PULSO DE LA VIDA was composed as part of my dear friend Kostas Tosidis' doctoral thesis with the title Bowing technique on the guitar.The character of the piece changes from simple and meditative to rhythmic and tension-filled, reflecting different stages of our lives.Using a C, G, D tuning for the bass strings, the guitar utilizes resonance to create sustained, cello-sounding melodies on the fourth string, complemented by harmonies on the fifth and sixth strings.The bowing technique is introduced with a continuous tremolo accompanied by an extended form of the first theme. The more dancelike and rhythmical part of the piece uses a 19/16 measure that allows us to experience a sense of disparity. Finally, the simplicity combined with a sense of completeness, but also of abandonment of the beautiful gift of life, leaves us in a state of stillness for any kind of introspection.PULSO DE LA VIDA a été composé dans le cadre de la recherche doctorale de mon cher ami Kostas Tosidis, sous le titre Bowing technique on the guitar (technique d'archet àla guitare).Le caractère de la pièce passe de simple et méditatif àrythmique et plein de tension, reflétant les différentes étapes de notre vie.La guitare, dont les cordes basses sont accordées en do, sol et ré, utilise la résonance pour créer des mélodies soutenues au son du violoncelle sur la quatrième corde, complétées par des harmonies sur les cinquième et sixième cordes.La technique d'archet est introduite par un trémolo continu accompagné d'une forme étendue du premier thème. La partie plus dansante et rythmique de la pièce utilise une mesure 19/16 qui nous permet d'éprouver un sentiment de disparité. Enfin, la simplicité combinée àun sentiment de plénitude, mais aussi d'abandon du magnifique cadeau qu'est la vie, nous laisse dans un état de tranquillité propice àtoute forme d'introspection.

The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. Soft harmonics, tranquil arching melodies, a leisurely rhythmical pulse and a coherence of mood are in evidence in his later works as in Uurre (1997) for chamber ensemble, Miniatures (1997) for string quartet and Circles within for 19 solo strings.

'Per Piero' and 'Per Maurizio' are among the most recent pieces written for solo guitar by Gilberto Cappelli.The first piece, written in 2006, represents a surprise present for my fiftieth birthday: it was written after a request of a pupil of mine, Alessandra Lucchi, who performed it as a premiere during my birthday party.The second piece (2009) expresses the composer’s participation for the pain caused by the sudden death of Maurizio Biasini, scientist and guitarist who completed his musical studies at Cesena Conservatory where Gilberto Cappelli was in the Board of Examiners. The piece was premiered at a concert in memory of Maurizio held in the Bonci Theatre in Cesena.The use of a particular tremolo effect is a typical characteristic of all the guitar works of this composer; a tremolo which is very different from the traditional one. The performer is asked to produce – as much as possible – a long and continuous sound, as if it were a voice or the long sound of string or wind instruments. The tremolo will have to be very dense and homogeneous. In the case of a tremolo on two or three strings it is necessary to start playing two or three sounds simultaneously only once and then continuing alternating them – but always tending to achieve a homogeneity of sound. We proudly present this new modern critical edition of Antoine de Lhoyer's Six Exercices Op. 27, originally published in Paris around 1812. These exercises, originally written for 5-string guitar, are remarkably advanced for their time and well worth playing; the rapid arpeggio patterns and daring harmonic shifts in some of them may bring even Villa-Lobos to mind. The Six Exercices Op. 27 were arranged by Giuliani and published some 7 years later under his name as Six Preludes Op. 83. The exercises were originally written for 5-string guitar. We have added alternative readings for using the 6th string, an often employed publishing practice of the period. The music is edited and fingered by Erik Stenstadvold, an authority on the guitar repertoire of the early 19th century. There is also an informative preface, with full biographical details and critical notes.
