Alexander Scriabin's music has been described as mystical, lyrical and idiosyncratic. He was a most innovative and controversial early modern Russian composer. His works were ignored for many years until recently and are now seen as sincere expression(s) of genius.
The Three Etudes for Trombone and Piano are early works of Scriabin, originally written for solo Piano. They show lyricism, passion, moodiness, chromatic harmonies and great expression.
Mr. Sauer has once again brought three wonderful new works for advanced performers who wish to explore this area, largely unknown to the Trombone world. Those who do will be richly rewarded with the depth of musicanship found in these works.

Gliere's beautiful character pieces, Six Album Leaves from Op. 51 are from a larger collection of twelve originally written for Cello and Piano in 1911 while the composer was living in Berlin. The composer most likely was inspired by Schumann's versions which were unknown in Russia. The pieces are full of eastern sounding melodies and exploit the singing nature of the Trombone. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly arranged six of these for advanced performers.

I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. Young Glazunov had the special opportunity to meet Franz Liszt in 1884 while on a tour of Europe arranged by his publisher. Liszt was very impressed with the young Glazunov and arranged to have his 1st Symphony performed in Weimar. Upon hearing of Liszt's death in 1886, Glazunov wrote this Elegie in his memory with the subtitile Une Pensee a Francois Liszt.The music embodies emotions of nostalgia, sweet remembrance and grief. The Serenade and Impromptu by Leoncavallo have been artfully arranged for Trombone and Piano by Ralph Sauer. Tchaikovsky composed Souvenir d'un lieu cher Op. 42 in 1878 for Violin and Piano. Melodie is the third of three movements of this lovely work. Later, in 1884 the movements were published separately and eventually Glazunov arranged the three movements for Violin and orchestra.The music is poetic, expressive, joyous and refreshing with a wink or two. Professor Mixdorf has beautifully arranged this 3-minute work for advanced performers.

The Petite Suite, published in 1885, is Borodin's major work for the Piano and originally comprised of seven movements. Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Reverie and Serenade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite.
The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

Elegie, Op. 44 was composed in 1893 originally for Viola and Piano. It is thought to be a memorial for either Anton Rubinstein and/or Tchaikovsky, both of whom died the year before.The 6-minute work very nicely arranged by Dr. Cory Mixdorf is an Allegretto in 9/8 meter, poignantly lyrical, of somber mood and appropriate for advanced performers.
