In her Impromptu, Helena Winkelman conjures an atmosphere of timelessness, employing musical elements variously meditative and percussive, punctuated by shadowy accents in the contrabass register and delicate flourishes in the soprano. This masterful composition, engrossing and adventurous, is a rewarding challenge for the performer. Performing notes Attentive pedaling is key to producing the spectral resonances in this Impromptu. The impressionistic atmosphere of the piece requires a carefully gauged use of all three pedals, even where not expressly noted in the score. Especially with the right pedal many small ad lib. changes are necessary to create this impressionistic atmosphere. The central pedal only holds the bass notes. Care must be taken that the pedals are not changed at the same time to avoid the third pedal affecting notes that should not be. The composer wrote Impromptu with Schubert’s Hungarian Melody (D817) playing in her mind’s ear, and suggests that her Impromptu be programmed to follow it attacca in performance.

Herz an Herz, as the title implies (heart to heart), is a love duet. Two distinct voices, characterised through their respective male and female vocal registers, negotiate a warm, heartfelt melody through a loosely strophic form. Initially the voices sing in turn, each section - or verse - led predominantly by one. Each time their lines entwine, virtuosic flourishes ascend the keyboard, interrupting to render them silent again. It is only after one particularly tumultuous episode that the true duet appears: Out of the murky resonances of the lowest “A†emerges the throbbing chords and impassioned vocal lines from Wagner’s famous duet, O sink hernieder, Nacht der Liebefrom the second act of Tristan und Isolde. The 'singers', now reconciled, come together for one final verse before a fleeting memory of the beginning gently ushers in the end of the piece. Herz an Herz was awarded 1st prize in William Howard's Love Song Composing Competition and was premiered on 26th April 2017 at Hoxton Hall, London, by William Howard.

Scored for augmented jazz ensemble, this setting of the famous theme (a.k.a. Danny Boy) features legato woodwind flourishes and sustained brass chords. In his score notes, Sammy Nestico says that all real 'blowing' should be saved for the ensemble chorus midway through, where a full, fat sound will produce vivid contrast with the quiet opening and closing.

The partita is in five movements, each based on a text verse which is quoted before the movement. The first movement, smooth and flowing, depicts starlight, everlasting light, and a call to Christ. The second movement pastorale takes its cue from the text ...not as a monarch, but the child of Mary... and quotes GREENSLEEVES. The third movement is a firm declamation, At your great name...all knees must bend. The fourth movement is strong and dramatic with chromatic flourishes painting the text, ...holy might...defend us...from all assaults. The final movement is a fiery toccata over a pedal melody.
