Bob Curnow took Ken Hanna's wonderful, latin, medium-tempo tune and made it a bit more accessible for good bands. The ranges are a bit more realistic and practical. This also features alto sax and trumpet (not trombone as originally arranged). The original version is recorded on the Live at Butler University CD. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with only 8 brass).

This is a great swingin' blues chart that is playable by most any band. With solo space for almost anybody, this toe-tapping tune is a great vehicle for opening up a chart to showcase the soloists in your band. Written in the Count Basie style.

Here is another chart written for Stan Kenton (in the mid-1950's), that was never recorded by the band. It is a sensational piece, a real flag-waver which features alto saxophone from top to bottom. Great ensemble figures propel the soloist ever onward. This up-tempo swing chart is refreshing, with band vs soloist, great background figures, a very hip key change and excitement throughout. A wonderful feature for your hot alto saxophonist. Typical, great Holman. 5-5-5-3.

Sierra Music is excited to provide another original from Bob Curnow! 'The Secret of the Blues' is a fresh, new look at the blues with interesting altered changes, dynamics that move from the softest to the strongest possible, and an attitude that will get any audience fired up. This sultry, swinging, screaming blues arrangement is perfect for featuring many soloists (there is space for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, and piano) before the ensemble shines in a dynamic-building, roaring section prior to returning to the melody. The highest trumpet note is a written E. This chart is a must-have! 5-4-4-4.

Short, sweet and swingin'! Willie Maiden's arrangement of I'll Be Seeing You packs a whopper in a tiny box, making this chart perfect as an encoure closer for any set. As recorded by Maynard Ferguson and his orchestra on the album Dancing Sessions, Willie's arrangement makes great use of the trombone section as they carry the melody upfront before passing it around to the rest of the band. There is some space for a short trumpet solo before the band comes roaring in at the end to take it out with a punch! This chart should be in every band's library! 5-4-4-3 (opt. original instrumentation available as 4-4-2-3).

It has a wonderful shout chorus, and an ending that will knock your socks off! It has been edited to include optional parts for a full band. If your rhythm section can burn, well, here it is! 5-4-4-3.

One of those mystery charts that hardly anyone knows about, this chart is a beauty. Mulligan was a master at creating moods and using wonderful chord substitutions, as he did in this medium ballad. The arrangement features Trumpet throughout (written to feature Buddy Childers), and it was played very often by the Kenton Band. The brass ranges and rhythms for all are very reasonable (written Bb above the staff for Trumpet). This is a VERY impressive chart that is easy to play. 5-5-5-4.

This is an easy, medium-rock chart, accessible by any middle school band. Patty Darling has written a very cute and playable piece. The improvised section has the blues scale included for solo reference. Soloists can be chosen by the director. 5-4-4-5.

Originally arranged for George Roberts and the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Johnny Richards' treatment of the beautiful ballad Yesterdays is a bass trombone feature throughout. In typical Kenton fashion, the ensemble writing is stunning, as it dramatically interplays with the featured soloist. Never having been recorded on a Kenton album, this rare gem is a ballad that will challenge your band and astound your audiences. 5-5-5-4.

A big time contemporary urban rock chart that really delivers the heat by L.A. film music writer Lenny Stack. The ranges aren't extreme, but the lead trumpet will need a good solid high C. Very cool!

Hip and cool doesn't have to take a lot of rehearsal time and hard work - at least not with this chart. The ranges are conservative and the rhythms are basic, but you'd never know it from the big and full sound. An open solo section for any instrument on very basic chord changes, plus lots of hard driving ensemble writing make this one a true winner.

This is the Opener on the 1959 The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess album, and it is a great opener for any live concert as well. It is an up-tempo, swinging version of Gershwin's tune. Potts is a master arranger, and he brought it all to this chart. Solo space for trumpet and tenor saxophone. Use this to start your concerts, and you'll never regret it. 5-5-5-4.

Based on a traditional Native American song, Fred Sturm has created a truly amazing masterpiece capturing the beauty of the melody with the intricacies and creativity of a big band. Set in 15/8, this odd-metered tune features flute up front, with solo space for piano and bass, and plenty of powerful ensemble passages. If your band is up to it, you will not regret performing Pueblo de Taos, and your audiences will be delighted with such a bold, fresh selection. 5-4-4-4Flute/Alto Sax 1 (Solo), Alto Sax 2, Tenor Sax 1, Tenor Sax 2, Baritone Sax, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 1, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 2, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 3, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Trombone 3, Bass Trombone 4, Piano (Solo), Guitar, Bass (Solo), Drums.
