This song is a popular 'Cueca brava,' also known as 'Cueca Chilenera.' The 'Cueca' was designated a na tional dance in Chile since 1979 and it has been danced throughout this country since the early 19th century, both in the countryside and in the cities. The styles of the 'Cuecas' are different according to the nature of the texts and to traditions of each region. The origin of the 'Cueca' is unclear, but certainly it developed in the Viceroyalty of Peru, fi rst as a dance called the 'zamacueca,' which in turn originated from the 'jota' and the 'fandango.' It is danced in couples who dance apart from each other while waving red scarves and moving in circles. The musicologist Carlos Vega writes: it is possible to consider the 'Cueca' as a parody of courtship between a cock and a hen: the scarves could symbolize feathers or ridges within a choreography that is characterized by loose interdependent partners. In describing the 'Cueva' another musicologist, Samuel Claro, explains that the choreography recalls the ancient or medieval tournaments and derives from the pantomime of love ... It is a festive and cheerful dance, accompanied by guitars, harp, accordion and percussion instruments, although it is written mostly in minor keys. The rhythm combines measures of 6/8 and 3/4.

Also available for euphonium and piano (HL44010860) Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Ms. Marzella was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund (as a result of winning BBC Radio 2's “Young Brass Soloist of the Year†in 2004), which allowed her to commission a series of new works for euphonium. Scaramouche continues Sparke's series of works that highlights the Italian theatre tradition of commedia dell'arte. Like its predecessors Pantomime and Harlequin, Scaramouche draws on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterized by the symbolic “happy/sad†masks of European theatre. A slow, expressive ballad followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the instrument, and the soloist to display its full capabilities.

Three compositions which belong together were written by Tihanyi in 1991-1992: Winterszenen, Nachtszene (night Scene) and Irrlichtspiel (Will o? the wisp). The Irrlichtspiel composition for violin solo and 19 instruments ensemble, came out of the notes for the song entitled Irrlicht in the fifth scene of Winterszenen (...this composition exactly follows the musical process of Winterreise by Schubert...). Here, the starting point was the refrain-like, pregnant rhythm motive, attached to the piano introduction of the Schubert song. At the end of the first part called Prelude, a miniature exposition prepares for the five developments. Their titles are: Adagio, Capriccio, Monolog, Pantomime and Postludio. World premi?re: Budapest, 30 April, 1996. Ildiko Line ? violin, Budapest Sinfonietta, conducted by Gergely Vajda.

Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most popular opera “Orphe et Euridice†was performed in 1774 in Paris to sensational success. This new adaption followed the original Viennese version with Italian text that was first performed in 1762 under the direction of the composer in the Burgtheater. For the Paris version Gluck changed the leading part Orpheus from an alto to a tenor role and composed new recitatives. Both versions of Gluck’s reform drama are based on a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi and revolutionised metastasian opera of the 18th century. Solo and choral music, instrumental music, pantomime and dance are all closely connected; the myth replaces a historical plot surrounded by intrigue; where there would have been a da-capo aria there are now simple song forms and coloratura is largely abandoned. These meticulously revised vocal scores of both versions are also newly set.
