepts, including the relationship between sound and movement, sensory awareness, and the practice of inclusive awareness. This section also introduces the key anatomical structures involved in playing piano. Part II focuses on the development of a piano technique based on relaxed, efficient, and anatomically accurate movements. Technical skills addressed include: tremolos, trills, leaps, scales, navigating black and white keys, octaves, chords, voicing, articulation, pedaling, fingerings, repeated notes, and tone production, among others. The dozens of music examples included in Part II, excerpted from the standard piano literature, offer an opportunity for pianists to practice healthy movements in context. This section also includes several chapters that offer practical tips for practicing, learning, and memorizing music. Part III rounds out this resource with a thoughtful discussion about musicians’ physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Topics covered include finding community and employment, combating performance anxiety, preventing injury, and rehabilitating after injury. Coordinate Movement for Pianists is a brilliant reminder that healthy movement is the basis for a fulfilling and lifelong enjoyment of piano. Regardless of experience or level, students and teachers alike are certain to gain new inspiration and reap the benefits from applying these ideas to their own craft. Lisa Marsh is Director of the Coordinate Movement Program at Portland State University, where she specializes in wellness for musicians. Her work as an educator, performer, and composer is informed by years of experience in the fields of medicine, piano study, Body Mapping, and Alexander Technique.

The most standard instrumentation for voicing is violin, viola, and cello. However, three of the same instruments work well as do other groupings, given that the higher-pitched instrument plays the higher part. The selections have been arranged in chronological order. Mendelssohn is considered a self-critical composer, who repeatedly reworked a number of his pieces until he deemed them worthy to be published. The path to his first Piano Trio was particularly rocky: only after several attempts was he able to complete it in the summer of 1839; it appeared in 1840 after further revisions. This perfectionism paid off, for Mendelssohn's D Minor Trio was immediately received with enthusiasm. Robert Schumann wrote: “It is the master trio of the present day, like those of Beethoven in Bb and D and that of Franz Schubert in Eb were in their time; a very beautiful composition which after years will still delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.†Which was to prove true: even today, it numbers among the most popular works in the trio repertoire in general. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn • Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

Written in 1885, the eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm have a special place in Richard Strauss' corpus of Lieder. For the first time, he composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, collecting them into one opus that was also to appear in print. Some of the numbers in it, like Zueignung, Die Nacht, and Allerseelen, are among the most popular Strauss songs of all time, but the entire cycle with its well-planned structure is also worthy of closer examination and performance. The aspiring composer quite consciously aligns himself with the tradition ranging from Schubert to Wolf, choosing the highly Romantic subject of unrequited love and illuminating its most diverse facets. The primary source for the Henle Urtext edition is the first edition from 1887, which Strauss furnished with a dedication to the Royal Bavarian chamber singer Heinrich Vogl - a serious invitation to today's male singers not to leave these wonderful Strauss songs solely to female singers!

Henle has returned to these tried and tested transpositions for its own Urtext edition for low voice, so as to offer this wondrous song-cycle to all voice ranges.

The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic ouvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Probably composed in the winter of 1791/92, the Symphony in D major no. 93 was, with its easily accessible (butby no means simple!) musical structure, perfectly tailored to London tastes, which demanded melodic clarity and expressive pathos. The Baroque echoes of Handel in the slow introduction to the first movement and in the festive mood of the finale with its timpani and trumpets would have been well received - no wonder the symphony had to be repeated multiple times in the same season after its performance in 1792! This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Hailing from 1791, the Symphony in D major no. 96 numbers among the first symphonies written in and for London. The epithet given to it by posterity, “The Miracleâ€, was bestowed erroneously, for the miracle - that no one was injured when a chandelier fell during a concert - took place during a performance of a different Haydn symphony. And yet it is a miracle of musical esprit nonetheless; from the subtle relations between the motives consisting of broken triads that open all four movements, to the virtuosic shifts in mood owing to surprising harmonies, Haydn here submits a prime example of how he develops musical ideas. The E-flat-major Symphony no. 103 was composed in 1795 as the penultimate of the London Symphonies. It owes its epithet to its unique beginning; a solo drumroll in the timpani ushers in the slow introduction. This opening bar, marked with Haydn's heading “Intrada†and a pause, even inspires many a performer to venture a short timpani improvisation. The energetic, surging B-flat-major Symphony no. 102 belongs to the group of the last three symphonies premiered in early 1795. Exceptionally, Haydn here dispenses with the clarinets that are otherwise generally featured in his late symphonies. The instrumentation of the Adagio is also unusual, in that Haydn includes trumpets and timpani, both muted. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. To this day, the G-major symphony, first performed in March 1792, numbers among Haydn's most popular works. It owes its English nickname “Surprise†to the striking tutti chords in the Andante, which apparently caught the audience off guard. Haydn had consciously incorporated this effect at a later stage - and was thus subsequently also perfectly willing to authorize this nickname that had been dreamt up by a London musician. This popular work also spread rapidly through German-speaking countries, where it is still firmly established in the repertoire as the “symphony with the drumbeat.†This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality.
