Three Little Nocturnes was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2005. Commissioned by the Cikada Ensemble, with support from NOMUS, and written for Frode Haltli and the Cikada String Quartet. Programme Note: In the first nocturne a slow, falling music emerges on an irregular pulse, filled with high harmonics in the strings. The second nocturne is fast and unrestful music, with a lot of passion, which in a moment runs into a glimpse of a tango. In this movement the accordion is employed in its traditional fashion, using the chord bass, with its “oom-pah-pah†standard chords. The third nocturne is again slow, indeed very slow, and it has German tempo and expression markings. Thepiece ends with a lullaby in the accordion, played with an unusual technique, imitating the string portato. This is accompanied by high harmonics in the strings, while the first violin slowly and softly plays a melody from the second nocturne. Hans Abrahamsen.

In the past years, French music has become a focal point of Breitkopf's orchestral library. With Edouard Lalo's popular violoncello concerto, these new editions of French music now bring publishers Breitkopf and G. Henle together once again in another example of their proven cooperation. Peter Jost, an expert on French music who established his claim to expertise through his Debussy, Franck and Saint-Saens editions, ensures a flawless Urtext edition which is based for the first time on the autograph piano reduction. This piano-cello score shows traces of several layers of arrangements, the last two of which were obviously not taken into account in the first edition. The new edition thus offers a wealth of new, authentic readings.A carefully researched text with clear and spacious printing highlights this sympathetic collaboration of two esteemed publishing houses, Breitkopf & Hartel and Henle. Adler's milestone String Quartet No. 10 was composed for the Cassatt String Quartet for performance at the Bowdoin International Music Festival's 50th Anniversary season in 2014. Built in a single movement of contrasting sections, Adler's 10th will continue to be featured in upcoming concerts by the Cassatt Quartet, including a performance in Beijing in July. The String Quartet No. 10 was written in 2013 for the 50th anniversary of the Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival and is dedicated to the Cassatt Quartet who premiered the work during the 50th anniversary celebration in July 2014.  The work was written with a generous grant from the Fromm Music Foundation. The 10th String Quartet is in one continuous movement but divided into four sections.  The first section is a slow introduction which presents the basic harmonic material of the entire work.  This is suddenly interrupted by a very agitated movement forming a great contrast to the calm of the beginning.  This rhythmic drive comes to a stop and is relieved by the third section which is a variation of the beginning, but is a bit longer and more developed.  This is followed by the final section which again captures the agitation of the second section and brings the work to a wild and most aggressive end.—Samuel Adler.

Inspired by a trip through the mountains of Austria, Vantage Point is a breathtaking excursion in 3/4 with excellent lines and brilliant harmony. The beautifully shaped melody is first presented by Alto Sax 1, Tenor Sax 1 and Trumpet 4 with some light time in the rhythm section. This leads to the full ensemble taking over in a swinging three. Plenty of dynamic contrasts and some interesting 4 against 3 rhythms will make this chart a showcase for your band.

In this work I gave everything I had to give. [...] What I did here I will never do again.Camille Saint-Saens was justifiably proud of his Symphony No. 3 in C minor op. 78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Like Beethoven's Ninth, this so-called Organ Symphony was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, where it received its premiere on 19 May 1886.In this first scholarly-critical edition of the symphony, a great many inconsistencies and mistakes inherent in the previously used edition have been unveiled and corrected. The edition of Symphony No. 3 marks the launch of a large-scale project: the publication of Camille Saint-Saens - Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works. This performing Urtext edition is based on volume BA 10303 from that series.* First scholarly-critical edition of this famous symphony based on Camille Saint-Saens aEUR Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works* Now with separate parts for all winds* Orchestral parts in a large format (25.5 cm x 32.5 cm).

At long last: complete with the Libera me Domenico Cimarosa's Requiem, composed in 1787, achieved widespread dissemination through copies shortly after its premiere, and has remained a repertoire work of classical church music to this day. All the more amazing is the discovery of an authentic, subsequently added Libera me movement that is found in the main sources (autograph score, original parts), but had not been published up to now. The complete liturgical form of the Requiem requires a Libera me and with this new edition, Cimarosa's Requiem can now finally be performed again its entirety, more than 200 years after it was written. Reinmar Emans' new Urtext edition thus contains much more than just the previously known music text. Valuable aid was provided here by a number of contemporary copies which yielded further important details.

This piece was written as an introduction to the key of D minor and to the low second finger in the upper strings. Hopefully your students will enjoy the dark melody and feel the frenzy of the driving eighth notes, especially in the lower strings. The orchestra passes through the eye of the storm in mm. 17-39, but tension builds again in m. 40 as the original melody returns for a stormy finish!

When the mathematically oriented compositional method started losing favour, composers began turning again more strongly to the piano, from the midsixties on, and discovered, as it were, the new poetry of the instrument through effects obtained with harmonics and preparation. For this reason, only a few pieces dating from before 1965 have been selected. Most of the following pieces were composed especially for this anthology. They are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. While the first volume is intended more for the amateur, the second volume presupposes a greater degree of skill. Due to the great number of composers, it was impossible even to pretend to offer a representative cross-section of contemporary German piano music. Several composers had to be excluded because they wrote no notable works for piano. Another criterion influencing the selection of pieces was the effort to present the most varies styles of piano writing possible. Moreover, special notice has been given to the works which display originality, even though their authors are not among the most widely known and marketable musicians of the day.

The phoenix is a mythical symbol that dates back to ancient times, representing the idea of rebirth and being born again out of the ashes. This piece explores the idea of taking a rhythmic motive and developing it in such a way that it gains momentum, then dies away before rising to even greater heights. Set in E minor, this piece works in particular on the finger pattern for D-sharp accidentals in all parts. The fiery theme builds slowly using accented accompaniments and dramatic dynamics to build intensity. A brief lull reveals a lyrical melody, allowing players to perfect four-note slurs with optional shifting in first violin. Then the opening theme returns with even greater fire, growing to a glorious finale.

World premiere Witten 1979This composition is the result of an intense study of the timbre element. It was premiered in 1979 during the Wittener Tage fur neue Kammermusik. The composition is bipartite; it contains a multitude of differentiation processes concerning articulation, linked with a tremendous rhythmic accuracy in every detail, and extremely small melodious shifts. Consequently the sound material is freed from its strait jacket of preconceived, external, and imposed structural restrictions. Minimal tone movements arise, sound spaces with an intense drama, out of which a new time-experience is created for the listener. The composition was inspired by the sculpture La Meditation by Auguste Rodin, which the composer came into contact with during an exhibition at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Rilke wrote about this sculpture: never before has a human body been concentrated like this around its inner essence, never before has it been strained like this by its own soul and eased again by the elasticity of its own blood.(Paul-Heinz Dittrich).
