“Elutropia is a Gemme, in colour greene, or grassie, in part coloured and bespotted with Purple speckes & bloud coloures vaines. This is a marvellous Jugler, for it will cause things object to be presented to our eies as it listeth. It being put into a Basan of water chaungeth to a mans eyesight the Sunne his beames, and giveth them a contrarie colour. Being also moved and beaten in the ayre maketh to appeare a bloudie Sunne, and darkneth the ayre in the maner of an Eclipse: and therfore it is called Eloutropia as you would say, the Sunne his enimie. There is of this name also a certain Hearbe which Enchaunters & Witches have oftentimes used and doe use, as also that above said, whereby they have mocked and deluded many, which by meanes and working and enchauntment, have so dazzled the beholders eies, that they have gone by them invisibly.†John Maplet (died 1592) A greene forest, or A natural historie 1567 This text from the clergyman, astrologer and natural historian John Maplet's fascinating work in which he describes the properties of various gemstones is the inspiration for this piece. Without being programmatic, the music is constantly developed to try and mimic the way the shafts of light mutate through the gem, and the illusions and magic they create.

The theme of this work is man & machine, as commissioned by Michael Nicolas. The theme is represented in that the Cellist becomes both in the piece man & machine where man indicates performing expressively with emotion, and a musical approach to the music, and machine indicates more precise rhythmic and technical accuracy, a somewhat stricter approach to the music. These two approaches gradually transition from one to another throughout the work. Anna Thorvaldsdottir frequently works with large sonic structures that tend to reveal the presence of a vast variety of sustained sound materials, reflecting her sense of imaginative listening to landscapes and nature. Her music tends to portray a flowing world of sounds with an enigmatic lyrical atmosphere.

The serenade flourished in Mozart's era, but with Brahms the genre experienced a new surge in popularity in the 19th century. Dvorák's cheerful and relaxed op. 22 came into being in 1875, during a very happy time for him both professionally and privately. Heput his personal stamp on the five-movement composition by incorporating stylized Slavonic dances. The spirited finale captivates by restating themes from the previous movements. Since its premiere in 1876 the work, with its melodic richness and particular harmonic modulations, has enjoyed great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Today it is among Dvorák's most popular and most frequently performed compositions. As well as the autograph and printed editions, the composer's copy of the printed score with autograph corrections and additions has been consulted for Henle's Urtext edition.

The Cello Skole is a long starting Cello method from the 1960s but one that still has much merit. It has brought much success for over a quarter of a century helping improve the intonation and technique of young players. This elementary level teaches everything from holding the instrument and playing first notes to repertoire pieces and performance definitions. The theory level is kept to a minimum and elements are taught in a straightforward way while the selection of repertoire pieces are varied and interesting to keep beginners interested. Volume One of this Danish and Norwegian language Cello Tutor will help give a basic understanding of theory and technique and will improve your level from just starting to play first pieces. This item is also of note for those with an interest in historical tutors.
