This edition is the result of Harald Vogel's many years of practice as an organist and musicologist. The music text is based on a reevaluation of 17th- and 18th-century manuscripts containing the free organ and keyboard works by Buxtehude. They originated during a transitional phase between the traditional letter tablature and the staff notation still in use today. Since many works have survived only in transcriptions for staff notation, the editor was confronted with a high error rate, which he carefully analyzes in the Einzelanmerkungen. During the preparation of the edition, the editor always kept sight of the performance practice, but still, the image of the sources is never distorted (e. g. by superfluous rests, beaming not conforming to the sources and the unhistorical adjustment of time signatures) and stays very close to the compositional notation, the letter tablature. The flexible use of three staves and the differentiated distribution of the voices on the staves allow for an approximation in reading conventions of historical notation with its resulting information about hand division. Grouping the free organ repertoire into works with obbligato pedal and works for manuals, this edition is organized in two volumes. The first subvolume (I/1, EB 9304) contains the Preface and the Preludes, whereas the second subvolume (I/2, EB 9305) contains Toccatas, Ostinato works, alternative versions and a comprehensive Critical Commentary (in German only). Volume II (EB 9306) contains Buxtehude's free organ and keyboard works (manualiter) with the corresponding texts (Preface and Critical Commentary).Until 1971, Harald Vogel worked on a dissertation (with Georg von Dadelsen, Hamburg) on Die Fuge um Bach. Besides the description of the inclusion of triple measures into the C notation and the irregularities of the voice mutation in the polyphonic structures, this also included a discussion about the justification of the inner textual criticism. With the inner textual criticism, deviations in parallel passages are unified. The North German fugue style, reaching a peak in Buxtehude's work, is characterized by a constant diversity of details in subject and polyphonic progressions. One of the indicators of the fantastic style is the dissolution of the polyphonic structures at the ends of the fugues, evident in Buxtehude's work.In this edition, a musical text is presented that avoids the uniformity of detail not conforming to the sources. However, there are many examples of transcription and cursory errors, which are analyzed in a methodical systematic manner. In his libretto for “ Riccardo primoâ€, Paolo Rolli drew on Antonio Lotti’s opera “ Isacio tiranno †which had been performed in Venice in 1710. Handel needed a text with two great women’s roles, for the two best female singers of the day were members of his troupe – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni . He had already written the operas “Alessandro†and “ Admeto †for them. He began composing “ Riccardo †in spring 1727, completing the first version on 16 May. However, following the death of King George I on 11 June 1727, the theatres remained closed. For Handel, who had become a British citizen in February 1727, the accession of George II to the throne offered new possibilities, and he embarked on a revision of the opera. With this, he was able to offer a new opera for the coronation festivities, the hero of which was one of King George’s charismatic forebears. From May onwards, Handel thoroughly revised the present score, wrote some parts anew and expanded it with particularly splendid music. Handel and Rolli also improved the plot and introduced patriotic elements to honour the British monarchy. The historic background is the third crusade against Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria , who had recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Although King Richard I captured Cyprus and together with French crusaders stormed the fortress of Akko in the Holy Land, the crusade ended with a ceasefire and Jerusalem remained in Saladin’s hands. Richard was given the title ‘Coeur-de-lion‹’ by the English for his great military ability and bravery, although the Sicilians had first given him this name because of his relentless cruelty in clashes around Messina . The vocal score is based on the Halle Handel Edition volume published in 2005, edited by Terence Best, and contains the second version of the opera which was premiered in November 1727.

From the Forward During the initial or formative years of a player's career, he acquires the mechanical habits which determine the extent of his development invariably by pure chance. If he happens to be numbered among the few fortunate ones who unconsciously utilize their physical factors to advantage, eventually someone will mistakenly refer to him as being a 'natural' or 'born with it.' If, as is more likely the case, he happens to be one whose physical factors clash or function incorrectly, he inadvertently seals his own fate. Either he can give up shortly after high school as most do, or he can continue down the blind alley of his own circumscribed potential. The ticking carries us back in time with a piece that stylistically imitates the music of the 18th century in melody, harmony and rhythm. 2. COMPOSERS DINNER IN HEAVEN: At the music publisher De Haske, a composers' dinner was an integral part of trade fairs or meetings. The dinner was very popular among anyone who sat at it, not least of all because it offered one the opportunity to chat informally. Based on such a meeting, Otto M. Schwarz has composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR WOOD QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continuous eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts, and following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.

Homilius is known for having always searched for new forms in order to avoid any schematic pattern. Thus, one looks in vain in the present cantata for arias. The opening choir is introduced by two choral groups: One calls to take up the fight against the devil, while the other fearfully hesitates and finally, in the chorale Jesus Christus, wohn uns bei agrees to join in. Following each of the three stanzas of the embellished chorale, in a recitative the hesitant one is given courage before he also takes up arms, in a confident final chorus. Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri.
