Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-2+2Vc Obligato-3 in set).

Hungarian composer Ede (Eduard) Poldini (1869-1957) was largely known in his home country for his many operas. In the 1890s, Poldini composed a collection of seven pieces for piano under the title MARIONETTES, IEP 17, the most popular of which is the 2nd movement, La Poupée Valsante (The Dancing Doll), with its fleet, graceful introductory melody. This transcription for violin by Fritz Kreisler is what made Poldini internationally famous.

The musical effect of Prarie Lullaby should be graceful and serene, evocative of a peaceful night on the open plains. To that end, players will need to strive for an unlabored rhythmic flow, smooth bowing and a clear, steady tone as close to p as possible.Beginning at m.39, the violin and viola parts are marked pizzicato. If young players are unable to return quickly to argo at m.53, they may make the bow preparation easier by taking a full measure rest at m.52. This option is marked in the parts and score. The divisi notes at m. 69 are provided for ensembles which lack violas. Ensembles with violas may have them play the lower notes while the second violins play the upper notes.Percussion, which is completely optional, should be very subdued. Choose a bell mallet which allows the tones to be heard just above the strings. the woodblock part is intended to imitate the clip-clop sound of a horse's hooves. Two different sizes of woodblocks or temple blocks are needed. Finding two suitable sounds on one woodblock is difficult. Again, the right mallets are very important. The suspended cymbal should be played with brushes if the string ensemble is small. If the suspended cymbal with brushes cannot be heard above a large number of strings, then sticks should be used instead. The percussion part can be performed by one player, provided the instruments and mallets are set up properly and the player has the skill to make the transitions smoothly. Note the optional rest at mm. 53-54.Performance time with the repeat is two and a half minutes.

Master guitarist Al Petteway ventures into new territory with 15 Celtic-inspired, traditional, and New Age fingerstyle compositions in standard and alternate tunings. Derived from Alâ??s award-winning solo recording of the same title, each piece bears the inimitable Petteway signature of profoundly graceful, inspired innovation. Written in standard notation and tab with several pieces in alternate tunings. Al began his professional music career at the age of 11. He played guitar, drums, and string bass with a variety of rock and folk acts in the Washington D.C. area during the 60â??s, becoming a local legend by the time he went to college to study music composition in 1970. In 1977, Al took a job with The National Geographic Society. His work as Supervisor of Picture Editing for the societyâ??s Image Collection, gave him the artistic freedom to develop his own acoustic guitar style. While long recognized as one of the countryâ??s foremost bluegrass and folk sidemen, Celtic music specialty label Maggieâ??s Music signed Al in 1993 and released Whispering Stones following by The Waters and the Wild-exposing his solo acoustic guitar work to an international audience for the first time. Al left the National Geographic to become a full-time musician in the spring of 1995, just before the release of Midsummer Moon.
