Michel Guimont has given us an attractive setting of the Magnificat set in refrain and verse format. The piece is a welcome setting for those who pray evening prayer in the parish and is a fine addition to Marian repertoire for congregations and choirs. There are two separate accompaniments in this edition. One for organ and one for piano.

Though intended for Communion, each setting has its own theme, making them suitable at other times—whether in praise of the risen Christ, as a song to answer Christ’s invitation to the banquet, or when we gather in his name and then go forth to share his life with the world. While scored for SATB voices, the settings are versatile enough for use by cantor and assembly or by smaller, unison choirs. The accompaniments work well on organ, piano, or guitar. Contents: Alleluia, Alleluia, Praise the Risen Son!, Happy Are All Who Are Called to the Feast and Where Two or More Have Come.

Each song in this edition is set for SATB voices, yet versatile enough to work well with just cantor and assembly. Smaller choirs can make use of these gems, singing only the melodies. The accompaniments are playable on organ or piano. This trio of songs follows the success of a previous Dufner/Guimont collaboration, Amen to the Body of Christ: Eight Songs for the Communion Procession, G-7205. The Guitar part is optional. Contents: O Christ, You Are the Seed That Died, We Are Blest Who Are Called and We Receive What We Are.

Dona nobis pacem and Lux aeterna were both written for concert programs devoted to specific themes. They share the use of the techniques of minimalism in their organ parts, enabling the broad vocal lines in the choral voices to stretch out above this instrument, thus imparting a special aspect to the concerns addressed by the texts: the longing for freedom in the here and now, as expressed in the Dona nobis pacem, as well as the desire for peace and tranquillity in the Lux aeterna. Score available separately - see item CA.751600.
