In a world where food is rationed based on wealth and status, people experiencing poverty have formed a task force to gain equality. Insurgence, by Rossano Galante, begins with a driving, rhythmic ostinato in the winds, low brass, and percussion. Soaring, aggressive horn lines take the lead in this post-apocalyptic setting. This theme is passed to the trumpets, then the winds, heralding their presence in this work. The piece transitions to a slightly lyrical section, capturing the pain and struggle these humans must endure during these challenging times. The piece recapitulates the main theme with the full ensemble, bringing this composition to a thunderous conclusion. (3:30).

The suite is in three movements: 1. The Springs (fanfare) - “The Springs†is the local residents' name for the town, and this first movement starts with a stirring fanfare for brass and percussion, opening with bold unison horns. The rest of the brass join in and woodwind add decorative figures. After a short change of style, the opening material reappears to close the movement. 2. Seven Falls - Seven Falls is a spectacular waterfall near to the town which cascades 181 feet in seven distinct steps down a solid cliff of pikes peak granite. In this movement, high woodwinds describe the sparkling water as it descends to a popular lookout post near the bottom of the falls. 3. Pikes Peak - To the north-west of the town and reaching an altitude 14,110 feet, Pikes Peak is the farthest east of the big peaks in the Rocky Mountain chain, which contributed to its early fame among explorers and pioneers, and made it the symbol of the 1859 Gold Rush to Colorado with the slogan, “Pikes Peak or Bust.†It is the second-most visited mountain in the world behind Japan's Mount Fuji. This atmospheric movement describes the majesty of the mountain and is based around the fanfare from the first movement. Opening on a solitary bassoon, it is not long before the main theme appears under bubbling woodwinds. The music reaches a passionate climax at which point the opening fanfare reappears to bring the whole work to a close.

A Man’s Destiny has the Frisian line ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. This piece opens with three repeated notes, then a short introduction leads to a robust theme from clarinets, horns and trombones. A restless bridge passage leads to a syncopated tune from the alto saxophone and then to a third theme from a solo euphonium. A graceful second subject, initially on a solo clarinet, leads back to a recall of the introductory material before a full-scale recapitulation. An intense allargando leads to a full-band version of the second subject under a running woodwind passage, which leads to a short coda.

The Ascent from Darkness, by Rossano Galante, pays homage to the human race that endured the pandemic. He creates a musical landscape that depicts strength, tenacity, and compassion. The main theme, which is broad and lyrical, is stated by horns and winds. As the piece develops, the theme is played by full, chordal brass accompanied by rhythmic woodwind lines. The B section is lightly orchestrated with a solo oboe accompanied by the clarinet section, slowly growing to a tutti statement. The piece recapitulates with bold brass chords. The work ends as it begins, quietly incorporating the first motive. (4:00).

Arabian Sandscapes by Rossano Galante is a stunning work that opens with a bold, unison statement of the main theme by the brasses. After the introduction, a rhythmic ostinato follows in the winds, which, by adding the horns and trumpets, creates an even more heroic feel. The piece then yields to a lyrical, plaintive theme for a contrasting section of this emotional work. A recapitulation of the main theme drives the piece to a riveting climax depicting the faraway lands of Arabia. (5:20) This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Catalina March, an original composition by Steve Hodges, contains elements of both traditional and contemporary marches. The spirited opening theme features a playful give-and-take between the brass and the upper woodwinds. A contrasting minor trio section is presented by the clarinets, saxophones and horns before returning to a charming woodwind variation of the initial presentation. Following an effective modulation, the piece finishes with a powerful restatement of the opening theme with woodwind countermelodies complementing the strong brass and percussion. This exciting march would be an excellent way to begin a concert! (2:35).

This new work by Gary Fagan is sure to produce shivers up and down your spine! Introduced by a haunting woodwind motif that plays during the majestic trumpet opening, the mood quickly changes to that of joy and celebration. The mood changes in the middle section, introducing a beautiful melody in the woodwinds, which is then shared by the brass, with a stirring countermelody in the horns. An abbreviated A section returns followed by a restatement of the opening trumpet theme which brings this piece to an exciting conclusion.

Leroy Anderson (1908-1975), ever-popular in the concert hall for his light orchestral pieces, found a great musical ally in the Boston Pops Orchestra under its director, Arthur Fiedler. Premiering many of his works, they introduced to the world such gems as Sleigh Ride, Jazz Pizzicato, and The Syncopated Clock. In the 1950s, Anderson began to record his music under the Decca label, and out of these sessions came a short piece for orchestra, THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING, first recorded on June 25, 1954. A solo horn introduces the melody, which drifts through the orchestra into an idyllic finish. An American Pops classic in it's original scoring, this work is part of the Anderson Classics Series by E.F. Kalmus. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: (3Sax-AAT): 4.3.3.1: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).

A winning and moderately easy concert piece that takes its name from one of the moons of Jupiter, Callisto is a vibrantly scored set of two variations on a fragment of a theme from the Jupiter movement of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets. The characteristic flatted-7th of much English folk music is retained in both the quick opening section and the slow, reflective variation that forms the B section of this clever and appealing overture-style piece.

Solo claves usher in the authentic Latin percussion section that sets the style for Pico Rivera. A simple but effective bass line joins the percussion section in establishing an interesting accompaniment for the syncopated melody that follows. Rich harmonies that utilize a variety of seventh chords dominate the second theme and the stop time percussion fills that open the coda. A brief modulation brings us to a restatement of the opening melody with a new countermelody in the trumpets and horns. Pico Rivera is a city in Southern California that has a long tradition of producing excellent bands.

Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the ‘blues’ melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!

Maritime March is a jaunty British-style march opening up in the key of C natural minor (Aeolian mode). Sixteenth notes combined with simple syncopations highlight the second strain in a question-and-answer section that pits the woodwinds against the brass. The traditional trio moves to the key of E-flat and features the low clarinets in unison with the French horns. This is a very appealing march that will be easy to put together and really make your young band shine. This piece correlates to Accent on Achievement Book 2, Page 15.

The ultimate full score medley of beautiful melodies from the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke (1997, dir. Hayao Miyazaki), arranged for concert band in the series: New Sounds in Brass (NSB). Grade 3; Duration: approx.8'50; Composed by Joe Hisaishi; Arranged by Takashi Hoshide. Arranger Takashi Hoshide says, I have selected beautiful melodies from the soundtrack of 'Princess Mononoke' (1997, directed by Hayao Miyazaki) and arranged them into a medley. What can be said about these songs as a whole is that they combine a grand continental scale with the delicacy that reflects Japanese emotions. Since there are no upbeat songs in this selection, I had to work hard on the arrangement, but this allowed for creating contrasts and transitions between each scene in the performance. 'Ashitaka Sekki (English title: The Legend of Ashitaka)' - 'Sekki' means a story that is not recorded but passed down orally. In this anime, this can be considered a sub-main theme. The song starts with a feeling that the story is about to begin and, once the theme kicks in, aim for a grand performance to convey its scale. 'Encounter' - This is the music that plays during the scene where the protagonist Ashitaka meets San. Interestingly, the motif of the main theme 'Princess Mononoke' is used in this melody. Here, let's pursue the shifts in the timbre of individual phrases, creating a beautiful and aesthetic soundscape. 'Princess Mononoke' - This is the main title of the anime. The melody line is carried by horns and trumpets.
