The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Where sections are missing in Jommelli's composition, the Appendix contains settings by another composer from his circle, Nicola Sala. * The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart * First critical edition * Effective choral movements with numerous suspended dissonances and solo/tutti alternation * Scored for small instrumental forces of strings and organ.

The Vienna Musicians' Society, a pension fund for the widows and orphans of professional musicians, asked Mozart, among others, to compose a choral work for performance at their benefit concert series. Presumably it was due not just to the pressure of a deadline, but also for the chance to have the music of the torso of the great C minor Mass, K. 427, performed in Vienna that he chose to arrange this composition for the Society as the cantata Davide penitente (The Mass was originally written for a performance in Salzburg in 1783). Thus, Mozart set the Kyrie and Gloria with a sacred text in Italian in the style of penitential prayers. The text was suited for Lent, which occurred at the time of the benefit concert. He also added one newly-composed aria for tenor and one aria for soprano. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5146900.

In Cherubini's complete oeuvre and in musical classicism the Credo a 8 occupies an absolutely exceptional place. It represents the summa summarum of Italian vocal polyphony since Palestrina, employing the rich harmonic means of the early 19th century, and at the same time is Cherubini's masterpiece. For chamber choirs in search of new horizons the work is an exciting discovery.

It was no doubt this work that Mozart presented to Baron van Swieten when he later sought to introduce himself to the Viennese musical world as a composer of church music in the serious stile antico. This new edition by the Mozart expert Ulrich Konrad is based on the autograph and on authentic part material from the estate of Leopold Mozart.Mozart wrote the Vesperae solennes de Dominica in Salzburg in 1779, the same year as the Coronation Mass - a work, which the composer himself held in high esteem.

A collaborative effort by four composers with close ties to the late Roger Wagner, who was a strong advocate and devotee of 16th century performance practices and Gergorian Chant. In particular, Roger was very fond of the Ave Maria, and was closely identified with this remarkable plainchant, which is the thematic basis for each movement of this mass. This publication also contains the Ave Maria plainchant in both Gregorian and modern notation.

Johann Adolf Hasse, Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Polish court in Dresden, composed the Requiem in C for the ceremonial exequies of the deceased Elector Frederic August II in November 1763 in the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. With this work, he composed a monument in music to his long-standing, generous employer, who was also King of Poland under the name August III: passionate choral movements, echoes of historic compositional styles, expressive vocal solos and arias undeniably revealing Hasse the opera composer, plus trumpets and timpani in the orchestra - all these are the ingredients of a royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnis. - First edition- Passionate choral movements of medium difficulty- Expressive vocal soli- Royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnisAdditional program suggestion: Miserere in C minor by Hasse (Carus 40.961).

Only the text and the last page of the autograph score of the Christmas Cantata “Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe†BWV 197.1 (197a) have survived, beginning with the end of the 2nd aria. This, along with the complete surviving 3rd aria are found in parody versions in the Wedding Cantata BWV 197 / BWV3 197.2, from which this cantata takes its BWV number. For a long time there has been a fascinating theory about the missing opening chorus: could this have been the parody source for the Gloria in the Mass in B minor? The musicologist and organist Pieter Dirksen has pursued this, creating a four-part choral version largely derived from corrections made in the autograph of the Mass in B minor. He has underlaid this with the text of the opening chorus (the German translation of the Gloria). What results is a convincing version of the Christmas Cantata – with one of Bach’s best-known choruses as the prominent opening chorus and plausible solutions for the other sections missing in the autograph.
