French composer, Pierre Boulez (b. 1925) is best known for his serialist, experimental and electronic compositions. However, his work for Soprano, Mixed Choir and Piano Reduction, Le Soleil DesEaux also remains regularly performed. Having studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen, Boulez soon began his own creative experiments. Amongst his earlier works was hiscantata, Le Soleil Des Eaux, composed in the late 1940s. The work has since been revised many times. Based on poems by René Char, Le Soleil Des Eaux is atonal, exploitingmanytechniques. For advanced choirs and Soprano soloists, Boulez's Le Soleil Des Eaux provides a challenging yet riveting performance work.

The main part of Supplement Volume 12 features the predecessor of the Grandes Études de Paganini, a series of six études written after Paganini between 1838 and 1840, and referred to by Liszt as transcendent performance (Études d'exécution transcendante d'apres Paganini). The series was inspired not only by the virtuoso violinist and composer's Caprices and Violin Concerto in B minor but also by Schumann's Paganini Études, which Liszt presumably encountered thanks to Clara Wieck at the beginning of 1838. The volume also includes the first and second solo piano versions of Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (1840 and 1841), which Liszt composed a number of times in several versions,as well as two Wagner transcriptions and the first versions of adaptations of two works by Russian composers. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously with the Complete Edition volume in cloth-bound, its paperback for practical purposes is also published, the contents of which, except for the critical notes, is identical with the Complete Edition volume. Ferenc Farkas wrote about the origin of the Passacaglia: In 1931, while I was still a student by Ottorino Respighi in Rome, I began to compose a Partita in 4 movements for orchestra, whose third movement should be a Passacaglia. From this work, I only finished the Passacaglia and the Scherzo. In 1968, I took over the Passacaglia and transcribed it for organ without any modification, except the last 6 bars, I partially changed. In the shape of an arch, the work is based on a theme that is repeated thirteen times. Piano initially it evolves in crescendo to a climax in the 33rd bar, then falls gradually to a gently end. We do not know when and for whom Ferenc Farkas wrote this version for 6 clarinets of the Passacaglia.

Third version, first performed around 1747 in Leipzig. First version available under 35.304/00. The St. Mark Passion, which probably originated in the first decade of the 18th century, by a composer known until now only as Kaiser, is only preserved in various copies. It occupies a prominent place in Bach's music library as the only music for Passion by another composer which he performed several times, usually in different forms. For the young Bach in Weimar this St. Mark Passion was a didactic piece for learning the art of the modern narrative recitative; as the Leipzig Thomaskantor he also performed it (1726). The present edition reconstructs the third version, first performed in Leipzig (1747), in which Bach inserted seven arias from Handel's famous Brockes-Passion. Only in this pasticcio did a direct encounter occur between him and his famous compatriot in London, a real encounter which Bach longed for, but which never came about. As a woman composer she found less recognition in the Netherlands, except from colleagues and friends. Cellist Marix Loevensohn frequently performed her Poème for cello and orchestra, while Louis Zimmermann, concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, premiered the Concert Piece for Violin and Orchestra in 1935, conducted by Willem Mengelberg. Her international breakthrough began in 1938, when violinist Willem Noske played this work, full of 'Oriental moods,' in Prague and Paris. In October 1941 it was also performed several times in the United States with Ruth Posselt as violinist. However, the prospect of further international engagements became blocked by the war.

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.Jacob de Haan haalde zijn inspiratie voor dit driedelige werk bij het Hessische kuuroord Bad Orb en het tweejaarlijkse Blaasmuziekfestival van de Europese Jeugd, waarvan hij meerdere keren beschermheer was. In het werk verwerkte de componist verschillende e_x001D_ecten die betrekking hebben op het festival. Zo hoort men in de vallei verschillende orkesten door elkaar spelen, een indrukwekkend e_x001D_ect dat ook in de compositie werd verwerkt. Ook kan men ervoor kiezen om tijdens het werk het orkest op te splitsen en het podium te laten verlaten en marcherend weer richting podium te stappen.
