Hymnus was commissioned by the Wilhelmina Easterein Fanfare Orchestra in the Autumn of 1999 for their performance at the World Music Contest, Kerkrade.

The commission was the result of a collaboration between the composer and the thenmusical director, Marten van der Wal.

The exact meaning of the word Hymnus is not known but it is taken in this presentation to mean hymn or hymn-like.
The melodic material is organic and grows from an initial unison tone. Thisinterval is gradually expanded to form the cell F E C F, a semitone, third, fifth. The only other melodic motif is the ascending three-note pattern spanning a major third. This is the second of his compositions to use this ascending motif, theother being Fanfare for a Bright New Age for Brass Band and Organ, also of 2000. These characteristic intervals appear in many contrasting moods and guises throughout the piece.

The opening unison notes are intended to convey as sense ofpower and magnificence, like the first sounds at the dawning of the universe.
After the immense power, a period of stunned silence and reverence. The evolution of the hymn melody incorporates a variety of moods and atmospheres, sometimes expressing much joy and celebration whilst also suggesting periods of intense savagery or prayerful contemplation.
The hymn builds as the piece progresses and is finally stated in its complete form at letter W.

The official worldpremiere of the work was given by Wilhelmina Easterein at the World Music Contest 2001. Whilst the composer was unable to attend in person, he was able to enjoy the premier simultaneously transmitted via a mobile phone from the audience!

Conductors Note
The tempo indications are to be viewed as a guide rather than a literal instruction. Within the music there is an innate sense of pulse and metre, lending itself to considerable rubato.
Melody is king, and all else is mere support and decoration, careful attention must therefore be given to balance.

Match-Rhythm was the compulsory work for the B-division during the European Brass Band Championships of 2005 taking place in Groningen.

It is a rhythmical (Rhythm) oriented opening work in which the bands have the opportunity to present themselves during the indisputable competitive character (Match) of these championships.
To achieve the high standard required is intensive preparation alone not sufficient.
The bands increase their level op performance during the customary try-out concerts so that a kind of competitive rhythm (Match) is acquired.

Match-Rhythm was het verplichte werk voor de B-divisie op het Europees Brassband Kampioenschap (EBK) van 2005 in Groningen.

Het is een ritmisch (Rhythm) getint openingswerk waarmee de bands zich kunnen profileren op dit kampioenschapdat ontegenzeggelijk een sterk wedstrijdkarakter (Match) heeft.
Om hier goed te kunnen presteren is een goede voorbereiding alleen niet voldoende.
De bands spelen zich in vorm op de traditionele try-out concertenzodat ze een soort van wedstrijdritme (Match-Rhythm) krijgen.

With this surprising little work, the composer not only intended to write a delightfully swinging composition. he also had an educational message up his sleeve. Especially as far as timing and rhytm are concerned there is plenty of action. Rhythm Forever might very well be an absolute showstopper on your next concert. The French composer Louis Bourgeois lived from c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois was cantor in Geneva and, commissioned by John Calvin, he composed melodies for metrical (rhyming) versions of the psalms. After completing about a hundred one-part psalms, he made some four-part arrangements, which were denounced and even resulted in his imprisonment for a day. Later, Bourgeois published a number of psalm collections, and judging from his book Le droict chemin de musique he was also an excellent educator. The melodies Bourgeois composed, are (contrary to Gregorian chants) particularly suitable for community singing. This applies to his hymn tune Saint Michael, which is why this melody hasbeen used for various texts, written for many occasions. John Blanken made this arrangement for a wedding ceremony: an occasion in which faith and trust play a large - if not the largest - role. Hence the title Hymn of Faith. The arrangement contains four verses of the hymn. After a majestic opening the hymn follows twice, the second verse being embellished in the tenor register. After a short interlude verse three follows, played by a quartet. The majestic opening is then repeated as a modulation into the fourth verse, which concludes the work in a brilliant tutti.

De melodieën van de France componist Louis Bourgeois (ca. 1510-1560) zijn heel geschikt voor volkszang - zo ook de hymne ST Michael. Niet voor niets is deze melodie gebruikt voor vele liedteksten voor uiteenlopende gelegenheden. JohnBlanken maakte dit arrangement voor een trouwdienst, een gelegenheid waarbij vertrouwen een grote rol speelt, vandaar de titelHymn of Faith. Het arrangement herbergt vier vrezen. Na een majestueuze opening volgt de hymnetwee keer, waarbij het tweede vers wordt omgespeeld in het tenorregister. Na een kort tussenspel volgt vers drie in een zetting voor kwartet. De opening wordt herhaald als modulatie naar het vierde vers, waarmee het werk in eenstralend tutti afsluit.

Der Komponist, Kantor und Pädagoge Louis Bourgeois lebte im 16. Jahrhundert in Genf und komponierte Psalm- und Kirchenliedmelodien, die sich besonders gut für den Gemeindegesang eigneten. Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. The final movement, Dundonnell, features two highly contrasting melodies, a wild presto and the bagpipe melody first heard in the first movement.

Musica Helvetica takes the form of a three-part concert work. The first part, Musica Prima, has a jazz flavour and is a brisk virtuoso opening. The following section, Musica Sacra, has a contrasting and beautiful main themcontaining extraordinarily colourful instrumentation. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the amazing variety of scenery in Switzerland.

In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Voor het concours van 2012 werd eenopdracht verstrekt aan Jan de Haan. De compositie kreeg Musica Helvetica als titel mee. Het gaat om een driedelig concertwerk waarvan de laatste twee delen onafgebroken in elkaar overgaan. Het eerste deel, Musica Prima,is een virtuoze en flitsende opening met hier en daar jazzy invloeden. In contrast daarmee staat het expressieve volgende deel, Musica Sacra, waarin het gedragen hoofdthema prachtig wordt uitgewerkt - de instrumentatieis hier buitengewoon kleurrijk. Het afsluitende deel, Musica Alpina, is ge nspireerd op het afwisselende landschap van Zwitserland. Het is grillig van structuur en vormt een waardige afsluiting van dit fraaie drieluik.

Im schweizerischen Wallberg wird jedes Jahr ein Wettbewerb für Blasorchester und Brass Bands ausgerichtet. Neben einer Hymne und einem Solowerk müssen alle Orchester ein Pfllichtstück spielen. Vor dem Wettbewerb im Jahr 2012 wurde der Auftrag zu diesem Pflichtstück an Jan de Haan vergeben. Die Komposition erhielt den Titel Musica Helvetica. Es handelt sich dabei um ein dreiteiliges Konzertwerk, dessen letzten zwei Teile direkt ineinander übergehen. Der erste Teil, Musica Prima, ist eine virtuose, flotte Eröffnung mit eingestreuten jazzigen Einflüssen. Einen Kontrast hierzu bildet der folgende Teil, Musica Sacra, worin das Hauptthema wunderschönausgearbeitet wird - die Instrumentierung ist hier außergewöhnlich farbig. Der letzte Teil, Musica Alpina, ist inspiriert vom abwechslungsreichen Landschaftsbild der Schweiz. Mit seiner launigen Struktur bildet er einen würdigen Abschluss dieses schönen Triptychons.

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a briskvirtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the greatvariety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean.
In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished.
After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944, but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica’s main export product for many years, nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later, however, Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their ownmusical style called Reggae.
Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.

The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm, not on, but between the beats.

Jaren na de suikerexport is op dit moment de muziek misschien wel het bekendsteexportproduct.
Eerst was de Amerikaanse muziek erg populair op het eiland. Later begonnen de Jamaicaanse muzikanten zelf te experimenteren en ontstond uiteindelijk de Reggae.
Bekende reggea artiesten zijn Bob Marleyen Peter Tosh.

De belangrijkste instrumenten bij reggae zijn de bas en de drums. Samen leggen zij de basis voor de stijl neer. de riddim. Een bassdrum-accent op de tweede en de vierde tel, in plaats van de eerste enderde, zijn kenmerkend voor een typisch reggae-drumritme. Dit wordt vaak aangevuld met syncopische patronen. De slag-gitarist speelt de akkoorden in de kenmerkende reggaeslag, niet op maar tussen de tellen.

Philip Sparke's Sinfonietta No. 4 is comprised of three parts that are played as an uninterrupted whole. The _x001F_first movement begins with a lyrical fugato passage, framing a brisker and more rhythmical middle section. The second movement is slower and contains a long and expressive euphonium solo. The third movement is a salute to the sponsor of this commission: various percussion instruments conjure up sounds reminiscent of a carpenter's workshop, accompanied by a unison orchestral passage in a scat style.

Sinfonietta No. 4 bestaat uit drie in elkaar overlopende delen. Het eerste deel bestaat uit een lyrische fugato dat overgaat in een sneller en ritmisch gedeelte. In het tweede, trage deel, komt een prachtige euphoniumsolo aan bod. Het derde deel bevat een muzikale knipoog naar de opdrachtgever van het werk waarin de componist diverse slagwerk instrumenten geluiden na laat bootsen die uit een timmermanswekplaats lijken te komen.

Sinfonietta Ndeg 4 est une oeuvre en trois mouvements qui s'enchainent sans interruption. Le premier mouvement decrit le village de Stramproy. Il s'ouvre avec un passage lyrique en style fugue qui enserre un passage central plus rapide et plus rythme. Dans le second mouvement, la musique est plus apaisee. Un magni_x001C_fique solo d'euphonium traverse la trame musicale. Le troisieme et dernier mouvement illustre les activites de l'entreprise commanditaire de l'oeuvre. On entend les bruits de l'atelier dans un passage pour multi-percussions, qui ornemente une texture orchestrale a l'unisson, proche du scat.

Nel secondo movimento la musica e piu calma. Un magni_x001E_fico assolo di eufonio attraversa la trama musicale. Il terzo movimento descrive in musica le attivita dell'azienda che ha commissionato il brano (un laboratorio di falegnameria), attraverso un passaggio per le percussioni che ornano un andamento orchestrale all'unisono.

The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody, the hymnresounds in full glory.

Rob Goorhuis schreef de ouverture 'The Battle of Varlar' in 1997, in opdracht van de gemeente De Bildt, ter gelegenheid van het 800-jarig bestaan van de Duitse partnerstad Coesfeld.
Deze compositie werd door de gemeente De Bildtin juni 1997 aan de gemeente Coesfeld als geschenk aangeboden.
Het werk werd door een ad hoc orkest, bestaande uit leden van de Bildtse Muziekschool en de Musikschule Coesfeld o.l.v. Martin de Boer, op 30 november 1997 te Coesfeldin premi?re gebracht.

Het werk brengt een belangrijke gebeurtenis uit de geschiedenis van Coesfeld in herinnering: de slag bij Varlar, die in het jaar 1454 heeft plaatsgevonden.
Deze slag werd geleverd tussen detroepen van Walraf von Mörs onder leiding von Konrad von Diepholz en de troepen van Johan von Hoya onder leiding van Hertog Friedrich von Braunschweig.
Op de heide bij Varlar vielen destijds meer dan 2000 doden. De slag werdgewonnen door Walraf von Mörs.

De compositie beschrijft in vogelvlucht de gebeurtenissen in het jaar 1454.
Allereerst wordt de inwijding van de kapel op de Klinkenberg verklankt in een koraal.
Daarna kondigen de trompettenen de trombones de ophanden zijnde veldslag aan. In het daarop volgende strijdgewoel zijn de geluiden van sabels en degens hoorbaar en ook het geweeklaag van van de gewonden. Als de Hertog van Braunschweig door de troepenvan Walraf verwond wordt en gevangen wordt genomen trekt Konrad von Diepholz met zijn mannen triomfantelijk naar Coesfeld.
Het koraal weerklinkt in volle glorie tegen een feestelijke melodie.

Dit werk is opgenomen inhet Groot repertorium, fanfare - 5e divisie.

Die Schlacht von Varlar fand im Jahre 1454 in der Gegend der Stadt Coesfeld statt. Rob Goorhuis’ musikalisches Luftbild der historischen Ereignisse beginnt mit einer Hymne zur Einweihung einer Kapelle, dann kündigen Trompeten und Posaunen die bevorstehende Schlacht an. Im folgenden Getümmel ist Säbelgerassel, aber auch das Wehklagen der Verwundeten zu hören, bevor mit der Hymne aus dem Eingangsteil der glorreiche Sieg gefeiert wird.

La bataille de Varlar a eu lieu en l’an 1454 autour de la ville de Coesfeld (Allemagne). Telle une vue aérienne, l’oeuvre composée par Rob Goorhuis brosse le portrait des événements qui s’enchaînent les uns après les autres : un hymne en honneur de la chapelle près du champ de bataille, puis l’affrontement venir, le bruit des bottes et le cliquetis des sabres, les gémissements des blessés puis nouveau l’hymne de l’introduction, repris cette fois dans un tempo plus rapide car il est destiné célébrer la victoire.

Il brano inizia con un inno che simboleggia l’inaugurazione di una cappella, mentre le trombe e i tromboni annunciano l’imminente inizio delle ostilit . Segue un passaggio caratterizzato dai suoni tipici della cruenta battaglia, ma anche dai lamenti dei feriti, che anticipano il glorioso inno della vittoria.
