For String Quartet. Uy u t'an was written in 1997-98 commissioned by the Festival Octobre en Normandie and funds from fellowship of Sistema Nacional de Creadores (Mexico). It was premiered in October 98 at the Eglise de la Madeleine in Rouen by my most loyal colleagues in the Arditti Quartet to whom the piece is dedicated.

This new work for young band draws inspiration from a park in the Great Lakes Region where an annual display of dancing lights brightens the winter skies. Active percussion, staccato rhythms, and careful scoring ensure that this work is a fun, yet achievable piece that would be appropriate for winter celebrations or any concert throughout the year.

Appropriate for middle school and smaller high school groups. Second clarinets usually stay below the break. Parts are written with more independence, and instrumentation increases slightly. There is still adequate doubling in the lower voices. Grades 2 - 2.5
