For Percussion duo (not the concerto of the same title).
What determines the special character of a piece of music written for percussion instruments is the very choice of sets of instruments. InUdacrepAkubrad, I have chosen a similar set of instruments for each of the players: a marimba, two Darbuka, and a tom-tom. This piece draws its inspiration from the “Eastern†music, extending the boundaries of theregion as faras the Indian sub-continent. The main source materials in this piece are scales and the rhythms emanating from the traditional classical music of the peoples of the Mediterranean; and repetitive minimalism, from themusictradition of the Middle East, as well as the recently developed techniques in western music. — Avner Dorman

Detroit, for several decades, was a city where I received many important composing and performance opportunities in the early and middle part of my career. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra even commissioned my second symphony. My cantata DONE MADE MY VOW has been performed there more times than any place else. The chorus for those performances was always the outstanding BRAZEAL DENNARD CHORALE. He loved his city and was a great mentor to me. The final movement of this quintet is dedicated to his memory.

With an original text by the composer, Nkeiru Okoye’s WE MET AT THE SYMPHONY is a monodrama in three songs for soprano and string quartet or piano. The songs tell the story of a Black woman surprised to find a Black man in the sea of white faces at an orchestra concert, their subsequent romance, and her struggle to trust another Black man after betrayal and heartbreak. Okoye’s poignant, insightful, and sharp-witted poetry is set to dramatic and striking music that blends sensibilities from jazz, Broadway, and contemporary classical styles, with an unforgettable solo role for the soprano.

Lament for Trombone and Organ by composer Jeremy Niles Kempton is a serious and lyrical work of about 6 minutes in length for advanced performers. The original version is for trombone and string orchestra. It was composed and performed within a 2 week period at a memorial concert given for Helen Manheim, a violist in Mr. Kempton's Island Chamber Symphony on Long Island, NY. Ms Manheim died rather suddenly and her passing left the composer with a deep feeling of regret at having taken her and so many other ICS musicians for granted. The piece consists of 3 lengthy phrases. The first epitomizes the grief at her passing. The 2nd presents her life and consists of 3 phrases, all starting the same but each striving higher. The final section is her legacy, what she leaves behind. Orchestral score and parts are available form Cherry Classics. The live performance features Mr. Kempton on the trombone.

Luonnonjumala (God of Nature) is Tauno Marttinen’s adaption for harp of his piano suite Taara op. 34. The manuscript for harp was found in January 2024 by Rauno Marttinen, composer’s son.Duration: c. 15’Movements:1. Virran ääniä | The Voices of the Stream2. Luonnonjumalan lähde | The Spring of God of Nature3. Metsässä tuulee |The Wind Blows through the ForestTauno Marttinen (1912–2008) studied in Viipuri and later in Helsinki at the Helsinki Conservatoire. His piano teachers were Ilmari Hannikainen and Selim Palmgren, but he soon became increasingly interested in composing. Marttinen was also the conductor of the Hämeenlinna City Orchestra in 1949−1958 and the founder and principal of the Hämeenlinna Music Institute.Marttinen started his composing career in late Romantic vein. However, his first concerts in the 1940s met with criticism since the winds of Modernism had already landed in Finland. He then became interested in Dodecaphony and studied under Vladimir Vogel in Ascona but later abandoned strict dodecaphony and found his own, personal style incorporating elements from Neo-classicism and free-tonality with a hint of mysticism – he was called the Shaman of Hämeenlinna (his hometown).Tauno Marttinen was an incredibly productive composer; he wrote around four hundred works with opus numbers as well as a wealth of other pieces. His oeuvre includes 10 symphonies, concertos for various solo instruments, operas as well as vocal, chamber and instrumental works. Many of Marttinen’s pieces have become popular standard repertoire, such as the piano piece Kimalluksia (Gleams).

With the Missa Sancti Amandi, composed in 1776, Michael Haydn created a festive mass in pieno, i.e. scored for choir and orchestra without vocal soloists. Although richly worked, this composition possesses a remarkable transparency of effect akin to chamber music. Score available separately - see item CA.5422900.

The publishers Henle and Breitkopf & Hartel are continuing their collaboration, now with Brahms, by publishing the performance material of the double concerto. Brahms's last work with orchestra was published in the new Brahms Complete Edition in 2002, whereby the editor was able to base himself on newly accessible sources. Of particular interest are the additional performance instructions for the solo violin and solo cello, which were gathered from the first edition of the solo parts. These indications were supplied by the soloists of the first performance, Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann. No doubt authorized by Brahms, they communicate valuable insights into the performance practice of the time. The new material also contains a part in which the solo violin and cello are notated one above the other. The trio edition for violin, violoncello and piano (EB 6040), which was made by Brahms himself, has proven itself for chamber performances; it continues to be available. The full score is a conductor's dream: big, bold, and beautifully laid out on glare-free bluff paper. Gary Schocker’s THREE DANCES FOR TWO FLUTES has long been a staple of the flute repertoire – in its original voicing with piano, as well as in transcriptions with string orchestra or band accompaniment, for alto saxophone duo with piano, and even in the composer’s flute quartet version of the famous Coffee Nerves movement. Schocker has arranged THREE DANCES for one solo flute with piano, incorporating all of the original work’s counterpoint, beauty, and spice, into this practical and concise instrumentation.
