In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. In 1990 a short score of Strauss's late masterpiece Metamorphosen was discovered in Switzerland and acquired by the Bavarian State Library in Munich. It is headed 'Metamorphosen. Andante (für 2 Violinen, 2 Bratschen, 2 Celli[,] Contrabass) Richard Strauss'. This gives rise to the assumption that the composer had clearly conceived the piece as scored for seven strings and then changed his mindon receiving a commission from Paul Sacher to write a work for a larger string group. The short score bears the date 31 March 1945 at the end, the full score for twenty-three strings having already been started on 13 March. Rudolf Leopold, concert cellist and professor of cello at the University of Music, Graz, prepared the septet performing version of Metamorphosen, of which the study score was published in 1996. He explains that, for the most part, the 23-part version consists of doublings. “In the realisation of the 'original version' for string sextet and double bass I have made use of both the short score and the final score so that the complete tonal image appears in a chamber music format whilst retaining certain interesting details from the short score (for example the original closing modulation).â€.

This work was written for the Donaueschingen Musiktage of 1926 and given its first performance there together with Paul Hindemith's 'Konzertmusik' and Ernst Toch's 'Spiel' for wind band. Until a few years ago the score was thought to be lost. This first edition reproduces the original Version but it has been carefully extended so that it can be played by the usual combination of Instruments now found in a wind band. The work is suitable for advanced wind bands and those at the highest level, and is one of the first original compositions for this form of ensemble.Hans Gal was born in Vienna where he studied composition and musicology and then taught at the university. From 1929 until 1933 he was Director of the Musikhochschule in Mainz. He then had to return to Vienna and he emigrated to Edinburgh where he was a university lecturer and conductor. Together with Eusebius Mandyczewski he published the collected works of Brahms1 Piccolo-Flote, 2 Floten, 1 Oboe ad lib., 1 Fagott ad lib., 1 Klarinette in Es, 3 Klarinetten in B, 1 Bass-Klarinette in B ad lib., 2 Alt-Saxophone in Es ad lib., 1 Tenor-Saxophon in B ad lib., 1 Bariton-Saxophon in es ad lib., 3 Horner in F, 2 Trompeten in B, 3 Posaunen, 2 Flugelhorner in B, 2 Tenorhorner in B, 1 Bariton, 2 Tuben, Pauken, Schlagzeug: kleine Trommel, grosse Trommel, Tamburin, Triangel, Becken).

POEM for Flute and PianoKozuch’s POEM is a plaintive elegy, perfect for memorial concerts, in religious services, or as a lyric interlude in recital. Although composed with piano accompaniment, the music is also very effective in performance with organ. Thaddeus Kozuch (1913-1991) was a Chicago-based pianist, composer, and professor at DePaul University and Northwestern University. His beautiful POEM was composed originally for violin and piano in 1937 for his wife-to-be, Jacqueline Frye. He revised POEM for flute and piano in 1988 but the work was discovered only recently in a piano bench by the composer’s daughter, flutist Ann Fairbanks.Although the final pencil manuscript is musically complete, it lacks dynamics, and this publication presents the music as the composer left it.The following performance suggestions are provided by Ann Fairbanks:Many nuances of the work may be left to the discretion of the performer. There are quite a few notes that may be slurred, such as sets of eighth notes or triplet-eighths; if notes are articulated as written, the tonguing should be legato.Dynamics for both flute and piano could be as follows: begin the work p, then crescendo to f in bars 6-7. Decrescendo in 10-11 to a p in bar 12. The most intense section (bars 16-32) should be played with energy and full sonority, including a crescendo in 26 to fin 27. The conclusion, beginning at bar 42, should be played p, with the last measures performed quietly.
