O Great Beyond was commissioned by JAM (the John Armitage Memorial) and first performed by the BBC Singers and Nicholas Cleobury on July 8th, 2016, as part of the JAM on the Marsh festival. The text is taken from The Gardener, a collection of verse by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). Published one year after Tagore’s Nobel Prize-winning collection of spiritual poems, Gitanjali (1912), The Gardener contains poems that were written much earlier in his career. Tagore retrospectively described this collection as the “lyrics of love and life.†The musical narrative of O Great Beyond is meant to mirror the stages of love portrayed in The Gardener, culminating in the desire for a “Beautiful End†in the final movement. —Thomas LaVoy  .

For SATB and organ, orchestra, or brass This is a majestic setting of the popular hymn 'O God beyond all praising' to Holst's tune 'Thaxted', which is adapted from a theme in 'Jupiter' from The Planets. Wilberg's beautiful treatment of the first three-note figure of the famous tune builds gradually into a rich, soaring four-part texture.

The fourth collection of hymns by Alan Gaunt, Beyond All Words, brings together 89 texts on a variety of themes that are both contemporary and yet grounded in the perennial questions of theology. In his Foreword, Emeritus Professor David M. Thompson writes 'One could see this collection as a diary of the first decade of the third millennium, during which so many of the bright hopes with which the new era began were ruthlessly smashed with the most up-to-date military technology available. So again and again the human existential question Why? is translated into the ultimate question in Christian theology of the Why? of the cross.'.

The piece was commissioned by Kevin Scully, Director of Creative Arts, for the Port Washington School District, New York, with special thanks to the Ed Foundation and HEARTS for their unwavering support. Performance Notes This lighthearted piece is a great way to bring multiple choirs together in harmony. It may be sung by a single SATB choir, though it is intended to be performed by multiple choirs of varying age levels. Song of the Sound was written for an all-district feeder festival piece for combined elementary, middle level, and high school choirs. Here is a suggested outline for combining multiple choirs: Rehearsal Letters A to B: Elementary choir only (two-part, Soprano, Alto) Rehearsal Letter B: add Middle Level Soprano, Alto with Elementary choir Rehearsal Letter C: Middle Level choir only Rehearsal Letter D: High School choir only Rehearsal Letter E to the end: Everyone! Song of the Sound: Running on the beach, digging in the sand, Seaweed in my toes, bucket in my hand. When I'm at the shore, way above the rest, These are all the things that I love the best. Skipping like a stone on the water, diving deep in the silvery foam, Swimming far where the land cannot hold us, where the lighthouse calls us home. Flying free above the marshes, soaring high above the sea, Where the tern and cormorant and plover call to lands we cannot see.Come let us go to the water, let us go to the singing shore: Where the gentle breezes whisper and the mighty breakers roar. We will look to the shining ocean, to the East, where the new day dawned: We will sing a song of the edge of the world and the waiting sky beyond. -Poem by Robert Bode (Hope Springs Retreat Center, Ohio. At the request of violin pedagogue Pavel Vernikov, Igudesman and Joo have composed performance pieces for the Feast of Duos competition held in August 2014. The two commposer/performers insisted that, along with standard repertoire, all entrants also perform a work that included specific elements: theatricality, spoken word, choreography, improvisation, and humor (i.e.: any Igudesman & Joo concert). This set includes two full performance pieces, including dancing while playing, singing while playing, playing the piano with...well...playing the piano posteriorially, and more, As Far As You Can (by Igudesman) and Beyond the Limit? (by Joo). See an excellent YouTube compilation video of various duos performing Beyond the LImit? at competition.

The Good Friday Responsory Tenebrae factae sunt for six-part chorus was commissioned in 2012 for Peking University Student Choir and was premiered at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA conducted by Hou Xijin. It is an ambitious work with a fervent intensity. Matsushita sets the two last words of Jesus, Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? [My God, why hast thou forsaken me] and Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum [Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit] as pained outcries in Stravinskyian harshness, in chords characterized by tritones, as a truly superhuman work of redemption whose Easter message of hope only appears in the last conciliatory F major chord. Although this work lies slightly beyond the upper limit of the musical and vocal technical demands of the Carus Contemporary series, it is well within the abilities of ambitious chamber choirs.

“The Listening,” written by Grammy-nominated composer Cheryl B. Engelhardt in December 2017 for VOICES 21C under the artistic direction of André de Quadros, draws its inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impactful 1967 speech, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.” This dynamic, emotion-filled piece expresses King's call to end societal silence. The rhythmic elements in the piece are derived from the poetic nature of King's speech. The inclusion of a children's choir, inspired by the Parkland school shooting and subsequent protests, symbolizes the disruption of childhood peace by violence. Notably, the virtual collaboration, featuring Donzaleigh Abernathy, Dr. King's goddaughter, emphasizes the song's contemporary relevance in addressing social issues, and was featured in PEOPLE. Premiered live at the Massachusetts Music Educators Conference in 2018 by VOICES 21C, and digitally released during Black History month in 2021, “The Listening” stands as a profound anthem for breaking silence and to foster positive change.

This book of versatile, pedagogically based choral warm-ups helps conductors take full advantage of this important time in every rehearsal, providing tools for assessment, musicianship, and ensemble unity at the same time singers are warming up their voices. The exercises in Aligning Voices are organized into nine chapters, each focusing on a different area of choral technique: Rhythm Brilliance Intonation Balance Dynamics Consonants Beginning Consonants Diphthongs and Ending Consonants Vowels Each warm-up contains two or more parts, allowing the director to work toward improving choral sound in a texture similar to that of the repertoire. Moreover, author Dean Luethi provides every warm-up in three voicings—SATB, SSAA, and TTBB—and sequentially organizes them by difficulty level. In addition, each section begins by defining the objective for each exercise and offering practical solutions for many of the common challenges choirs face in each area. A companion student edition that contains only the music notation for each warm-up exercise is also available (G-9692S). These exercises go well beyond simply warming up the voice. This resource is a must-have for all choral directors looking to make the most of their warm-up time. Dean Luethi is Associate Professor and Director of the School of Music at Washington State University. In addition to his work at the university, he is a frequently sought after conductor, adjudicator, and clinician, and he has been published in the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal. Watch this introductory video on Dean Luethi's (Lee-thee) book Aligning Voices: Exercises to Build Choral Musicianship.

This hymn concertato on Holst's noble tune THAXTED provides two texts: one by Delores Dufner, OSB, for Pentecost/Confirmation, and Michael Perry's more familiar general text. The opening fanfare and interlude for brass, timpani, and handbells facilitate festive processions, but the piece may be adapted for use with only organ accompaniment. An elegant SATB harmonization of the middle stanza may be sung by choir alone.
