In addition to musicals and film music Irving Berlin (1888-1989), an American composer with a Russian background, wrote hundreds of songs, many of which are still performed. The legendary White Christmas has been sung by many famous artists,including Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole and Clark Gable. This widely known Christmas song has been tastefully arranged by Naohiro Iwai and will make an ideal closing item for any Christmas concert.

The phenomenal success of the singer Nat King Cole, eclipsed the talent of the jazz pianist to a legacy that remains a jazz master and model. For all of us, there remains his own unique interpretations of such classic songs as Sweet Lorraine, Mona Lisa, Embraceable You, Besame Mucho and, of course, Unforgettable, which was re-released many years after his death by his daughter, Natalie Cole. With more than 60 million discs sold, Nat King Cole was one of the first black American artists to attain such international notoriety. His clear and distinguished voice allowed for him to become a renowed crooner to his legions of loyal fans.

Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (“That’s An Irish Lullaby” ) was written in 1913 by composer James Royce Shannon (1881–1946) for the Tin Pan Alley musical, Shameen Dhu. The original recording by Chauncy Olcott became No. 1 on the music charts. The song was then brought back to prominence by Bing Crosby’s performance in the film Going My Way (1944). Crosby’s solo sold over one million copies.The University of Notre Dame Band, started in 1845, is the oldest college band (in continuous existence) in the United States. The band played as students left to join the armies during the Civil War, World War 1 and 2, Korea and Vietnam. In 1871, the band played a benefit concert for the victims of the Great Chicago Fire. The bands performances in countless settings and venues include the Sydney Opera House, Bejing Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and, in 2011, was awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy, considered the “Heisman Trophy” of Collegiate bands.The Bands Director, Ken Dye, is only the sixth director in its long history. Dr. Dye served as composer/arranger for the Sydney 2000 Olympic band, and has produced over 1800 works for band and orchestra.

Cole Porter was one of the great masters of Broadway musicals during the thirties, forties and fifties, with So in Love, from the musical Kiss Me Kate, being one of his best loved works. It has been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Lulu, Shirley Bassey and Julie Andrews, however it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that is best known. Le mariage est heureux en dépit de lâ??homosexualité notoire de Cole Porter. En 1937, il est victime dâ??un grave accident qui le laisse handicapé vie. Cole Porter restera meurtri par cette expérience. Son épouse meurt en 1954. Quatre ans plus tard, il est amputé de la jambe droite. Son appétit de vivre et saflamme créatrice sâ??éteignent. Il meurt en 1964.Cole Porter a composé de superbes chansons et comédies musicales dont certaines sont encore très appréciées de nos jours.
