Inspired by his friend, the composer Balakirev Tchaikovsky decided in 1869 to write an overture to Shakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet. The work was completed the same year and received its premiere soon thereafter, on March 4th, 1870 in Moscow under the direction of Nikolay Rubinstein. Following the performance the composer worked over the piece again at Balakirev's instigation: he wrote a new introduction and altered the return and the end, too. The new version was first performed under the baton of Napravnik in St Petersburg on February 5th, 1872. By that time it had become clear that the composition was closer to the genre of symphonic poem than to that of a theatrical preludewhich is also indicated by the subtitle: 'fantasy overture'. In the 1880s Tchaikovsky carried out further changes in the score and thus the third version of Romeo and Juliet emerged that was first performed by Ippolitov-Ivanov as conductor in Tbilisi on April 19th, 1886.

Franz Schubert wrote the two movements of the Unfinished Symphony in October 1822. The torso has since been posing riddles to posterity, which first learned of the existence of this masterpiece in 1865 through the simultaneous first edition and world-premiere performance. There seems to have been no external reason for its creation. Did Schubert really consider the piece only as an experiment that did not warrant any continuation? It should be noted, however, that Schubert sketched the Scherzo up to the beginning of the Trio, and even fully orchestrated nine measures of this movement.

Along with Symphonies Nos. 76 and 77 Haydn composed Symphony No. 78 for a journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H. C. Robbins Landon referred to these works as the “English Symphonies†as they are stylistically closely linked to “the London Bachâ€, Johann Christian Bach. In a letter Haydn wrote to his Paris publisher Charles-Georges Boyer in 1783, he described the works as “Leicht und nicht vil Concertirendâ€, meaning they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas, and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€. To date, Bärenreiter has published the complete performance material for several of Haydn’s “Sturm und Drang†symphonies as well as the complete London and Paris symphonies.

Beethoven did not work continuously on this symphony and interrupted his work a couple of times. As the sketches show, he presumably wrote down first ideas in the autumn of 1800.No other autograph material has survived. As Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven, bitterly reports, Beethoven gave him the autograph, but it was unfortunately stolen by a friend, out of pure friendship. In April 1803, the composition was premiered publicly, together with the first symphony and the third piano concerto with Beethoven himself as soloist. Although Beethoven's first two symphonies are still influenced by Haydn and Mozart, novelties can already be discovered. The second symphony starts breaking away from traditional forms and lets us surmise the monumentality of Beethoven's innovation. The editor, Armin Raab, critically illuminates the transmission of the work and its sources. He also clears up a wide spread belief in older literature, that this cheerful work might have been composed parallel to the Heiligenstadter Testament. The practical performance material by Breitkopf & Hartel is based on the music text of the New Beethoven Complete Edition and constitutes the authoritative reading of Beethoven research.

Beethoven’s incidental music op. 84 was written in 1809 for a performance of Goethe’s drama “Egmont†at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Numerous composers of the day tried their hand at writing music for the dramatic material of Goethe’s tragedy, several in collaboration with the author himself. The overture reflects the themes of the play through its expressive music, and over the last two hundred years it has become one of the most popular works by Beethoven conceived for the stage. For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on various manuscript sources including a handwritten set of parts which has never been taken into account before. Thus, numerous discrepancies such as missing notes in the flute part or unclear bowing could be clarified for the first time.

The new scholarly-critical edition of the score of Rameau’s “ballet hroïque†Les Indes galantes finally clears up its convoluted source history. At the first performance, on 23 August 1735, it consisted of a prologue and three acts: Le Turc gnreux, Les Incas du Prou and Les Fleurs. But Les Fleurs already proved controversial in the early performances, and from 11 September of that same year it was given a wholly new form. For the revival on 10 March 1736 Rameau and Fuzelier added an entirely new act Les Sauvages, and in the years that followed, the “ballet hroïque†was presented either complete (1743, 1751 and 1761) or abridged with a prologue, Les Incas du Prou and Les Sauvages (1751–73).With regard to the instrumental movements (dances and descriptive pieces), the present publication is based on the complete edition Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR) volumes IV/2 and IV/7 edited by Sylvie Bouissou which are currently in preparation. It includes not only the orchestral pieces in the version deemed valid by Rameau in 1736 (with version 2 of Les Fleurs and Les Sauvages), but also those from the first version of Les Fleurs (1735) as well as its 1743 and 1773 revisions. Performers are thus given a complete selection of all the orchestral numbers from one of Rameau’s central stage works for use also in concert performance.

A slow and somber Grave introduction leads to a light-hearted Allegro, presenting an ideal piece to teach sonata form to your students. The clearly marked bowings and artist-level fingerings will save precious rehearsal minutes and contribute to a professional sound. This arrangement re-scores the first movement of Sinfonia No. 9 from six voices, requiring two separate viola parts, to the traditional five-voice string orchestra. Consistent with selected professional performances of the work, the first of two recapitulations has been seamlessly omitted to create a more balanced form, eliminate redundancies akin to counterpoint exercises, and showcase the young composer's emerging creativity by emphasizing his striking use of the key of A-major before reaffirming the home key. The elimination of a repeat reduces the duration to 8:30. (11:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

New edition of this hitherto unpublished 13-minute work, which was first performed in 2002 by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. The title clearly suggests a parade; but, as Lindberg points out, in Spanish, 'parada' also denotes a bus-stop or taxi-rank: a wry acknowledgement, perhaps, of the long wait for a slow movement from this composer at that time. For him, Parada is the middle panel of a loosely conceived triptych, the flanking sections of which are Feria (1997) and Cantigas (1999). Lindberg draws a parallel with Debussys Images, in which each of the three parts was conceived and premiered separately, and retains its own identity.

Johannes Brahms was long reluctant to compete with Beethoven in the field of symphonic music. With his D-major Serenade in six movements, the young composer deliberately chose a genre that had had its golden era in the 18th century, thus before Beethoven. Initially, he even conceived the Serenade for a smaller setting, but decided on a full orchestra in 1860. But even then, it was slow in becoming an audience success. The new Brahms Complete Edition has chosen as its principal source a copy of the scores first edition that Brahms used as his personal work copy. There, however, errors remained undiscovered, and recurred in later print runs as well. It was not until the new Brahms Edition that a music text of the D-major Serenade is finally being published, a text that clearly heeds all of the composers emendations and eliminates other shortcomings.

Though not as popular as his famous 8th and 9th symphonies, Dvorák's Symphony No. 7 in D minor is a masterpiece worthy of serious study and performance. The scherzo movement has been abridged and simplified from 6/4 to 6/8 for playability, but the spirit of Dvorák comes through clearly. Full of the composer's trademark hemiola, this arrangement by Todd Parrish gives melody and countermelodies to all parts and ends with an exciting, powerful conclusion. The optional timpani part gives even more strength to your performance. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
