WINNING PERFORMANCE EBBC LILLE 2016 Raveling, Unraveling - In Search of 'La Valse' was written for the Cory Band as their own-choicetest piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke's The Unknown Journey (2014) for concert band, and the use of Ravel's La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparkes aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composers view is that little in music does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. As the music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.

The concerts and exhibits of the Cleveland Museum of Art were an important formative influence for me during my student days. So when the invitation came to create a new work celebrating this institution on its seventy-fifth anniversary, I was not only happy to accept, but knew immediately that I wanted to write a piece that would somehow relate specifically to the museum. I decided to make the work a reflection on a painting in the museum's collection: Zurbaran's The Holy House of Nazareth. My quartet is not program music in a narrative sense, but rather a kind of meditation that takes its tone from this painting's remarkable integration of intense affect, mysterious repose and secret geometry. Besides Zurbaran's painting, the piece is occupied with a purely musical object of contemplation: the hymn tune Picardy, best known with the text Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. This tune permeates the harmonic and melodic life of the quartet, sometimes appearing in a very simple, straightforward fashion, but often hidden amidst more complex structures. I was attracted to the melody for its musical qualities, but later realized that the hymn's text also resonates with the mood of the painting; the words speak of a reverent awe, of cherubim with sleepless eye, and of the mystery of the Incarnate Word who must suffer: King of kings, yet born of Mary...

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is the most common English title of the 10th and last movement of the cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben', BWV 147 (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1716 and 1723. Today, it is often performed at wedding ceremonies as well as during Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter, slowly and reverently. This is, however, in contrast to the effect suggested by Bach in his original scoring for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuo. The music's wide popularity has led to numerous arrangements and transcriptions such as the present one for clarinet octet or choir by Prof. Hideaki Iwai.

Prayer For Asia is an original work for wind orchestra whose main theme was inspired by prayer. Simple and pure in its core, exponentially powerful harmonic and textural scoring make this work both music for the musician and soul food for a new generation of audiences here and abroad. The imagery of this musical entreaty tranquilly unfolds with a clarinet exposition that authentically captures the essence of an invocation that is adeptly passed to English Horn and masterfully developed via sectional highlighting, superlative percussion and a climax of elysian dimension. Prayer For Asia conveys reverence and paramount reflection that will, perhaps now more than ever, touch mature ensembles and audiences in a significant manner.

Written to commemorate the Passion of Christ, this cantata is a moving tribute to His life and ministry. Composed for maximum flexibility and scored for SA(T)B voices, the optional cued notes make it possible for the cantata to grow with your choir. Smaller choirs will enjoy the rich textures and larger ensembles will be able to engage their full resources. For churches that desire an instrumental component, a very modest consort instrumentation creates a reverent accompaniment. The narration contains scriptures and prayers to convey the graceful theme of Christ's sacrificial love. Ending with the crucifixion, A Gathering of Grace will set the stage for Easter morning. Songs include: Prelude of Shadows; In the Stillness of This Moment; Ask of Me; Palm Branches; A Light in the Upper Room; Jesus, in Gethsemane; The Day the Cross Held Up the Sky; A Green Hill Far Away; Recessional. Well-chosen music is an essential adjunct to the dignity and reverence of funerals and acts of remembrance, comforting those who mourn, and shining light upon the personality of the departed person. Among these fifteen new arrangements, organists will find a wealth of material from which to select the right piece appropriate to the occasion. There are classics such as Mendelssohn's O rest in the Lord and Handel's Dead March from Saul, romantic masterpieces like Elgar's Nimrod and Mahler's Adagietto, as well as a contemporary favourite, Candle in the Wind, which featured so memorably at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. A leading arranger and teacher for the organ, John Norris has also included his own Improvisation on Brother James' Air, an arrangement of Sibelius's Finlandia ('Be still, my soul'), and a novelty item The Broken Melody by Auguste van Biene. The collection concludes, appropriately, with Stanford's uplifting Nunc Dimittis from the Evening Service in C.

Kurt Thomas' Mass in a op. 1 for Soloists and two mixed choirs a cappella was composed in 1925 at the end of his music studies in Leipzig. It is dedicated to his patron, Thomaskantor (choirmaster of St. Thomas) Karl Straube, in highest gratitude and reverence. It was published in the same year as his first printed work by Breitkopf & Hartel, founding a long-term collaboration which later enabled the publication of the Small Sacred Choral Music op. 25 (ChB 5344) and the conducting tutorial Lehrbuch der Chorleitung (BV 271). In 1927, it was awarded with the Beethoven-Preis of the Prussian Academy of Arts. The work is set for double choir throughout, partly also giving way to eight-part passages and shorter sections in which the choir sings in turn with the four solo voices. The Venetian polychorality is also used as a stylistic device, emphasizing the model character of baroque choral music.

A delightful arrangement of a classic Advent text from the 9th-century, this gently flowing piece begins with a statement of the melody coupled by a simple arpeggiated accompaniment. The undulating rhythm is broken mid-piece by a more chordal harmonic movement that reflects the reverence and magnitude of the text, “At your great name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend, all hearts must bow.†It ends as it began with a strong restatement of the opening accompaniment.

This beautiful setting of one of the most popular hymns ever written, Christ The Lord is Risen Today, was respectfully commissioned by the Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Mu in memory of James Morgan. Its musical impact is undeniably both breathtaking and stunning beyond all descriptive words. The emotional conclusion of this work allows for the audience to sing the hymn while an antiphonal brass section soars high above with emotional reverence. Both of these creative ideas are purely optional, but they should be definitely thought of as highly effective when applied. Inspiring!

Part of the longer hymn Pange lingua by Venantius Fortunatus (c.540-c.600), the Crux fidelis features in the Adoration of the Cross during the solemn liturgical actions of Good Friday, and at Lauds during Passiontide. The reverence and awe of the words resonate in the poised strophes and silences of Ronald Corp's new setting for SATB, a memorable addition to the repertoire of music for times of penitence, and to the surprisingly small corpus of interpretations, including those by Lennox Berkeley, Adrian Willaert, John Dunstable, and King John IV of Portugal (attributed), of this text in particular.

The Huron Carol is Canada's oldest Christmas carol, written in 1643 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary. The melody is from a tradition French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid). Intended as a gift and teaching aid to the Huron people, Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in their native language. The Moon of Winter is a powerful and moving adaptation of this carol for band that will enhance your next Christmas concert, adding a sense of reverence and honor.
