In nineteenth-century Germany, the choral society movement developed into a full-scale mass phenomenon, becoming a defining feature of bourgeois musical life. Accompanying this movement was a growing need for suitable choral music, and one of the composeres constantly in demand and successfully active in this expanding market was Josef Gabriel Rheinberger. It is therefore no coincidence that secular choral music formed one of the mainstays of his output.

The sonatas are not grouped according to their degree of difficulty, they are given in the order which corresponds with the Kirkpatrick numbering. This is approximately identical with the order in which they were composed. In this way it became possible for the pairs of sonatas included in the selection to be placed closely after one another. Apart from inevitable minor alterations this edition follows the original text and its markings exactly. This does not apply to the fingering which is entirely an editorial addition. Dies bezieht sich jedoch nicht auf den Fingersatz, der durchweg ein Vorschlag des Herausgebers ist.

This quartet forms part of a major opus whose different works make use of the same tone row matrix characterised by the harmonic interval of a third. Contrasting with the aggressive, expansive piano sonata which also belongs to the opus, its nostalgic tone is a mark of respect for the traditional ethos of string music. Erkki Salmenhaara compared the work to a prism: As the composer turns it, one and the same shaft of light gives birth over and again to new patterns and combinations of colours.

Following nearly 4 years without having composed a new symphony, although still writing opera overtures and works from orchestral serenades, Mozart composed the _x001A_Paris_x001A_ Symphony. Mozart received the commission from Joseph Legros,when him and his mother were in Paris in 1778.Mozart composed the work for the largest orchestra he_x001A_d written for until then in a symphony, marking the first time which he had used Clarinets in one of his symphonies.
