Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls School in Brook Green, London. St Paul’s Suite, written for the school’s string orchestra, was premiered there in 1913 and consists of four movements: an energetic Jig in 6/8 and 9/8, Ostinato, based on a simple 4-note theme, Intermezzo, an energetic and rhythmic dance and Finale, adapted from the Second Suite in F in which Holst brilliantly combines The Dargason and The English Dancing Master, with the traditional melody, Greensleeves.

The Last Rose of Summer is a popular Irish folksong. The original text was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and the melody is a traditional air titled The Groves of Blarney. The German composer Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) cleverly used this song in his opera Martha, a light-hearted, successful work that is still regularly performed. The melancholy character of The Last Rose of Summer still appeals to many people in the present day and this arrangement by Wil van der Beek certainly does justice to the beauty of the melody. A wonderful item to change the mood of any performance.

This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for concert band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

Deze oude melodie uit Wales werd in 1794 voor het eerst uitgegeven in Relics of the Welsh Bards. Maria durch ein? Dornwald ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thüringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Michael Bilkes used the well-known melody to create this attractive arrangement for concert band.

The First Nowell is a traditional Christmas song that can be traced back to the 18th century. The word â??nowellâ? is in fact derived the French word for Christmas, â??noelâ?. The First Nowell is sung in Englishspeaking countries around the world, although the actual text may vary by region and local customs. The simple and beautiful melody has made this carol a Christmas favourite. Lorenzo Bocci turns the melody into an elegant flexible four-part arrangement.

The First Nowell is een traditioneel kerstlied dat vermoedelijk uit het Cornwall (Engeland) van de achttiende eeuw stamt. Het woord â??Nowellâ?? in de titel verwijst naar het Franse woord voor kerst: noël. In heel het Engelstalige gebiedwordt dit lied gezongen, weliswaar met verschillenden teksten. Dankzij de eenvoudige maar ontroerende melodie is het lied over de gehele wereld bekend. Lorenzo Bocci maakte er een arrangement voor vijfstemmige variabele bezettingvan. Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. In Dublin Dances Jan Van der Roost has combined three well-known traditional Irish melodies to form an attractive medley. The medley contains Brian Boru’s March, a melody made popular by worldfamous flautist James Galway, followed bythe atmospheric tune The Minstrel Man and, as a cheerful finale, The Irish Washerwoman. Add a little magic from the Emerald Isle to your concert with this rousing medley.

In deze ‘Ierse rapsodie’ put de componist uit de rijke schat aan Ierse volksmuziek en rijgt hij drie bekende melodieën aaneen tot een fraai geheel. De eerste melodie, Brian Boru’s March, krijgt een verfrissende opknapbeurt,trommels en fluiten spelen daarbij een belangrijke rol. Dan volgt de melodie van The Minstrel Man, sfeervol gebracht door diverse instrumenten en met een sobere maar treffende harmonisatie omkaderd. Als ‘uitsmijter’ is erhet opgewekte The Irish Washerwoman - deze vrolijke finale besluit dit muzikale bezoek aan het oneindig groene eiland.

In Dublin Dances verknüpfte Jan Van der Roost drei bekannte Melodien zu einem ansprechenden Ganzen: Brian Borus’s March, bekannt vor allem durch den Flötisten James Galway, ist geprägt von Flöten und Trommeln; dann folgt The Minstrel Man, ein stimmungsvolles Lied, das in mehreren Instrumentierungen erscheint und schließlich - als Clou - The Irish Washerwoman im typisch irischen 6/8-Takt als fröhliches Finale dieses musikalischen Besuchs auf der ewig grünen Insel.

The lyrics to Der Mond ist aufgegangen (The Moon Is Risen) come from Matthias Claudius, one of Germany’s best-known poets. The 1779 poem with the original title Abendlied (Evening song) was set to music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz and has become perhaps the most famous Abendlied in the German-speaking world. Johann de Haan has created a delightful arrangement of this poignant melody. The wind orchestra can optionally be accompanied by a choir (Dutch and German texts are provided).

De tekst van het lied Der Mond ist aufgegangen is van de hand van Matthias Claudius, een bekende Duitse dichter. Het gedicht komt uit 1779 en had oorspronkelijk de titel Abendlied. Johann Abraham Peter Schulz zette hetop muziek. Daarmee werd het een van de bekendste avondliederen in het Duitstalige gebied. Jacob de Haan maakte een fraaie bewerking van deze rustige melodie.
