The product available here for purchase is the solo flute part and piano reduction for John La Montaine's Concerto for Flute. Premiered on April 12, 1981 by Keith Bryan and the National Gallery Orchestra, John La Montaine's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra is best summed up in this review from Paul Hume at The Washington Post: The world premiere of a flute concerto by John La Montaine was the centerpiece. La Montaine clearly had a great time writing the concerto, since he filled it with wit and open, songful beauty. The formal design is neatly broken up into imaginative divisions. There are some exotic touches for woodblocks, and bass clarinet, but the heart of the work lies in the brilliance of the writing for the soloist. The cadenza in the final movement is impressively introduced and beautifully concluded..

François Devienne (1759 - 1803) was a French flutist and composer, as well as a founding professor at the Paris Conservatory, which was established in 1795. During his lifetime, Devienne composed over 300 works, most of which were scored for Wind Instruments.
Devienne belonged to a line of French flutists and composers who, over a period of a century, had adopted a German transverse Flute and made it a quintessentially French musical instrument. He followed the path of predecessors such as Michel de la Barre and Michel Blavet in establishing a French school of Flute playing and composition.
Devienne wrotehundreds of works for the Flute, as well as a renowned tuition manual. His 7th Concerto is thought by many to be the best of the dozen or more concertos that he composed during his lifetime. This concerto was composed in or around 1787, shortly before the French revolution. As in Mozart's later works, the passions of the time can be clearly heard - particularly in the vigorous opening theme in E minor. In contrast to the stately Allegro, the theme is gentle and lyrical, yet intriguing, with the Flute almost mimicking bird call.

This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. The source is in places full of errors, and these have been tacitly corrected. Frank Nagel, Basel, June 1974.

World premiere Cologne, February 26, 1984 For me, one of the most interesting aspects of composition is to draw the most varied consequences from one and the same musical idea. Thus my pieces Umbra, Mythos, Resonance and Moments Musicaux, for all their disparity, form a group of works in that they are based on a common Klanggestalt, a 34-note melodic-harmonic structure from whose formal basis the overall shape of the piece is derived by projection. I have called the method 'Gestalt composition', Thus there are 12 clearly differentiated formal characters or motives, which appear frequently in irregular sequence and are variously interconnected. The 'bell' motives play a special role here: the piano part frequently bears the instruction quasi Campane, Campanelli, Campane grandi.(York Holler, translated by Niall Hoskin)World premiere Cologne, February 26, 1984.
