We’re proud to showcase the legendary creativity of Lloyd Larson as he breathes new life into the time-honored hymns of our faith in the worship celebration, A Festival of Hymns. There’s never been a more meaningful time to come together in song, and this is the perfect opportunity for choir and congregation to come together around our shared heritage of hymnody. A Festival of Hymns can be presented as either a seasonal or non-seasonal work, and a number of performance options are available, including an SAB choral version and an optional full orchestration. Many of the hymn arrangements are available individually, as is a collection for four-hand piano duet, A Keyboard Festival of Hymns, Vol. 1, that may be used to accompany these outstanding settings.

The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3111700.

On the 2nd March 1714 Bach, who until then had been employed as a chamber musician and organist at he Court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar, was promoted to the position of concert master, and was instructed to relieve the ailing Kapellmeister Johann Samuel Drese by composing and performing new pieces monthly for the church. Following the cantata Himmelskonig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, the present cantate was the second work which Bach composed under the terms of his new contract. The extraordinary musical ambition evident in the first Weimar cantatas may have had its roots in the fact htat Bach aspired to become Drese's successor as Court Kapellmeister. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3101200.
