The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody, the hymnresounds in full glory.

Rob Goorhuis schreef de ouverture 'The Battle of Varlar' in 1997, in opdracht van de gemeente De Bildt, ter gelegenheid van het 800-jarig bestaan van de Duitse partnerstad Coesfeld.
Deze compositie werd door de gemeente De Bildtin juni 1997 aan de gemeente Coesfeld als geschenk aangeboden.
Het werk werd door een ad hoc orkest, bestaande uit leden van de Bildtse Muziekschool en de Musikschule Coesfeld o.l.v. Martin de Boer, op 30 november 1997 te Coesfeldin premi?re gebracht.

Het werk brengt een belangrijke gebeurtenis uit de geschiedenis van Coesfeld in herinnering: de slag bij Varlar, die in het jaar 1454 heeft plaatsgevonden.
Deze slag werd geleverd tussen detroepen van Walraf von Mörs onder leiding von Konrad von Diepholz en de troepen van Johan von Hoya onder leiding van Hertog Friedrich von Braunschweig.
Op de heide bij Varlar vielen destijds meer dan 2000 doden. De slag werdgewonnen door Walraf von Mörs.

De compositie beschrijft in vogelvlucht de gebeurtenissen in het jaar 1454.
Allereerst wordt de inwijding van de kapel op de Klinkenberg verklankt in een koraal.
Daarna kondigen de trompettenen de trombones de ophanden zijnde veldslag aan. In het daarop volgende strijdgewoel zijn de geluiden van sabels en degens hoorbaar en ook het geweeklaag van van de gewonden. Als de Hertog van Braunschweig door de troepenvan Walraf verwond wordt en gevangen wordt genomen trekt Konrad von Diepholz met zijn mannen triomfantelijk naar Coesfeld.
Het koraal weerklinkt in volle glorie tegen een feestelijke melodie.

Die Schlacht von Varlar fand im Jahre 1454 in der Gegend der Stadt Coesfeld statt. Rob Goorhuis’ musikalisches Luftbild der historischen Ereignisse beginnt mit einer Hymne zur Einweihung einer Kapelle, dann kündigen Trompeten und Posaunen die bevorstehende Schlacht an. Im folgenden Getümmel ist Säbelgerassel, aber auch das Wehklagen der Verwundeten zu hören, bevor mit der Hymne aus dem Eingangsteil der glorreiche Sieg gefeiert wird.

La bataille de Varlar a eu lieu en l’an 1454 autour de la ville de Coesfeld (Allemagne). Telle une vue aérienne, l’oeuvre composée par Rob Goorhuis brosse le portrait des événements qui s’enchaînent les uns après les autres : un hymne en honneur de la chapelle près du champ de bataille, puis l’affrontement venir, le bruit des bottes et le cliquetis des sabres, les gémissements des blessés puis nouveau l’hymne de l’introduction, repris cette fois dans un tempo plus rapide car il est destiné célébrer la victoire.

Il brano inizia con un inno che simboleggia l’inaugurazione di una cappella, mentre le trombe e i tromboni annunciano l’imminente inizio delle ostilit . For the teacher of instrumental music classes, individual differences among students are inevitable. Unfortunately, the lack of flexible materials frequently forces teachers to adopt a quasi-instructional procedure best described as lockstep, where all students in the class rehearse each exercise until the slow members of the class succeed or until the teacher gives up. The Individualized Instructor was designed with the expectation that students are different. With this method, high-, average-, and low-achieving students in a class are able to progress simultaneously at their own rate according to their interest and ability. In addition, the flexibility of the instructional format often allows twelve or more students to perform different musical material simultaneously, thereby eliminating the “follow the leader” approach to music learning. All study materials in the series are musical. Nonmusical exercises are excluded in favor of folk song literature, musical rounds, and musical ensembles. Furthermore, The Individualized Instructor encourages students to think about their music: to analyze unfamiliar material, generalize previously learned concepts and skills, and synthesize all elements into a musically proficient performance. In addition, this series develops many fundamentals (tonality, phrasing, tempo, and musical style) through the use of the singing voice. Albert Robert Mueller (Muller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. * Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. * Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. * Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets.
