Pfarreimusik Wunnewil-Flamatt requested a new work to be commissioned for the celebration of its 111th anniversary. They asked the composer to create a piece lasting approximately 11 minutes and 11 seconds. The band asked Jan Van der Roost to reflect on a number of aspects from the past, as well as the current state of affairs. The piece contains lyrical movements, cheerful and jubilant parts, as well as light introverted sequences. Fantasia Helvetica is a varied concert piece with a number of challenging passages, but is also fun to play! (Grade 4) Dur: 11:10 (De Haske).

'Romance for violin and piano is a short, reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist, Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing, numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece, the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.' - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981, Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. Battlefront is a cinematic composition for the developing concert band. The music is bold and rhythmic throughout but also contains contrasting lyrical sections that allow for valuable teaching moments. The prominent use of the lower voices in the melodic passages is a perfect opportunity for them to take the lead while showing the high voices how to accompany, strengthening your ensemble's unity and awareness.

A mass setting by Robert Schumann? This is still likely to cause surprise among audiences â after all, Schumann is not generally viewed as a sacred composer. Indeed, his little-known late work, the Missa sacra, Op. 147, is a discovery not just for listeners but often for the performers themselves. The mass combines an acute fascination with sacred liturgy typical of Schumannâs time with the pragmatism of its intended use by a local choral society. The composer employs his considerable skills to create a captivating and varied score that is almost ethereal in the Kyrie, leading to passages of an intimate and lyrical piano that alternate with fortissimo for words of praise, while always displaying the utmost sensitivity and a delight in dissonance. The composer declared his setting to be âfashioned with great loveâ. The demanding orchestral mass can be realized with limited means. The solo parts can be filled from the choir. The work, which the composer himself did not have published, is here reissued on the basis of Schumannâs partial autograph score. Carus has also produced an arrangement of the work for choir and organ, enabling performances without orchestra in smaller venues (Carus 40.687/45).. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4068700.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante†in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

Mathias' third and final quartet was commissioned by the 1986 Harrogate International Festival and premiered there in August that year by the Medici Quartet. It has three movements: the first takes the form of a sonata, the second starts off as mysterious and lyrical and moves into a fiery climax, and the third uses exciting fugal passages and 'scherzando' sections, which make for a thrilling conclusion.

Mozart wrote the Missa brevis in B flat major K. 275 in 1777. In keeping with the tradition of the genre, the movements are short and succinct. Mozart sometimes even further compresses the work by having different textual passages sung simultaneously. The orchestral scoring is also accordingly concentrated. Alfred Einstein described the expressive content of the mass as intimate, lyrical, almost private and characterized it on the other hand as a work full of delicacy and conspicuous polyphony and, above all, of chromatic agitation and boldness. The autograph of the work is no longer extant. Franz Beyer's Urtext edition is based on one of the most important sources of this work.

A salute to the famous sailboat race, this rollicking piece in A minor introduces compound time with an opening (and closing) section in 12/8. The fast flowing music of the opening, vividly suggestive of a ship slicing through the waves, returns in a higher key (B minor) after a warmly scored, sweepingly melodic middle section. This is a piece whose sophistication is an excellent showcase for a more advanced performing group.Written in 12/8 in A minor, America’s Cup evokes the intensity and momentum of a wild sea with driving triplets, sweeping melodies, and accented downbeats. The A-material from the opening measure is played aggressively but lightly enough to keep the feeling of forward motion. Strong accents and rhythmically precise playing in the cello and bass provide solid support for the fast moving violin and viola passages. Measure 67 begins the slow, pastoral setting of the B-material. A gentle, lyrical violin motive in A major grows into a high, sweeping melody over sustained harmonies. This provides a brief repose before returning to the fastoriginal tempo and minor key as the recapitulation begins at m. 90. A modulation to B minor (m. 94) lifts the energy of the piece and gives young players the challenge of playing the running lines in another key. Measure 118 builds to the end, keeping the intensity a soft dynamic and growing into the final syncopated tutti unison figure in mm. 122–123.

Debussy's friendship with the versatile poet and playwright Gabriel Mourey began in 1899, and in July 1907 Mourey offered Debussy a libretto based on Le roman de Tristan - Joseph Bedier's adaptation of a twelfth-century Breton romance by the Anglo-Norman poet known as Thomas - which had recently been published in Paris. Debussy enthusiastically outlined the four-act plot to Victor Segalen that October, and the main differences from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde are that none of the action takes place in Cornwall and that Isolde of the White Hands is found guilty of cuckolding King Marc with Tristan, who has to rescue her from the leper colony in which she is abandoned in Act 1. She also betrays him when he goes mad at the end.The idea of a Tristan that restored its 'legendary character' and had no connections with Wagner, appealed to Debussy, who was extremely moved by the circumstances of Tristan's death. Even if he thought that Mourey's poetry was 'not very lyrical and many passages do not exactly invite music', he did work on the libretto and the music that summer and sent his publisher, Jacques Durand, 'one of the 363 themes for the Roman de Tristan' in a letter sent from Pourville on 23 August, 1907. The present prelude grows from this theme, together with the poignant Breton folksong Le Faucon. After a short atmospheric introduction, Debussy's dance-like theme (which is definitely not a leitmotif) gradually gains momentum and after it reaches its ecstatic climax, representing the transient happiness of the lovers, it dissolves into an expressive coda and an elegiac close (all growing from Debussy's opening, off-stage trumpet calls), leaving us with the ultimate tragedy of their ill-fated affair.Unfortunately, Mourey's actual libretto has been lost and the project eventually foundered because Bedier's cousin, Louis Artus, wanted Debussy to use the scenario he had prepared and copyrighted for the stage, and would not allow him to proceed with Mourey's version. Debussy, it need hardly be said, would never have dreamed of collaborating with the author of the vaudeville hit La culotte (The pants)!

Schumann's horn sonatas were composed in 1936/37. Considering the slim repertoire offered horn players from this period, it is more than surprising that these two masterpieces could have slumbered for so long. Both sonatas are similar in structure, with op. 118 being one Schumann's few three-movement sonatas. The first movements of the pieces sparkle with melancholically lyrical melodies, whereas passages strongly marked rhythmically, variously shape the two outer movements. Virtuoso moments can be found, respectively, in the final movements, bringing the works to a brilliant close. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional outbursts up to the notated a flat'' are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds, the possibilities on the early valve horn as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann's mature compositional art.Schumann's horn sonatas are a crucial enhancement to each horn player's repertoire.
