Schumann's Three Romances for Euphonium & Piano, Opus 94, are an example of the highest level of poetic lyricism in the Romantic style. Originally for Oboe, Ralph Sauer has done a superb job in transcribing these three movements of about 12 minutes in length total. The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Low Brass world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Trombone Concerto for Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile.
Mr. Sauer's arrangement brings a beautiful feel to this 4 minute work, which is appropriate for advanced performers.

The Quelques Dances (Some Dances) Opus 26, arranged by Ralph Sauer for Euphonium and Piano were originally composed for Piano during the summer of 1896. The four movements are:

Opus 26 is dedicated to Madame Robert de Bonnieres. Many of Chausson's trademarks are present in this work: lyricism, sensuousness, stateliness and beautiful part-writing combined with constant harmonic progression.
This work of 15 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

The Four Pieces, Op. 70 were written for Cello and Piano in Berlin, 1896. The four movements are titled:

Aria, Finnish, Scottish and Swedish

1. Aria is an Adagio in A minor reminiscent of the Kol Nidre
2. Finnish is a brooding lyrical Andante in G Minor
3. Scottish is a proud song in B major with dotted rhythms
4. Swedish, an unruly Allegro dance in A-B-A form in A minor

Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. They were composed concurrently with his gigantic work Gurre-Lieder. The first five pieces were written in one day and the last one shortly after the death of Gustav Mahler as a rumored tombeau or memorial. Mr. Sauer has deftly arranged these six short pieces of around 5 minutes in length for advanced performers.
