This major concert work cosists o five movements.1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas, a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals, in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the “Laguna del Shimbe”, one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It’s a proud, beautiful andindependent race, which has never succumbed to domination, not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish, fruit, plants, ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation, they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning “picture”, “soul”, “essence”. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system, their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. “Everywhere the white man goes, he leaves a wilderness behind him”, wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites, the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone,80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias, in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water, painted with redpaint and covered with feathers, after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by, amongst others, the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez, who, murdered in 1988, was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.

In the nineties, the Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan recorded a sparkling version of Vicki Sue Robinson’s disco classic Turn the Beat Around. She gave the song a catchy Latin beat, and with this new impulse, it was a worldwide hit. With the sentence from the song text “Love to hear percussion” in mind, Peter Kleine Schaars incorporated a compelling percussion solo in his arrangement. The result is a dynamic piece of music full of pace and passion.

In de jaren negentig nam de Cubaans-Amerikaanse zangeres Gloria Estefan een sprankelende versie op van Vicki Sue Robinson’s discoklassieker Turn the Beat Around. Ze gaf het nummer een aanstekelijke latin-beat en met deze nieuweimpuls bleek het opnieuw goed voor een wereldwijde hit. Met in zijn achterhoofd de zin uit de songtekst ‘Love to hear percussion’ verwerkte Peter Kleine Schaars een meeslepende slagwerksolo in zijn arrangement: het resultaatis een dynamisch stukje muziek vol vaart en passie.

In den neunziger Jahren hatte die kubanisch-amerikanische Sängerin Gloria Estefan mit ihrer spritzigen Version des Disco- Klassikers Turn the Beat Around im eingängigen Latin-Beat großen Erfolg. Mit der Textzeile Love to hear percussion“ (Ich liebe Schlagzeugklänge“) im Hinterkopf baute Peter Kleine Schaars ein unwiderstehliches Schlagzeugsolo in sein Arrangement ein und schuf so ein dynamisches, temporeiches und leidenschaftliches Stück Musik, das jedes Publikum mitreißt.

Dans les années 1990, la chanteuse américano-cubaine Gloria Estefan réalise un pétillant enregistrement du standard de la musique disco Turn the Beat Around de Vicki Sue Robinson. Évoluant sur un rythme typiquement latinoaméricain, la chanson « revue et corrigée » par Gloria Estefan connaît un nouveau succès planétaire. Peter Kleine Schaars a réalisé un excellent arrangement contenant un solo fascinant pour la percussion. La musique est dynamique, rythmée et passionnante.

Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the ‘blues’ melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!

Exultation (Jubel) ist ein kurzes, rhythmisch und stilistisch abwechslungsreiches Eröffnungsstück, das in seiner Form einem Palindrom ähnelt: Nach einer Fanfare in einem fast lateinamerikanischen Stil erscheint ein bluesiges“ Hauptthema, das nach einer kurzen Ãœberleitung zu einem zweiten Staccato-Thema führt. Es folgt ein lyrisches Thema, sodann geht es rückwärts wieder zum Stacccato-Thema und dann über die Bluesmelodie“ zurück zur Eröffnungsfanfare und damit zum Anfang und Ende zugleich!

Exultation est une oeuvre courte, rythmée et stylistiquement variée. Sa structure est b tie comme un palindrome, autrement dit, comme une forme particulière d’inversion. L’oeuvre débute avec une fanfare aux accents latino-américains laquelle succèdent un thème « bluesy », une courte transition, un second thème staccato et une mélodie lyrique. Puis le fil s’enroule pour revenir au début. Musique ou symétrie ? Telle est la question.

Exultation è un breve brano di apertura che offre diversit ritmiche e stilistiche e che nella sua forma ricorda un palindromo. Dopo una fanfara in stile latino-americano, appare il tema principale eseguito dagli eufoni, dai corni e dai sax, caratterizzato da accenti di blues che accompagna ad un seconda tema in staccato. Segue un tema lirico, prima di tornare nuovamente al tema in staccato e, attraverso una “melodia blues”, nuovamente alla fanfara di apertura e alla fine del brano.

Met Schindler's List, een film over het leven van Oskar Schindler, een Duits industrieel die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog met de inzet van al zijn financiele middelen meer dan 1100 Joden redde van de dood in Auschwitz, schreefregisseur Steven Spielberg filmgeschiedenis. De muziek bij deze - in Amerika met maar liefst zeven Oscars bekroonde - film werd geschreven door John Williams, de componist met wie Spielberg in het verleden al meer succesvolle productiesmaakte (onder andere Indiana Jones, Jawa, E.T. en Jurassic Park). Jan de Haan maakte een inspirerende bewerking van het pakkende thema uit Schindler's List.

Die verbluffend leidenschaftlichen Melodien aus John Williams Musik zum Film Schindlers Liste flossen in dieses Arrangement ein, das Musiker und Publikum gefangen nehmen wird. Die herrlich einfachen Melodien spiegeln sowohl die Traurigkeit als auch die Hoffnung, um die es in Spielbergs Film geht, wider. Bewegend und mitreissend!

C'est pour lui qu'il a compose le plus de bandes originales, parmi lesquelles E.T., Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Il faut sauver lesoldat Ryan, et la sublime bande originale du film La Liste de Schindler pour laquelle il recoit un Oscar en 1994.
