Yoshiko Kurokawa's new proposal of piano technique. The author, Yoshiko Kurokawa, explains that you can easily and effectively learn the basic techniques that are important for piano performance, as described in Chopin's Draft of Technique, Brahms' Practice Book, and Hummel's Theory of Piano Technique. In addition to warm-up and exercise pieces by the auther Kurokawa herself, the book includes works by composers such as Hummel, Clementi, and Mozart, as well as exercise-specific exercises by Japanese composer Yasuhisa Tohma. The book is full of essential elements for piano playing and techniques, such as control of tone and volume balance in accompaniment form, awareness of palm strength essential for playing heavy notes, various ways of playing ornamented notes, tone and joint training depending on how the arms are placed when crossing, and important future techniques using the wrists and arms.

The time had come to pay homage to someone who has been a faithful companion to me for 65 years and has witnessed of the joy and pain I have endured during the writing of all of my opuses, from 8 to 111. Today he still shares my fervor for jazz music and our wonderful complicity has been preserved on my piano solo album, The Last Call...?* which I recorded at the age of 93. This “someone is my instrument, an old grand piano over 100 years old: Blüthner No. 89293, model 190, constructed in 1910 in Leipzig, Germany, and to which I dedicate this Opus 111, the very last of my series of works for piano. The Blüthner-Variationen were composed starting with a theme I had imagined during recording sessions which were done in my home. I named it Blues in Three, since it was related to the traditional harmonic chord progressions of the 12 bar blues, but in 3/4 time. The simple theme, repeated twice, generates 8 variations, each one requiring different pianistic means. It is my hope that future performers will like the undeniably jazzy orientation of this work. Julien-François Zbinden, Lausanne – Valombré, 23 juillet 2012 * The Last Call...?, piano solo album, TCB The Montreux Jazz Label No. 43102.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. In this Symphony in A major, composed in 1785, Haydn provides the flute with concertante solo passages in the Adagio which was perhaps a nod to the instrument’s popularity in France at the time. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Its nickname “L'Ours†(“The bearâ€) derives from the bagpipe-like “drone†accompaniment in the final movement, which presumably made Haydn's contemporaries think of a dancing bear. Composed between December 2014 and November 2015, Moving On developed from an initial short concert piece, written at the request of the piano duo Lauryna Sableviciute and Nicholas Ashton, into a larger work of several related movements reflecting different types of forward motion. Some wander, with no sense of hurry; others - such as fast forward, a kind of frantic boogie-woogie that might accompany a short, speeded-up film of an old American railroad train - dash or are fleeting. As the composer admits, a future destination of Moving On might well be a piece with filmaEUR|.

Sei mein! was written and composed by Peter Cornelius in 1865 for his future wife Bertha Jung. The composer set the poem in short rhyming lines using the scheme aaabcccb, recounting with loving humor what his beloved means to him. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

With its commitment to creating independent musical thinkers through the use of folk songs, Conversational Recorder is a visionary approach to recorder that builds music literacy and independence. This highly anticipated component of John M. Feierabend’s Conversational Solfege is a dynamic and engaging method that seamlessly coordinates with Levels 1 and 2 of the curriculum, an innovative 12-step “ear-before-eye†approach to teaching music literacy. Central to Conversational Recorder are two hundred online audio tracks with coordinating Guided Practice Activities at the beginning of each unit. The online tracks walk students step by step through decoding patterns and songs and are perfectly suited for at-home assignments and virtual instruction. Each of the thirteen units in this resource presents a new rhythm or melody challenge that is reinforced using a series of short musical patterns and songs. To ensure aural mastery before instrumental application, students follow a three-step procedure: (1) sing first, (2) sing while fingering on recorder, and (3) play on recorder. The teacher’s manual includes dozens of recorder activities (techniques) along with an overview of the method, instructions for how to use the online tracks, and tips for teaching fingering, tonguing, and breathing. The appendices also contain sample lesson plans, resources for assessment, fingering charts, and information for teaching recorder to students with disabilities. Conversational Recorder is an ideal program for incorporating recorder instruction into the elementary music classroom. John M. Feierabend, PhD, has spent decades compiling songs and rhymes from the memories of the American people in hopes that these treasures will be preserved for future generations. He is a leading authority on child development in music and movement and served as Professor and Chair of the Music Education Department of the Hartt School of the University of Hartford. Rachel Grimsby is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Illinois State University and has over fifteen years of experience teaching elementary general music. She is a co-author of First Steps in Music with Orff Schulwerk and Feierabend Fundamentals, and her research interests include professional development for in-service teachers and paraprofessionals as well as teaching music to students with disabilities.

Deep-Sky Objects is a cycle of love songs set in the distant future, exploring intergalactic longing and desire. It is scored for soprano, piano quintet, and pre-recorded electronic sounds. When the piano quintet was in its heyday, the subject that permeated so many of the great Romantic song cycles was that of longing and lost love. Deep-Sky Objects transfers this trope to the outer reaches of the universe In the cycle a woman sings of her lover who is far away in a remote planet in some unspecified star system. At moments she remembers a time when they were together, but mostly she longs for him and stoically imagines that his presence, even so remote, gives her hope:I can live in the worldWith your love becauseI know you existat the end of the black universeThe electronics part often references various “sounds from space,” from pulsars (which are routinely converted into audio signals by astronomers), the signals of made-made satellites, actual audio of the Huygens probe landing on Saturn's moon, Titan, as well as many sounds suggestive of the eerie, remote and unfathomable reaches of deep space. Each of the ten songs is preceded by a short sample, or incipit, which creates micro-compositions based on the title of each song. The text is written specifically for Deep-Sky Objects, by Sarah Manguso.–Sebastian Currier.

The music releases pieces of vivid sound one after another into the performance space. It is a baby's march - right foot, left foot, step by step. Innocent, audaciously powerful and immature, the toddler walks planting each step firmly on the ground. Based on a constant beat, the music is deformed with digital and pop expressions. Cute and pop contents and textures are produced and consumed on a massive scale every day. I find beauty in such artificial textures around us. Into this piece of music I put my love and prayers for children and future generations to come. Akiko Yamane.
