This work was commissioned by Eurofestival. Ever since antiquity, mankind has been fascinated by the lion: symbolising courage, strength and temperance. Many have made use of the lion to represent themselves in symbols and emblems. In five movements the composer describes both the history of the lion throughout centuries, as well as the characteristics. A challenging idea to turn into music! The final movement ‘King of Kings’ is extremely spectacular. A great choice for thematic concerts or as a main piece in your concert or contest.Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van het Eurofestival. Al sinds de oudheid is de mens gefascineerd door de leeuw. Dit imponerende dier staat voor moed, kracht en beheersing: er bestaan dan ook talloze wapenschilden en blazoenen met de leeuw als symbool. In vijf delen verklankt de componist zowel de geschiedenis van de leeuw door de eeuwen heen als de kenmerken van de koning der dieren. Een geweldig idee om zo’n onderwerp in muziek te beschrijven! Het laatste deel, ‘King of Kings’, is zonder meer spectaculair te noemen. Een uitstekende keuze voor een thematisch concert of als hoofdwerk van een concert of op een concours. Dieses Werk wurde vom Eurofestival 2016 in Auftrag gegeben. Bereits seit der Antike übt der Löwe eine große Faszination auf den Menschen aus, da er als Symbol für Mut, Stärke und Temperament gilt. Viele haben den Löwen verwendet, um sich selbst in Emblemen und Wappen darzustellen. Der Komponist beschreibt in fünf Sätzen sowohl die Geschichte des Löwen im Laufe der Jahrhunderte sowie seine Charakteristika. Eine große Herausforderung, dies musikalisch umzusetzen! Der letzte Satz, King of Kings“, ist atemberaubend. Das Stück eignet sich hervorragend für ein thematisches Konzert oder als Hauptstück für Konzerte und Wettbewerbe.Cette œuvre a été commandée par Eurofestival 2016. The music of the Caribbean is a mixture of styles encompassing traditions that reflect the nature of its many islands and ethnic groups which inherited a multitude of rhythms imported by slaves from West Africa. Europeans brought with them Western-style melodies and harmonies, still used today in Trinidadian calypso, a traditional folk genre which gained worldwide popularity thanks to internationally famous artists such as the American singer Harry Belafonte (Calypso, Island in the Sun, Day-O/Banana Boat Song). Fascinated by this music which embodies the very spirit of exoticism, Roland Kernen composed Caribbean Calypso, a composition with softly swaying rhythms whichfollow a gentle and subtle melodic line in a rum and cigar-flavoured atmosphere. The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. Il titolo proviene da una teoria del matematico greco Pitagora, secondo la quale il cosmo è retto dalle stesse leggi che governano i rapporti di frequenza tra le note della scala musicale. Questa composizione inizia con un assolo di corno chiamato t = 0, nozione che definisce il momento del big-bang. The Lonely Planet (Il pianeta solitario) è una meditazione sulle circostanze che hanno portato alla creazione della terra. Asteroids and Shooting Stars (Asteroidi e Stelle cadenti) descrive i molteplici oggetti che si muovono nello spazio e che rappresentano unrischio per il nostro pianeta. In this composition William Vean takes you on a journey through the fascinating and exciting world of animals. Apart from it being a composition filled with special effects, Animal Kingdom contains many educational elements, such as playing inswing (triplets feeling), chromatics, flutter tonguing, gypsy tuning, varying keys, and, of course, dynamics and articulation. The melodic lines occur in all four voices, as well as in all percussion parts, providing each musician with theopportunity to play a solo or to accompany. Highly recommended for your youth band! William Vean is an educational composer. He knows how to musically shape the special elements from our daily lives. His music is therefore veryexpressive, containing creative solutions to possible problems. Special ways of playing make his music particularly interesting for the winds, but the percussion section is also featured in his special effects. The world of the animalsalways plays on ones imagination. In Animal Kingdom, William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner: Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style alsoemphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales. Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal, but for Eduard (Eddy for friendsand intimates) it is his daily walk. Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys, accompanied by special effects in the percussion section. Curtis Camel - Curtisthe Camel trudges across the desert, feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds. BettyButterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly, and without worries, flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly. Marvin Monkey - A swing monkey stirs up the feelings. Evenmembers of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience? Each part has its own difficulties and challenges. Important in the first part is playing in swing (triplets feeling). This can be practised usingscales. In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important. In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. New sounds are, of course, welcome. Curtis the Camel introduces thegypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part. Marvin the Monkey brings back the swingrhythm that was introduced in the first part, alternated by a straight part with attention to chromatics and articulation. A story teller will definitely be an asset when performing this composition.William Vean neemt u mee in de fascinerende en verrassende wereld van het dierenrijk. Naast leuke speelmuziek vol ''special effects'', is deze compositie zeer educatief van opzet. Als interessant inhoudelijke zaken komenonder andere aan de orde - het in swing spelen (triolen feeling), chromatiek, flatterzunge, zigeunertoonsoort, afwisselende maatsoorten en natuurlijk dynamiek en articulatie. Tevens lopen de melodielijnen zowel door alle 4 destemmen als alle percussie partijen, zodat iedere muzikant de gelegenheid krijgt om te soleren dan wel te begeleiden. Een aanrader voor uw jeugdorkest! De dierenwereld spreekt muzikaal gezien altijd tot de verbeelding.William Vean heeft op bijzondere wijze een aantal dieren neergezet. De componist weet op een bijzondere wijze elementen uit het dagelijkse leven muzikaal vorm te geven. Zijn muziek is daarom erg beeldend, de problemen aanwijsbaarmaar de oplossingen zijn creatief. Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever, yet at the same time it is an obscure one, for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart. After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’. Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it. The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns, however, he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad, he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788). Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes, both political and religious. Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that, though, the song is also sung on many other occasions sometimes with different lyrics, which usually have Love, Friendship and/or Parting as their themes, as these go well with the fascinating melody. In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke. Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquintance be forgot. And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne. Misschien wel het meest bekende Schotse lied, maar tegelijkertijd ook het minst bekende, er zijn er maar weinig mensen die de tekst mee kunnen zingen. This fantasy tells the story of Oregon, one of Americas north-western states. Traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railroad, the listener is taken through the fascinating Oregon landscape. Indians, cowboys, golddiggers and hooded wagons willfile past on this adventurous journey. The piece has some similarities with a soundtrack of a movie. Various melodies, which could be the main themes of a movie, pass the review.The piece begins in a slow movement, introducing the first theme inminor. Then we hear in the following fast movement the trombones imitate the train, whistling the steam-flute. We hear the characteristic minor theme again, but now in different variants(also in major). The rythmic structure of western stile androck succeed each other. This is leading to the slow movement, where the signals of horns and trumpets introduce a wonderful vocal melody. After this characteristic melody, the fast movement appears shortly again, the trombones whistling thesteam-flute again (now in major). We hear also some musical elements, that plays a part in the following Presto. Barchanges, jazzy chords, interesting rhytmic patterns (with bongo) and an original theme are the characteristics of this Presto. Afterthis, the horns announce the last section of the piece. Interesting is the fact that we hear in this Allegro section a variant of the vocal melody in the slow movement. Also the Presto theme returns shortly, followed by the Allargando, which is agrand characteristic end of a soundtrack. The movie of our travelling fantasy has come to an end.Deze fantasie vertelt het verhaal van Oregon, een van de noordwestelijke staten van Amerika. Carl Wittrock became inspired by huge icefields surrounding the South Pole. Colourfull and majestic sounds provide the composition a fascinating view of this 6th continent.'Antarctica' is a free impression of the scenery in the Antarctic.Melodies are linked together to convey the various aspects of the landscape.These melodies together with their simple harmonic accompaniments make this work pleasant for both the listener and the musician. Carl Wittrock liet zich inspireren door de grote ijsvlakte om en nabij de Zuidpool.Schilderachtige en majestueuze klanken geven deze compositie een fascinerend beeld van dit '6e'werelddeel. Antarctica is een vrije,muzikale impressievan de spectaculaire gezichten van op de Zuidpool. Melodieën zijn aan elkaar verbonden om zo de verschillende aspecten van het landschap over te brengen. Samen met eenvoudige harmonische begeleidingen is dit werk een genotvoor zowel luisteraar als muzikant.

The source of inspiration for Thailand Impressions was a trip that the composer made to the magnificent country of Thailand. The three movements reflect the many different aspects of this fascinating part of the world including Bangkok - both modern and antique, Buddhist temples and the infamous Burma railway. Een reis door Thailand brengt ons eerst naar het oude en moderne Bangkok. In deel twee komt het ondoorgrondelijke en menslievende gedachtegoed van het boeddhisme aan bod. De Birma-spoorlijn is het onderwerp van het derde deel. Dezewerd aangelegd door duizenden dwangarbeiders, de ‘treinmuziek’ wordt dan ook twee keer onderbroken door het koraal Aus tiefer Not. Een mooi werk over een veelzijdig land met een rijke geschiedenis.Die Inspirationsquelle zu Thailand Impressions war eine Reise des Komponisten in dieses herrliche Land. In drei Sätzen nimmt die Musik den Hörer mit auf eine Reise durch das alte und neue Bangkok, zu einer Zeremonie in einem Buddha-Tempel und entlang einer historischen Bahnlinie. Lassen Sie sich von Thailand Impressions in ein modernes, geheimnisvolles und exotisches Land entführen! Kees Schoonenbeek s’est inspiré d’un voyage en Tha lande pour la composition de ce triptyque. Le premier tableau est consacré Bangkok, ville agitée et mystérieuse où l’ancien et le moderne demeurent côte côte. Le second tableau, plus mystique, dépeint l’insondable mystère et la conception humanitariste des croyances bouddhiques. Le troisième tableau suit la ligne de chemin de fer qui mène vers la frontière du Myanmar via le Col des Trois Pagodes. Des milliers de prisonniers de guerre et de travailleurs forcés périrent dans la construction de cette ligne de fret.

Now, Carl Wittrock (who also composed the world-famous master piece 'Lord Tullamore') invites you to join him in a musical exploration of the animal kingdom. An invitation you must not reject! In his 'A view at the Zoo', Wittrock presents ten distinctly different animals as compositions of music. You may be familiar with some of those animals, such as the white swan or the butterfly, but there are also more exotic breeds, like the lion, the monkey, or theelephant. The composition as a whole is built around a structure of shorter fragments reminiscent of 'The Paintings Exhibition' by Moussorgsky. The parts are decorated with recognizable illustrations of the different animals. At each composition, Wittrock looks for something that can fascinate both musicians and listeners. In this he succeeded extremely well. De dierentuin. iedereen is er wel eens geweest! Al die verschillende dieren, groot en klein, gevaarlijk en ongevaarlijk, in het water, in de lucht of gewoon op het droge, en allemaal met hun eigen bijzonderheden. Carl Wittrock(componist van o.a. het wereldberoemde ‘Lord Tullamore’) neemt je in ‘A View at the Zoo’ mee op een muzikale ontdekkingstocht door het dierenrijk die je absoluut niet mag missen. In totaal komen we gedurende deze wandeling10 compleet verschillende dieren tegen. Naast de dieren die je niet zomaar op straat tegenkomt, zoals de leeuw, de aap en de olifant, is er ook aandacht voor dieren waar we misschien al iets beter bekend mee zijn, zoals de zwaanen de vlinder. De compositie bestaat uit korte deeltjes die qua opzet doen denken aan ‘De Schilderijententoonstelling’ van Moussorgsky. De partijen zijn versierd met herkenbare illustraties van de verschillende dieren.Wittrock zoekt bij elke compositie naar iets wat zowel de musici als de luisteraars kan boeien en dat is bijzonder goed gelukt!
