The question Why add music to such perfect poetry? preoccupied Schumann long and intensively. His first compositional approach to Goethes Faust began in 1844, but it was not until 1851 that he finally completed the Scenes. At Liszts suggestion, Schumann added an overture in 1853, a symphonic instrumental introduction which atmospherically evokes the action of the Scenes but has no direct thematic reference to them. As an independent overture, the work has been played relatively rarely in concert halls to this day; the general prejudice towards Schumanns late works was no doubt partly responsible for this. The first Urtext edition of the overture was based on the autograph score that was revised by Schumann and served as the principal source. It should give new impulses to the future reception of this work which Paul Dukas hailed as a miracle, from beginning to end.The Faust Overture in its First Urtext Edition.

Composed in 1876, Dvorákâ??s only piano concerto has been overshadowed by his other two concertos, for violin and violoncello, respectively. Performers and editors have often attempted to upgrade this pianistically unassuming work by adding stylisations of their own. Our Urtext edition revaluates the sources, frees the work from subsequent interventions and presents it to full advantage in its authentic form.The principal source of our new edition is the first complete print issued by the publisher Hainauer in 1883, which has been meticulously collated with the autograph. The anonymous original piano reduction is so full of mistakes that editor Robbert van Steijn decided instead to present the version by Karel Å olc.

Bach composed the cantata O God, from heaven look on us BWV 2 for the 2nd Trinity Sunday 1724 as the second cantata of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. It is based on Martin Luther's rewriting of Psalm 112. The opening movement is one of a group of cantata opening movements which are not concertante but kept entirely in the motet style, with the instruments serving only to reinforce the singers. The archaic character of this movement is heightened by the addition of a trombone quartet. The concertante style is all the more significant in the first aria for contralto, solo violin and continuo. The first secco recitative represents a special feature: two fragments of the chorale are woven as arioso into the recitative, both in text and melody; futhermore, they are also taken up canonically by the continuo.
