From radio to motion pictures to television, all have glamorized what we know as The Wild West, but the folk songs from that era have lived on in an unaltered state. They tell stories of the lives, loves, and losses of the brave souls who ventured into a then uncharted landscape. Here is a musical salute to that time and its people, featuring SWEET BETSY FROM PIKE, THE STREETS OF LAREDO, THE LONE PRAIRIE, and LITTLE BROWN JUG. Head 'em up and move 'em out! (2:04).

Rio Bravo draws on artifacts of iconic western film music to portray the rugged landscape surrounding one of the longest, most fabled rivers in North America. The challenging, arid region along the brave river that divides Mexico from the southwestern United States---depicted in many a song and story---is characterized by mountains, canyons, and desert plains. The river, known north of the border as the Rio Grande, has called to itself settlers, cattle drivers, gunslingers, and outlaws. Rio Bravo transports listeners to a time and place where legends of the Old West were made! (3:00).

In July, 2013, the wreckage of a commercial schooner named Atlas was discovered in Lake Ontario in nearly 300 feet of water just outside the Port of Oswego, NY. The Atlas was carrying a load of limestone meant for the U.S. government harbor in Oswego on the day of its fateful journey in May, 1839. Only two miles from port, a gale-force wind rocked the ship and its heavy load shifted, causing the vessel to sink and all of its crew members to perish. This piece was written to portray the majesty of Lake Ontario as well as the brave sailors, young and old, who navigated her volatile waters. (4:50) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
