Originally written by the great English writer J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), The Lord of the Rings has encountered new-found popularity recently with the release of three ?huge-hit? motion pictures. With Bilbo the Hobbit we enter the lands of Middle-earth during the Third Age, some decades before The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fascinated by the works of the masters of film music, Maxime Aulio structured this work in their way. When the end credits roll, Maxime?s music displays all the basic characters and passages of the novel. From the landscapes of the Shire to Middle-earth, the Great Dragons to Gandalf the Wizard, Bilbo Baggins tells us his story through light and virtuosoarabesques in the solo part. Bilbo the Hobbit is a wonderful addition to the french horn repertoire and one to be a sure-fire hit with horn players everywhere. Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by “De Arumer Swarte Heap,“ the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!

The composer wrote of his work as follows: In the music of Hungary, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 17th century, written by unknown amateurs in a relatively simple style. Most of these dances were recorded between the 14th and 18th centuries under the usual form of tablature notation. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated that I decided to give these melodies new life. I fitted the little eight-bar dances together into ternary and rondo forms, and leaning on early Baroque harmony and counterpoint, I attempted a reminiscence of that atmosphere of the provincial Hungarian Baroque.

A CD that includes four great works by Franco Cesarini performed by the Civica Filarmonica di Lugano under the direction of the Maestro. Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor BWV 582 In Franco CesariniÂ’s arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeittinged with late-Romanticism. A masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach superbly arranged for wind orchestra. Sinfonietta No. 3 “Zwölfmalgreien Sketchesâ€, Op. 56 In composing the Sinfonietta No. 3 , Franco Cesarini was inspired by the history of the municipality of Zwölfmalgreien, made up of various towns, villages and scattered districts which were incorporated to the City of Bolzano (Italy) over one hundred years ago. The peculiarity of these places, different from each other, but all characterized by rare beauty, have contributed to create this 3-mouvement work (City Life, Mountain Shadows and Classic Wineyards), which translates into music the activities of the villages, the winter days and the lively atmosphere in the wine regions. A perfect trip to this wonderful part of Italy! Suite Siciliana, Op. 57b The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada , Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola , Tambourin , Sicilianaand Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colorful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the “pupiâ€, which narrate a secular tradition. A full immersion into ancient traditions of this beautiful island! Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, Op. 55 Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how was born Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapes†, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements - The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon , Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gate - which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, a sumptuous musical portrait of the “Windy Cityâ€. Civica Filarmonica di Lugano Since its foundation in 1830, Civica Filarmonica di Lugano has performed at diverging events, varying from large gatherings to international jury performances. The Civica Filarmonica di Lugano is one of SwitzerlandÂ’s oldest and most prestigious music societies and consists of approximately 70 musicians. The Civica Filarmonica gives about 20 concerts a year, both at the city's concert halls and the Piazza della Riforma, the square in Lugano that.

Illyria is a region in southern Europe, and the name has been used in books and music throughout history, including Shakespearean plays. Composer Sean O'Loughlin takes beginning students on a musical journey, starting with broad melodic statements by the brass, bold full ensemble statements, a contrasting lyrical section, and concluding with a relentless finish. Journey to Illyria is a sophisticated musical presentation that is still playable by the youngest of students. The title Journey to Illyria comes out of a recent internet search that came up with a similarly titled book by an author named Sean O'Loughlin (no relation). I'm always fascinated by how connected and small this world can seem. After some further research, I found that Illyria is also a name that appears in some fantasy fiction books and even on the TV show Angel. All of this gets wrapped into the music for this piece. It begins with a broad melodic statement by the brass. It develops further at m. 9 and then transitions to a full statement at m. 25 with plenty of imitation between upper and lower voices. A contrasting slower section follows at m. 39, which should bring out the haunting, rich sound of the ensemble. The fast section returns at m. 46 with progressively building imitation to bring back the opening gesture at m. 58. The music then is relentless to the rousing end.

This entrancing work musically captures the dazzling dancing northern lights which have fascinated mankind for centuries. The opening theme is presented in varying styles, characterizing the many forms in which the lights appear, from patchy clouds to streaming arches. Trills and rolls symbolize the rippling formations, and the chromatic rising musical lines reflect the soaring rays which light the sky with an eerie glow. Bright brass fanfares depict the magnificent shades of green and pink. Exciting music for both audiences and performers, Aurora Borealis is a surefire winner!

Legend has it that Edith Piaf, one of the greatest stars of the French music scene, was born under a lamp post in Paris and spent much of her childhood roaming the streets, singing in front of a fascinated audience. Composer Philip Sparke has long been fascinated by history’s pioneers. In all fields of human activity, there has been someone with enormous vision who has made the first step into the unknown. Explorers have found new lands, doctors have discovered new medicines and scientists are pushing the bounds of technology ever further. But there was always one ‘pathfinder’, someone who was not afraid of the unknown, who dared to go one step further than anyone before him. The march is dedicated those pioneers who have risked everything for the sake of their vision.

Solar Flare, by Tyler Arcari, depicts the huge explosion on the Sun that appears as a sudden bright flash. The piece incorporates a whirlwind of mixed meters to?depict this phenomenon. Arcari showcases his fresh, exciting, and well-scored compositional style in this piece. Solar Flare makes for? an excellent concert opener.A solar flare is a huge explosion on the sun that appears as a sudden increase in brightness or flash. Sometimes these explosions push large amounts of energy and even parts of the sun flying out into space. These events can be so powerful that they cause events on Earth such as auroras, as well as more serious issues like disrupting radio and electronic instruments. To our naked eye, these dangerous explosions are beautiful and quiet. The celestial is a fascinating place, hopefully captured in some small part by this work. About the Work: Solar Flare began as a piece with two goals: to write a space piece in 7/8 and to write a teaching 7/8 space piece. The piece uses a 2-2-3 pattern, so using this in pre-performance warm-ups might be beneficial. The piece is loosely based on a minor second descending to a minor third. This motif is used at the onset of the piece in the mallet percussion and then again in the woodwinds. The melody presents itself at m. 19 in the clarinets. This melodic material is varied and traded throughout the instrument groups until m.67. Measures 6972 should be treated as a transitional fanfare to the new material at m. 73. Measures 99115 to the end of the piece feature a style similar to the beginning that helps to transition to m. 115, which is the climax of the work. An ostinato pattern (2-2-3) is presented with fragments of the melody appearing in the alto voices. This momentum culminates in a large, abrasive area at m. 125 where the suspension-resolution in the brass and horn melodic fragment need to be the focus. This momentum continuously grows until the last note where we resolve finally. Care should be taken that the ^ accent on the final note is one meant to be played heavy, and not short.A solar flare is a huge explosion on the sun that appears as a sudden increase in brightness or flash. Measures 69-72 should be treated as a transitional fanfare to the new material at m. 73. Measures 99-115 to the end of the piece feature a style similar to the beginning that helps to transition to m. Golden Peak is a concert piece that takes us deep into the world of volcanoes of the Auvergne in central France. They are dormant volcanoes whose origins date back from 7,000 to over 65 million years ago. Among the most well-known are the 80 volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys, a spectacular natural environment ranking among the most fascinating landscapes in the world. The title of this dynamic and rhythmic piece is a reference to the local spa town of Mont-Dore and calls upon all sections of the orchestra. The central theme is very mellow yet riveting and the music depicts both the dynamism and tranquillity of the region.

Aurora Eclipsed was inspired by the solar eclipse of 2017.  During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. An aggressive composition younger students will enjoy playing over and over again.I wrote Aurora Eclipsed while looking outside at 2017’s solar eclipse. I find space and celestial bodies so fascinating. To think of how small we are compared to the scale of even just the moon is impressive.During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. About the work:Unlike most of my young-band pieces, Aurora Eclipsed begins at its peak tempo. The rhythmic pattern in m. 2 is repeated throughout the piece and is used in the melody in order to help facilitate the teaching of eighth-note patterns. The melodic pattern changes slightly at m. 25, while remaining just as repetitious as the previous pattern, giving everyone ample opportunity for exposure. At m. 25 the directions call for euphonium and bassoon only. This is merely a color choice and can easily be used with trombones to fill the need or to help strengthen your students' playing. The use of sfz is not used very much in this level of music, but I thought with the addition of the accents that it would be a great opportunity to teach this colorful effect.

Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the BronzeAge. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energeticoverture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel.
