Jean Sibelius composed far less music for the cello than for the violin. Malinconia (op. 20) - published in 1911 but composed in 1900 under the title Fantasia - remained his only opus-numbered work exclusively for cello and piano. The Fantasia for cello and piano, an early stage of Malinconia , was premiered at a soiree in the Solemnity Hall of the University of Helsinki on 12 March 1900 and was given positive press reviews: The work, which mainly drew attention with its logical and clear structure, begins with a powerful and substantial cello solo, to which the piano responds with a glimmering series of arpeggiated chords. At the end where the instruments unite in a harmonious, deeply emotional song, the harmonic impression they create is very bright and lovely. The autograph manuscript of Fantasia shows that Sibelius omitted a larger passage of music between the present bars 24 and 25 and that he made further revisions to the work, either before the publishing process or in the proofs he read in April 1911 for Breitkopf.

Traveling across many countries in the first century was a perilous task, full of danger, thievery, and possible death, not to mention these men were traveling with some of the most precious and expensive cargo one could possess. This piece chronicles the magi acquiring myrrh, frankincense, and gold for their journey. Each treasure is represented by its own motif and woven into Hopkins' original carol. (2:45).

In the style of commedia dell'arteIn 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte.The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music.This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques op. 112 is based on Gabriel Faure The Complete Works, Volume IV/2.

Virtuoso transcription for accordion of Lindberg's cycle of six 'Jubilees' for piano solo. Jubilee I was composed as a birthday present for Pierre Boulez in 2000, and the cycle was completed the same year. The composer remarks that it was a challenging assignment as it was the first of his works to be made up of short movements forming a harmonious entity. The suite bears a distant relationship to Debussy's and Chopin's studies in that they too operate on clearly defined textures.

The basis for this edition is taken from the original sources, i.e. autographs, copies and prints corrected by the composer or, if possible, other reliable sources. All the changes and supplementations - if they are necessary - are graphically distinguished from the text. In the Source Commentaries musicologists will find fundamental information about the sources together with an evaluation of the degree of their authenticity, a description of mutual connections (called filiation) and a discussion of the more important divergences as well as the principles of editing the music text of particular works. In the music text, beside Chopin's fingering, we give, in different type, the fingering used in contemporary concert practice and the Performance Commentaries explain all these elements of music notation which may raise doubts today. They include: writing out the ornaments in full, pedalling indications, suggestions as to the realisation of harmonic legato and alternate fingering.

This volume contains short two-part extracts from choral church music of the 15th century (masses and motets), arranged in ascending order of difficulty. The principal aim of this compilation was pedagogical: to provide students with fairly easy etudes of the period, through which they can later gain access to the large-scale, four-part compositions of Renaissance vocal polyphony, which at first sight generally seem very difficult and complex. At the same time, many of these pieces of varying length, each of which forms a complete unit in itself, are very suitable for public performance, and for use in a liturgical framework.In diesem Band finden sich nach Schwierigkeitsgrad geordnet kurze zweistimmige Ausschnitte aus geistliche Chorwerken (Messen und Motetten) des 15. Jahrhunderts.
