In a miscellaneous manuscript in the Este Music Collection belonging to the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, a new sonata for violin and basso continuo by Antonio Vivaldi has recently been identified. Although it has until now been attributed by default to the Bolognese Giuseppe Aldrovandini, by virtue of a heading written (but subsequently rubbed out) by the copyist of the manuscript on one of the pages of the violin part, this sonata has been recognized as an authentic composition by the Red Priest. This work - which can be placed chronologically no later than the middle of the 1710s - represents the most clear-cut example in Vivaldi's music of a “Sonate auf Concertenart”: more specifically, a kind of solo sonata for violin that the Red Priest could perform in order to show off his prowess on that instrument, as signalled by the presence of many passages featuring double stoppingor the use of the ultra-high register.

The composer wrote this basically pedagogical work intended for young pianists. Beginning with each of the seven pitches of the diatonic scale, with the individual pieces having feminine first names, he proposed the following: - to assign a role of equal importance to each hand; - to have the young pianists become accustomed to two voice counterpoint; - to characterize each piece by systematic use of one of the 7 intervals; - to train the ear to comprehend and accept certain dissonances created as the result of the counterpoint; - to liberate the students from the strict tonal system and by virtue of chromaticism, creating a richer sound universe. In order to allow a partial or complete performance of the work by pianists of all levels, the composer has avoided any written references as to specific tempi, expressions or phrasings. The teacher will have to choose a tempo adapted to the technical resources of individual students. For the expressions and phrasings, students can either chose to follow the dictates of their creative artistic imaginations or simply follow the dictates or suggestions of their teachers. All music is sound, but not all music is simple. Simplicity is a virtue, especially in the arts, a fact which becomes increasingly and inescapably obvious to me the older I get. In Sound and Simplicity four out of the sevenmovements are very simple (as in the absence of any structural and metric complexity) indeed, in fact the second movement Trance, a sustained chord, employs only four notes, but gradually presented over three octaves.

Hearing just one gifted voice sing an inspired piece of music can be a glorious, moving experience. Hearing it accompanied by musical instruments played by skillful musicians can be evenmore exciting. But...put together a group of exceptional Human Voices, joined in perfect harmony, skillfully arranged and executed, and a cappella music can take us to even greater heights of musical expression, soul-stirring emotion, and musical appreciation! The music in this book acts as a SPOTLIGHT illuminating the brilliance and exceptional qualities of the Human Voice, made even more brilliant and exceptional by virtue of the fact that these songs magnify and glorify God. SPOTLIGHT features a group of voices weaving a tapestry of sound and movement, textures and lyrics…spotlighting the Human Voice, yes, but even more significantly, spotlighting the One Who created those voices and gave us the gift of all music!Arranged by gifted arrangers Cliff Duren and David Wise (both of whom have their own special love of a cappella music!), SPOTLIGHT is both balanced and diverse in its content, including Hymns, Worship Songs, CCM Songs, Christmas and Patriotic Songs, being done in traditional a cappella styles and in the fresh, contemporary style of groups like Pentatonix.

A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated inthe ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. 'Klezmer' is a Yiddish termcombining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned bythe ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations.A Little Klezmer Suite werd geschreven in opdracht van de Rushton Park High School ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan van het blaasorkest van de school.
