“Composed by Makoto Shinohara, Kassouga is a piece for advanced Flute players, accompanied by a Piano. This work lasts 6 minutes and is dedicated to Hirohiko Kato. Very difficult, the first section of the piece slowly but expressively and includes a Cadenza by the Flute solo. The second part is then introduced, fast, energetic and rhythmic, before another Cadenza by the Solo Flute, leading to the end of the work finishing really harmoniously. It is a melodious work that is relatively challenging and could be played in recitals or for contests. Makoto Shinohara is a Japanese composer from Osaka. He studied in France with Olivier Messiaen and Tony Aubin and in Germany with Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Gottfried Koenig. He wrote some Orchestral pieces, some chambre music some electronic music and some works for traditional Japanese instruments.â€.

The operas of Marius Felix Lange, especially “Snow White,†“The Canterville Ghost,†“Die Schneekönigin,†“Das Opernschiff oder Am Südpol, denkt man, ist es heisse†have been incredibly successful. Many of his operas have also been performed on foreign stages, including those in Switzerland and France. Other points of emphasis in Lange's work include orchestral compositions and Lieder. The American violinist Hilary Hahn had an unusual yet very clever idea in 2012 when she requested encore pieces from present-day composers. The cycle “In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores†were consecutively premiered by the violinist until the end of the 2012/13 season and recorded on CD. Amongst the submissions selected by Hilary Hahn during the course of an online contest, Marius Felix Lange's violin piece “Nutcracker's Nightmare†immediately ended up amongst the ten best-placed works. The title “Nutcracker's Nightmare†recalls E.T.A. Hoffmann's famous fairytale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,†the gloomily imaginative story in which a wooden toy is awakened to life and has to fight against the powers of darkness.

For Une Belle Histoire, Roland Kernen took his inspiration from the seventies French singer and composer Michel Fugain and his troop of singers and dancers known as “Le Big Bazarâ€. The cheerful melodic line of his 1972 hit Une belle histoire lends itself perfectly for brass band. Add a little French charm to any concert with this throwback to the hippy period of the early seventies. In 1972 werd het gezelschap Michel Fugain et le Big Bazar opgericht, een kleurrijk geheel van muzikanten, zangers en dansers met een hippieachtige uitstraling. Son talent musical s’impose alors comme une évidence. En 1969, il enregistre son tout premier album Je n’aurai pas le temps. Trois ans plus tard, en 1972, il crée la célèbre troupe du Big Bazar, composée de musiciens, chanteurs, comédiens et danseurs aux couleurs hippies. Ensemble, ils sortent le single Une belle histoire qui connaît un immense succès. Jusqu’ la fin des années 1970, la troupe va égrener quelques tubes, avant de se séparer. Dans les années 1980, MichelFugain se diversifie et se lance dans l'animation télé. Si pour la grande majorité du public, il est resté le leader du Big Bazar, Michel Fugain a néanmoins réussit son renouveau artistique après plusieurs années d’absence.Roland Kernen a réalisé un charmant arrangement du premier grand succès du Big Bazar, Une belle histoire. Of the 11 surviving settings of the Mass by Charpentier, the present work, ,Messe de Minuit', ist without doubt one of the most popular. The work belongs to the tradition of the parody-Mass: the composer adapted 10 noels - whose titles are given in the autograph - to the text of the Ordinary. Shining rays stream from the 'Messe de sainte Cecile'. At first people were dazzled, then bewitched, then overcome. This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saens described his impression of what was probably Charles Gounod's best-known setting of the mass. The work written in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of church music, soon became well-known beyond the borders of France and acquired a degree of popularity like almost no other sacred composition. In the Messe de sainte Cecile, Gounod combines sublime simplicity with operatic-dramatic elements and a colorful, effective orchestration. Critical edition in proven Carus quality. The present ode was the first of many commissioned ,The Musical Society' for the annual celebration of St. Cecilia's Day (November 22nd). It was obviously a great success, for the ode was printed in score in 1684 and the Society had to move for the 1684 celebrations to a later hall, the Stationer's Hall. The ode of 1683 shows Purcell's ingenuity in every aspect and set a high standard for all the other composers who followed him among them Blow and Handel. The present edition has the above mentioned print of 1684 as source. Title page dedication and the first and last pages are here reprinted in facsimile. The few obvious misprints in the original have been corrected. Glorious Hill may be performed by a male choir.Text by Pico della Mirandola (1463-1497) from De Hominis Dignitate.Glorious Hill was commissioned by the Hilliard Ensemble and first performed by them at its summer Festival of Voices in Lewes, Sussex, in August 1988. It was the first piece I wrote for the ensemble and I focused on the singers' unique ability to move with ease from early music to tonal music of the present day. There were techniques which I asked for which I hardly needed to notate - the staggered breathing of the two tenors to supply a continuous unbroken held note for example - and the piece moves between passages for solo voices and sections of highly chromatic homophony, almost as if the music were switching between the 12th century of Perotin and the 16th century of Gesualdo. Each of the four voices is given its own solo passage, sometimes accompanied, sometimes quietly supported by the other voices.The title, Glorious Hill comes from the name of the small-town Mississippi setting of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. I wrote the music for the 1987 production of this play at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre, the first time I had written any incidental music for the stage. Williams makes very specific demands in terms of music and there is one particularly powerful scene, the penultimate one, throughout which music and atmospheric sound effects are continuous. The principle character Alma argues passionately about the vital importance of human choice with the man to whom she has, too late, admitted her love. I watched this section every night throughout the 4 week run of the play watching the different ways in which the actress, Frances Barber, played the scene. There is a powerful emotional and philosophical connection between the imagery of this scene and a passage from the Renaissance philosopher Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man which forms the text of Glorious Hill. This passage has been described as one of the few passages in Renaissance philosophy to treat human freedom in a modern way. The text, which is sung in Latin, is addressed by God to Adam before the fall from grace.Gavin Bryars.

This lesser-known, yet solid, text may be from times passed, but the tune is fresh and jaunty. A soloist or unison voices take the first stanza along with piano accompaniment, the second stanza adds the choir singing oo to support the soloist. For the third stanza, the choir divides into two parts, then all join together for the final stanza. A coda builds from unison to SAB, ending in a final outcry from the choir, “To God all praise and glory!â€.
