Dotzauer was a trained musician who wrote an opera, symphonies, overtures, a Mass, concertos and chamber music. Of his extensive life-work the abundance of educational compositions has proved to be of lasting value in the first place. The idea to compile and publish a selection from his educational life-work that meets the demands of the time emerged at the end of the 19th century already. Of the several publications of this kind the work by Johannes Klingenberg has turned out to be the most successful.Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer war studierter Cellist und Komponist einer Oper, mehrerer Sinfonien, einer Messe und Kammermusik. Von seinem umfangreichen Werk sind aber vor allem seine pädagogischen Werke, darunter zwei Cello-Schulen und zahlreiche Etüden, heute noch sehr geschätzt. Schon im 19. Jahrhundert gab es Versuche, eine Auswahl davon zusammen zu fassen. Unter diesen hat sich die hier in vier Bänden vorliegende Ausgabe von Johannes Klingenberg am besten bewährt.

SYRINX, L. 129/CD 137 by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) is among the most famous works for solo flute and is considered to be an indispensable part of the flutist's repertoire. The first solo flute work of any significance since C.P.E. Bach's SONATA in A minor, written over 150 years prior, SYRINX is also credited with reinvigorating the flute as a solo instrument, a trend that continues still. Written as part of the incidental music to Gabriel Mourey's play PSYCHÉ, the short work was originally entitled FLÛTE DE PAN, and it is thought that it was intended to be played off-stage by the dedicatee, famous French flutist Louis Fleury. British composer Philip Sparke was asked to write this arrangement of Hymn to Frei for the Norwegian Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk . Sparke had already used part of this hymn by a composer well-known in the home region of the band in The Saga of Haakon the Good. In A Norwegian Hymn, three verses of the tune can be heard: the first is performed by various soloists, followed by a quieter second verse, before the third verse brings the piece to a triumphal close. A beautiful piece, which is also excellent to use to work on musicality with bands in lower divisions.Philip Sparke arrangeerde Hymne to Frei voor de Noorse Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk. In A Norwegian Hymn zijn ook drie verzen uit zijn eerdere werk The Saga of Haakon the Good te horen. De eerste wordt uitgevoerd door diverse solisten, gevolgd door een rustiger tweede couplet. Het derde deel brengt het werk naar een triomfantelijk einde. Een mooi werk waarmee u uitstekend kunt werken aan de muzikaliteit van orkesten in de lagere divisies. Le compositeur britannique Philip Sparke fut commandé d’écrire cet arrangement de Hymn to Frei pour la fanfare norvégienne Frei Hornmusikk. Sparke avait déj intégré une partie de ce cantique, écrit par un compositeur connu dans la région natale de cette fanfare, dans « The Saga of Haakon the Good ». On peut entendre trois couplets de la mélodie dans A Norwegian Hymn : le premier joué par plusieurs solistes, suivi par le deuxième qui est plus tranquille, avant que le troisième ne conclue la pièce d’une façon triomphante. Un morceau magnifique qui est aussi idéal pour travailler sur la musicalité des ensembles des divisions inférieures.

The fourth violoncello volume of the series Music for Beginners offers beginners who wish to get acquainted with camber music as well, a selection from the music literature of more than two centuries, starting from the late 17th century to the early 20th century. It contains both demanding polyphonic works and popular melodic pieces. The easier pieces included in the volume can already be performed after two or three years of serious studies. Dediche is a series of short miniature pieces for solo guitar written in 1991 by Chiara Benati, an authoritative exponent of what can be called the School of Bologna, and who has devoted many pages of her catalogue to the guitar (Chiara won a first prize in 1986 at the Competition for Guitar Composition organized by the historic magazine Il Fronimo).From the point of view of the guitar idiom, it is striking how the compositional research of Chiara Benati (who does not play the guitar) has penetrated deeply into the nature of the instrument. In my job of adding the fingering to the pieces, I started from the precise indications concerning the strings already provided by the Composer, who meticulously imagined the instrumental result created by the play of resonances and the consequent precise distribution of the parts on different strings (let us think of the tremolos superimposed on different strings in the second Dedica and the counterpoint in three parts each written on its own musical stave), with a skilful use of glissandos and other instrumental effects.From the musical point of view, a similar meticulousness in writing is evident, shown, for example, by indicating the temporal separation between the figures by means of their spatial distance indicated in the score.The result is an instrumentally and musically rigorous writing which also helps the performer by appealing to his ability to empathize, following the indications written in the score and in the key, with the expressive atmosphere of the work, and through that specific aspect of controlled performance flexibility and sound sensitivity necessary to render it properly.These delicate miniatures, suffused with mystery and melancholy, and so masterfully written for the guitar, are in my opinion an important addition to the contemporary repertoire of the instrument.
