These Piano Anthologies contain pieces which have been carefully selected from previous piano exam lists dating from 1988 to 2006. Volume 9 in the series of Supplements is mainly devoted to hitherto unpublished or inaccessible works. Apart from the piano score of the Berlioz symphony it contains smaller-scale late masterpieces (Excelsior!, Resignazione), the Album leaves written in Woronince in 1847, the large-scale but unfinished and not fully worked out Figaro and Don Juan fantasia, incorporating several Mozart themes, the piano piece No.1 in A flat major, two unpublished works incorrectly identified up till now by the special literature, the Maometto fantasia and the Siege de Corinthe (both transcriptions of Rossini works), and the volume also includes three other unpublished works (the Piano piece in F major, the Cavatina from Robert le Diable by Meyerbeer, and Freudvoll und leidvoll, written down for Pauline von Iwanowska. The Prefaces preceding the scores, which give very accurate, detailed information about the genesis of the works, make interesting reading in themselves, but their true significance consists in the new scholarly discoveries made by the editors. Similarly to the other NLE volumes, both the cloth-bound (Z. 14504a) version and the one bound in hard-paper (Z. 14504) contain in three languages the series preface, the preface to this volume, and the captions below the facsimiles, but the critical notes in English are to be found only in the linen-bound edition.Territorial restrictions may apply. En 1720, Haendel fait publier à Londres un recueil de pièces intitulé Suites de pièces pour le clavecin, 1er volume, recueil de huit Suites dont la composition remonte en majeure partie aux années de jeunesse.
On retrouve dans la Septième Suite en sol mineur HWV 432 tous les genres en vogue à cette époque, synthèse en miniature des « goûts réunis », provenant de France, d’Allemagne ou d’Italie. La Passacaille en sol mineur, parmi les pièces pour clavier les plus célèbres de Haendel, clôt la Suite en une série de courtes variations : mélodiques, rythmiques, en jeu inversé, la dernière variation résumant la série de variations, par le jeu arpégé aux deux mains de rapides doubles croches.

The name 'English Suites' did not originate with Bach, and up to now its origin could not be clarified. In his Bach biography Forkel mentions that the composer wrote the suites to fulfil an English commission. It is a much more likely assumption, however, that Bach derived inspiration for his suites from studying certain English models. A stylistic relationship, and indeed, certain thematic identities can be pointed out between the English Suites and the suites of the French composer, Dieupart, who lived in London. The piano suites of Handel, published in 1720, shortly before the origin of the English Suites, could also have served as antecedents.The English Suites have notremained extant in Bach's own hand, but they are included in a number of contemporaneous manuscript collections. Relying on the most significant sources, our publication gives all the essential differences among the copies in footnotes, thus enabling the performer to choose for himself among the variants.
