Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. The heroic bass aria, a statement of the certainty of faith, forms a weighty counterpart to the opening movement. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104200.

The Carus program featuring music of the Court of Dresden has been expanded with the publication of the first edition of the great masses of Johann David Heinichen, who, next to Hasse and Zelenka, was the most important musical representative of this capital of Saxony. A peculiarity of this work is the fact that Heinichen inserted an actual concerto movement for solo flute, 2 oboes, strings and continuo between the Gloria and Credo, which recommends the Mass for concert performances. Several elements contribute to the Christmas character of this mass, which is distinguished by the fine skillfulness of its composition: structural means, such as motives in triads, the symbol of gently rocking, traditional themes and a fitting instrumentation with trumpets and flutes. Because of its catchy, easiliy graspable quality this Messa Pastorale, published here in a first edition, is highly suited for liturgical use. C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the Hymn to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive (empfindsam) and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3321500.

The cantata Sie werden euch in den Bann tun, part of Bach's first Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas and the earlier of two compositions of the same name, was probably first performed on the last Sunday after Ascension in May 1724. The text is concerned with suffering and the Antichrist, both of which are overcome by Christian faith. By employing all four ranges in solo capacities Bach creates the greatest possible variety. It opens, unusually, with a duet for tenor and bass, accompanied by two oboes and basso continuo. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104400.

This nine-movement psalm composition allows all the participants to shine, in some cases with rich virtuosity: the string ensemble in the opening Sonata; the solo singers and choir in the chaconne-like first vocal movement, Singet dem Herrn; also the solo singers in two duets (alto + tenor, soprano + alto), an alto solo and an extensive bass solo; the choir in two further movements - a fugue on the 6th verse of the psalm Es stehet herrlich und prachtig fur ihm and the concluding movement in two sections, Betet an den Herrn, which ends with a brilliant fugue on Es furchte ihn alle Welt. This is a festive sacred work suitable for many occasions (including weekday Epiphany psalm services and for services on the 4th Sunday after Easter). The present edition presents the source material in revides form, transcribed into current editorial and performance usage. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912400.

The first edition of a Missa in F by Giovanni Platti (ca. 1690-1763) is a rarity. Platti served at the Court of the Counts of Schonborn-Wiesentheid, and during his more than 40 years of service at the Court he worked for more than five masters and each of them knew how to make use of his musical abilities. Thus, in addition to his position as a virtuoso oboist, singer and violinist, he was also entrusted with the musical education of musicians. The Missa in F major is primarily a composition for choir; it is very singable, its construction is transparent and it is accompanied by only four strings and an organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067700.

It may assumed that this Mass dates from the earlier part of Richter's career. The scoring is relatively light, and in its overall dimensions the C major Mass belongs to the category of the missa brevis rather than that of the cantata mass such as Richter often composed. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4064800.

The cantata Freue dich, erloste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach's last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John's Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3103000.

Uns ist ein Kind geboren is one of Telemann's most beautiful Christmas cantatas, which features an opening duet for two sopranos based on Polish-Moravian folklore, as well as two substantial choral movements. The two horns allotted to the second choral movement to the text Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe can be replaced by two flutes. This is supported by a source from the Telemann tradition in Frankfurt, in which these parts are present. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3911500.

The Missa in d, composed around 1750, is one of the few surviving compositions of Altnickol. He was the student and later son-in-law of Johann Sebastian Bach. The wealth of forms and at the same time, the clarity of this composition show the influence of his teacher, but above all it shows the expression of an individual style of church music. With its contrapuntal mastery and musical depth this Kyrie-Gloria Mass, presented here in a first edition, represents a high point in this widely disseminated genre. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2706800.

The cantata Nur jedem das Seine (Do justice to all men) BWV 163, for the last Sunday of the Church Year 1714/15, belongs among to those chamber music works which Bach composed for the Weimar Schlosskirche. The instruments are limited to strings, although two obbligato violoncellos are included which together with the solo bass singer and the continuo form a bass quartet unique in Bach's works. The final chorale of the cantata is handed down only as a fragment and was newly reconstructed for our edition by Thomas Riegler. Score available separately - see item CA.3116300.

Bach's chorale cantata with its opening text Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich kann verlassen (Tis well with him who on the Lord trusts just like a child) BWV 139 was performed for the first time on 12 November 1724 in the main Leipzig church service. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout; this is followed by a lively tenor aria Gott ist mein Freund (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria Das Ungluck schlagt auf allen Seiten (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The edition provides for performance by violin or violoncello. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3113900.
