Based on Wallace Stevens' poem The Planet on the Table this string quartet's world is made of the music and sounds of remembered times or of something heard that the composer, Martin Bresnick, liked. The quartet has five movements, each headed by a quotation from one of Stevens' poems as a point of departure or pathway into those remembered sounds and music. What matters is that my music, like his (Stevens') poetry, should bear some lineament or character, some affluence, if only half perceived in the poverty of its sounds, of the planet of which it was part..

Steven Foster's 1855 tune is paired by this arranger with his own paraphrase of Psalm 126. The arrangement utilized various voicings, though predominantly SATB. Varied accompaniments lead to the third stanza that begins, “Lord, you flow as a river through dry and barren lands,” with a characteristically rippling piano part. Though the assembly can join in the refrain, this makes a solid stand-alone choir piece.

Referring to the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, director Steven Spielberg states that John Williams' music “was clearly responsible for half the success of the movie.” This suite features two of the signature musical sequences. In “Out to Sea,” the trio of shark hunters led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by the “Shark Cage Fugue,” a classically inspired and sophisticated accompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.
