Written in memory of Peter Crossley-Holland, a former colleague at the BBC where Sir John Manduell was founding the BBC Music Programme, this superb duet was given a first performance by Richard Howarth (Violin) and Tom Dunn (Viola) at the Bridgewater Hall in August 2002.While a short piece, there is plenty of technical challenge in this work, with the Recitative spanning the full range octaves leading on to an Aria in 11/8, featuring muted, pizzicato, double stopping and harmonic passages.

The conductor Frieder Bernius regards the motets of Hans Fahrmann as an indispensable and extremely welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire. The composer's output is little known nowadays. Born in 1860, he was considered the Richard Strauss of the organ during his lifetime. With their demanding harmonies, Fahrmann's choral motets place high demands on choirs and - like Reger's works - stretch tonality to its extremes. And not least, their sonorous expressivity is thanks to their chromatic richness. Frieder Bernius has recorded the Motets opp. 34, 45, and 65 with the SWR Vokalensemble for the first time on CD (Carus 83.499).

The three grands motets, Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed from 1713 to 1715 are still relatively unknown today. Yet these masterworks can stand comparison to the best works of Michel-Richard de Lalande. They are testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have survived only in later sources which originated in about 1770, after Rameau's death, and the works have been rendered in a scoring which does not correspond to his intentions. The present new edition attempts for the first time to reconstruct them as closely as possible to their original form. The edition of In convertendo is based on Rameau's autograph score from 1751. Score available separately - see item CA.2100700.

Experience the brutal energy of the Roman Colosseum in this larger-than-life work by Timothy Loest. Heart-pounding drums and sword-clashing sound effects tell the heroic story of St. Telemachus, a frail monk whose bravery brought the gladiatorial games to an end. Exhilarating and epic, The Last Gladiator will absolutely be a student and audience favorite! (1:00).

In his roles as Music Director at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and in the Royal Choir [chapel] of Louis XV, Andre Campra (1660-1744) composed numerous motets which frequently displayed the influence of contemporary opera. If today Campra is known almost exclusively for his famous Requiem, nevertheless his more than forty motets composed for soli, choir and orchestra are still awaiting discovery. Among these is a setting of Psalm 129, De profundis, published here in a new critical edition after the autograph score. The work was composed in 1723 during the first months of Campra's service to the French king and it proves to be the equal to the compositions of Michel-Richard de Lalande, who during his lifetime shaped and dominated the genre of the Grand Motet.. Score available separately - see item CA.2103000.
