This noble concert march was commissioned by the Musikverein Heek, Germany, for its 125th anniversary. In German mythology, Donar is the God of Thunder, and in the area around Heek, ‘Thunder Mountain’ is a household name. The work begins with a stately opening, followed by a beautiful trio melody with rhythmical and energetic sections. This is a march that features and showcases a range of musical aspects. It is perfect as an opener or to create variety during a concert. Inspiration for the Three Motets op. 39 was a visit to the romanesque church of Trinita dei Monti. On 20 Dec 1830 Mendelssohn wrote to his parents: The French nuns sing there, and it is wonderfully lovely. ... Now, one should know one more thing: that one is not allowed to see the singers. Therefore I have come to an unusual decision: I will compose something for their voices, which I rememer exactly.... Score available separately - see item CA.4070300.
