The second volume continues with 43 compositions for the time of Holy Lent and Easter. For this time of year the new hymnal Gotteslob contains a great number of new songs. Therefore more than 20 pieces are commissioned renditions for this edition - for many songs they are even the first chorale arrangements overall. The collection presents some previously unknown pieces between baroque and present times. The pieces are quite easy to learn and take between two and five minutes playing time and are particularly suitable for the recessional and for the communion.

The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach's authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes' text sections. The situation of the chorale partitas is not quite so dramatic, whereby these holdings also had to be subdivided for reasons of transmission into main section, appendix, and online presentation. The so called ,,Neumeister-Chorale are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ,,Neumeister-Sammlung should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. Breitkopf has given the world a splendid edition of the organ works of Bach. These final two volumes offer a wealth of chorale-based music benefiting from the very latest research. Aside from the edition's obvious scholarly merit, a practicing church organist will love the convenience and variety of these volumes. Recommended without hesitation.(Jonathan B. Hall, The American Organist).

Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

New music on old instruments and new organ literature in dialogue with historical Iberian works. The present edition contains a collection of works, composed for an authentically rebuilt historical Spanish organ and covering a wide range of styles, which adds new sounds to the purely Baroque repertoire. With works by Jose Blasco de Nebra, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Antonio de Cabezon, Pedro de Araujo, Antonio de Cabezon and new compositions by Guy Bovet, Michael Kapsner, Pavel Klimashevsky, Zsigmond Szathmary and Alfred Muller-Kranich. The new Spanish organ of the Hochschule fur Musik Mainz as an authentically rebuilt historical instrument from the workshop of the organ builder Joaquin Lois from Tordesillas in Castile shall both adequately reproduce early music and be a source of inspiration for contemporary music. For this reason, the Hochschule fur Musik Mainz commissioned five composers to write modern compositions according to the motto 'Early music in dialogue with New Music' which are a valuable addition to the repertoire of historical instruments of the 'Siglo de Oro'. Certain specifications had to be taken into account: e. g. a limited pitch range, half stops for treble and bass registers, the short octave as well as a mean-tone temperament. In addition, each composition is based on a work of the Iberian organ literature; sometimes, the work found its way into the new composition, sometimes, it only served as an inspiration. The pieces can also be played on a modern organ, although there is a special charm in playing and hearing them played on an appropriate historical instrument. Encompassing a broad range of styles, the resulting collection adds new sounds to the purely Baroque repertoire.

Heinrich Schutz's Osterdialog (Dialogo per la Pascua) SWV 443 for four voices and basso continuo is based on an episode from the Gospel of St John, in which the risen Jesus appears before Mary Magdalene in front of the empty grave. Schutz had also composed a setting of this scene shortly before in 1623 in his Auferstehungshistorie [Resurrection History]. For the first time this edition contains an attempt to reconstruct the extensive final chorus of the work, which is missing except for the basso continuo part, by Helmut Lauterwasser. This musical jewel by Schutz represents a valuable addition to the musical repertoire for Easter, which is smaller than the Passiontide repertoire. 20.443/05: full score without cover and without final chorus 20.443/06: choral score, only final chorus. Score available separately - see item CA.2044300.
