Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by “De Arumer Swarte Heap,“ the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. Hij stelt de nationale held direct in het begin aan ons voor met een grillig capricciothema. Daarna volgt: ‘De Arumer Swarte Heap’, zijn bende mannen dieten strijde trok tegen de Hollanders. Een moment van rust valt in. Maar niet voor lang, want de strijd barst in alle hevigheid los! Het werk eindigt met het terugtrekken van een gedesillusioneerde Grutte Pier...Pierius Magnus ist eine historische Figur aus Friesland, ein Bauer und Aufständischer gegen die holländischen Unterdrücker um 1500. Ob Held oder Barbar lässt sich heute einfach nicht zweifelsfrei belegen, aber der Komponist fand die Geschichte einfach zu spannend, um sie nciht als Inspirationsquelle zu nutzen. In Pierius Magnus wird der Nationalheld gleich zu Beginn des Werkes mit einem kapriziösen Thema vorgestellt, gefolgt von seinem Haufen De Arumer Swarte Heap. Dann- bevor der Kampf beginnt- tritt ein Moment der Ruhe ein, bevor Pier und seine Truppe in den Kampf ziehen. Das Werk endet mit dem Rücken des desillusionierten Pierius.Pier Gerlofs Donia est l’un des personnages les plus célèbres de l’histoire de la Frise au cours des années 1500. L’Histoire ne nous permet pas de discerner les réelles intentions de cet homme surnommé le grand Pier de par son imposante stature. Était-il un combattant de la liberté ou un authentique barbare ? Le compositeur a trouvé toutefois en cette emblématique figure, une source d’inspiration fascinante. Pierius Grelofs Donia è una delle più celebri figure della storia della regione olandese della Frisia nel corso del 1500. La storia non ci permette di discernere le reali intenzioni di quest’uomo soprannominato Grutte Pier (il grande Pier) per la sua statura imponente. Fu un paladino della libert o un semplice barbaro? Il compositore ha trovato in questa emblematica figura un’affascinante fonte d’ispirazione. Le prime misure di Pierius Magnus descrivono l’eroe nazionale attraverso un tema capriccioso. Un secondo tema dipinge la brigata nera di Arum, pronta ad affrontare gli olandesi. Un breve momento di calma fa da preludio al combattimento, prima che Pier Grelofsentri in azione. Disilluso, il grande Pier si ritira; la fine dell’opera sancisce anche la fine del combattimento.

Inspired by the memory of an influential music educator, Carol Brittin Chambers has woven a multitude of grooves, colors, and uplifting themes into To Create a Voice. Chambers has attempted to convey distinct moods and emotions that this educator tried to instill in his students. In honor of this dynamic teacher, you will hear Hot Cross Buns cleverly placed throughout the composition.To Create a Voice was commissioned by the Valley Concert Band in Stockton, California. The piece premiered in October 2017, in memory and celebration of Chris Anderson, a local musician and educator.When writing this piece, I tried to convey certain moods and emotions throughout: soulful at the beginning with calm woodwind chords and solo trombone; increased energy throughout the various sections of the piece; exploration of different grooves and colors; an uplifting, emotional ending that leaves the listener with a sense of how positive and loving Chris was.This piece is largely inspired by a specific quote from Chris:Most people would consider the sounds students first make on their instruments to be cringe-worthy, but to me that’s music to my ears, because that’s the first time students put a voice to their instrument. Over time those voices become stronger; they become clear, more confident, and get to a point where they use those voices to communicate with each other, and to their audiences.To relate to the first notes on the instrument idea, I used motifs based on the first notes most beginners ever play, do-re-mi, which are introduced at the beginning of the piece with the trombone solo, Chris’ instrument. During the section at m. 15, the brass introduce a chorale that I named Chris’ Theme while the woodwinds keep reminding us of do-re-mi. Later in the piece (mm. 71 and 79), I use these notes again, but in reverse, which becomes a reference to the first song most beginners learn, Hot Cross Buns. This section is also meant to portray Chris’ quirky and joking side. In mm. 75 and 83, Chris’ Theme presents itself again a couple of times in response to Hot Cross Buns.Toward the end, at the uplifting moment (m. 97), do-re-mi is heard again, but this time in harmony with mi-fa-sol. This represents the ultimate satisfaction we all feel as musicians when we have finally progressed enough to play in harmony with others. The half-time feeling in 3 at that moment also has significance, relating (rhythmically) to those important three notes again.I really hope you enjoy performing and listening to this piece as much as I have enjoyed creating it!

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher.In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The première, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!1834 - Machara Impressions was a commission for the 175th anniversary of the band Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher from the town of Grevenmacher - formerly Machara - in Luxemburg.
