This arrangement of the popular Polovtsian Dances by Russian composer Borodin contains seven dances from the original manuscript, some of which have been used in the musical Kismet, as well as being performed by such famous names as Tony Bennett and Bing Crosby. Includes a solo for snare drum!

A Chorale arranged for 15 Instruments. Full Score for ensemble.Bach's Befichl du deine Wege is a chorale setting (BWV 272), which Hans Abrahamsen has arranged for fifteen instruments. In Hans Albrahamsen's adaptation Bachs chorale gradually ernerges from two melodic fragments, both borrowed from the Danish composer Poul Ruders' Four Dances in One Movernent'. In fact both fragments are taken from the last three bars of Ruders' composition. One of Ruders' small melodies is descending, the other is ascending. The metamorphosis from Ruders to Bach can be accomplished because both of Ruders' melodic fragments are in fact 'hidden' among the parts of this Bach choraleinasmuch as the composer has transposed it into B minor. In the first verse we hear only the descending Ruders melody. In the secend verse Ruders' second, ascending and chrornatically coloured melody is added. In the subsequent verses more and more melodies are added. Thus the piece begins with Poul Ruders' melodic fragment in the foreground. In the course of the next verse Ruders' material gradually recedes into the background, and permits Bachs face to ernerge with increasing clarty in the foreground. The piece is dedicated to Poul Ruders. - Thomas MichelsenArrangement

Commissioned by Bromsgrove Concerts with financial assistance from Arts Council England 1st perf: Smith Quartet, Artrix, Bromsgrove, 27 February 2009 Favoured by English composers from Purcell to Vaughan Williams and Britten, the ground-bass form receives a contemporary makeover in Morgan Hayes's Dances on a Ground. Artfully four-square, a cello ostinato stays stubbornly true to its original thoughts. Meanwhile, above it a capricious ensemble of two violins and viola swaggers its way through flights of melody and jumpy pizzicati to an ecstatic conclusion. Commissioned by Bromsgrove Concerts with funding provided by Arts Council England, Dances on a Ground was first performed by the innovative Smith Quartet at the Artrix, Bromsgrove, on 27 February 2009.

In his Slavonic Dances Op. 46, Dvorak did not draw on pre-existent music, but created something original and new, projecting his own compositional will into the creative process. What we hear are Dvoraks melodies, and that it is due to his creative will that he cast them as in Dance 3, for example in the form of a melodic four-tone model which is common to many folk songs and childrens songs. Finally, it is his rhythmic invention and shaping of the musical character of each dance that breathe life into the elements of Slavonic dance music.

The Sonatas de Paris are divided into two books. Comellas began the series in early 1952 and they were finished in 1955. As with most of his works, he composed without having a plan to premier them or a commission. So upon having them completed, he filed them away. On many occasions, his close friend Jordi Giro would read thrue the pieces or Anna Ricci would sing his songs, but very little of his music was performed during his life time. The two books entitled Sonatas de Paris are really to books with totally different character. The first book is made up of short piano pieces in a neo baroque style. More than following strict forms of the baroque suite, the pieces are more a evoking of the baroque style. Book one loosely follows the idea of a suite or ordre, where as book two is much freer in structure being made up of various pieces, a few in memory of his favored composers (Albeniz, Debussy, and Granados) ending with a group of four dances, Las indias danzantes [Dances of the Indian girls], that refer to an Indian dance. This group of dances is not really playable by one pianist and seems to be really meant to be performed piano 4 hands, but since there is no note about this in the score it is hard to say. A few of these pieces were performed by Rosa Sabater in Paris in 1980.The present edition is based on manuscripts that are in the Joan Comellas deposit in the National Catalonian Library in Barcelona.

The flute concerto 'Dances with the Winds' was composed in 1974 for the Swedish flautist Gunilla von Bohr, a specialist in all members of the flute family. The ordinary flute thus alternates with a bass flute at the beginning and end of the four-movement concerto, the second movement is assigned to the shrill piccolo and the third to the sensuous alto flute. The last movement is a summary of all the musical events in the concerto. At the end the bass flute soars to the top of its register, the note D acting as the pivot to many of the symmetries in the work, against a resigned B flat minor chord on the orchestra. (Einojuhani Rautavaara) CD: Patrick Gallois (flute), Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Leif Segerstam ODE 921-2World premiere: Stockholm, May 4, 1974 Additional to the original scoring for flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute, the flute part in the piano reduction contains ossias for alto flute instead of the bass flute.

Drummer Dances is based primarily on rhythms from two famous drum solos. The first 30 bars take the rhythms from Max Roach's solo in 'Delilah Dances', as recorded on the Clifford Brown and Max Roach album. The music develops further using the four bar drum breaks from the same composition. Elvin Jones' drum solo 'Monks Dream' is the other rhythmical source material in this piece. I use 32 bars of this solo in a more linear development. Two distinct melodies are heard throughout this piece, they appear in different variations within the various rhythms the two drum solos provide.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesserknown compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. In his last years, Mozart composed a large number of German Dances for orchestra. This music for daily use of the time - intended functionally, for dancing and entertainment - is distinguished by enchanting ideas and simple textures. The editor has tried to cany over the instrumental subtleties into the piano-duet writing. These dances are particularly suitable for introducing some relaxation into the learning of the piano, for the interpretative and technical workingout demanded by Mozart's original piano-duet works is not required to the same degree here. The marks of expression have been taken over from the original score and in part supplemented. Notes not marked otherwise are to be played non legato. The technical difficulty of these pieces corresponds roughly to the third and fourth year of study. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1977.

These four easy folkloristic pieces are suitable for tuition and group practice. The Spanish composer M. Murciano (born 1962) used elements of traditional Spanish forms: the dances from the area around Seville are strongly infuenced by the Flamenco.
