Exceptional singer Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) owes his early successes to the ?songs for voice and piano? genre, whose raison d?etre he defines in his journal as follows: ?To highlight a poem, word for word but without uniformity; to emphasize its meaning without distorting it; to shine light upon one idea, obscure another and present it all in vocal, sung form; to produce a sharp, precise sensation by touching a heartstring or evoking an image - all in a well-structured and tastefully written piece?. Enhanced by an audio version attached as a download card, this anthology of songs should dispel a good many misconceptions. This is no salon miniature: L?Heure exquise radiates an infinite tenderness, exalted by the high vocal cadences of O Bien-Aimee! and C?est l?heure exquise, which surely wrought tears from the author of the verses, Verlaine. Tyndaris, the jewel of Heures latines, clears a crystal-clear space given over to the delights of slumber and of love. Like D?une prison and Cygnes, these songs do more than wet the eyes: they grip the heart..

Cecil Armstrong Gibbs was a prolific and versatile English composer of the 20th century. Gibbs is best known for his output of songs, but he also wrote a considerable amount of music for the amateur choirsthat he conducted. His reputation as a song-writer largely lies in his natural gift for text setting - he insisted on giving priority to the words over the music and had very clear musical ideas on what a song shouldbe.
These principles prevailed when writing The Cherry Tree in 1949 - the Voice is clearly put to the foreground, with the Piano only supporting the singer in the background, so a confident and capableperformance is needed from the soloist. Words by Margaret Rose. Performance time approximately 3 minutes.

Farewell MusicWith the Ernste Gesaenge (Serious Songs) for baritone and string orchestra Hanns Eisler created at the end of his life a key work whose complex message becomes more than clear from the music settings of texts by five different poets, together with the Holderlin motto articulated in the prologue. It reflects - between resignation and hope - the difficult current state of societal development. At the same time, not least by harking back to earlier works, it is a kind of quintessence of his composing. The piano arrangement of the subtle orchestral accompaniment is intended not only as a study aid for singers, but also as a work for public performance.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, Harawi is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Published in 1948, Harawi for Soprano and Piano accompaniment is a song cycle in the style of love songs of Andean music. The cycle explores themes of life and death, and have significant meaning to Messiaen, whose first wife, Claire Delbos, had begun to suffer from mental illness in the years preceding the composition. Harawi is made up of twelve movements and a typical performance lasts around fifty minutes. This edition of the popular Messiaen work is clear and well-presented. Harawi is essential to all advanced Sopranos seeking to expand and vary their repertoire..
